In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, people all around the globe are taking several precautions to keep themselves safe.
The most susceptible people who are prone to catch the virus are the elderly. Not only their immune system weakens with age, but they also develop secondary conditions such as blood pressure and diabetes, which makes COVID-19 worse.
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has released a list of do’s and don’ts for the elderly to help them keep themselves safe during the pandemic.
Do’s for the elderly
- The elderly should ensure proper nutrition and watch their diet carefully. You must hydrate yourself and drink lots of fluids to increase your immunity.
- You must exercise and meditate to keep yourself active.
- You must take prescribed medicines regularly and postpone any scheduled surgery.
- Senior citizens must keep connected with their family members and friends. If you are living alone, you must phone call or video call them regularly.
- You must clean frequently touched surfaces and disinfect them properly.
- Elderly people must stay at home as much as they can and avoid meeting visitors.
- Washing hands and face regularly, with soap and water is a must.
- Using a handkerchief or your elbow for sneezing and coughing is recommended.
- In case any elderly person develops fever or another respiratory symptom, they must contact their nearest health care facility.
Don’ts for the elderly
- As an elderly, you must avoid going to hospitals for your routine check-ups.
- Senior citizens must avoid crowded places like markets and religious places.
- Avoid having close contact with sick or affected people.
- In case you feel sick, contact a doctor and never self-medicate.
- Don’t shake hands or hug your near ones to avoid infections.
- Never cough or sneeze into your bare hands.
- If you are down with fever, cold or cough, avoid going close to your friends and family.
- Refrain from touching your eyes, nose, face and tongue.
