The Kumasi Bloc of Parliament has strongly condemned what it describes as disgraceful and undemocratic, actions that occurred at the premises of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council during the counting of votes for the election of the Regional Council of State representative.
In a press statement issued by the Bloc on Tuesday, February 11, it stated that reports confirmed some thugs violently snatched the ballot box to disrupt the process.
The Bloc said that at the time of what it described as the shameful act, one of the contestants had secured 49 out of 84 votes, with counting still underway.
“Upon realising that one contestant had won, the thugs forcefully halted the process, plunging the election into chaos,” the Bloc said.
It further stated that this “brazen attack” on the country’s democratic process is not just an assault on the integrity of the elections but a direct challenge to the peace and stability of the region.
“Such lawless behaviour has no place in our democracy and must be met with the full force of the law,” the statement added.
In light of this, the Kumasi Bloc of Parliament has demanded swift action from law enforcement to arrest and prosecute all individuals involved in the criminal act.
They also called for the immediate resumption and completion of the electoral process to ensure that the will of the people is respected.
Additionally, they demanded a firm stance from the government and all relevant authorities to prevent such incidents from recurring in future elections.
“We call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to stand against such reckless attempts to subvert democracy. Our electoral processes must be free, fair, and peaceful, and we will not tolerate any efforts to undermine the rule of law,” the statement added.
