Tributes and donations are pouring in for a United Kingdom (UK)-based pregnant Ghanaian nurse who died of the deadly novel coronavirus disease.
The nurse, identified as Mary Agyeiwaa Agyapong, 28, reportedly died on Sunday but was successfully delivered of her daughter through a caesarean section.
About four days after her demise, over $173,706.15 (£139,467) has been raised for the family and the new born baby amid tributes and other solidarity messages.
This was through a GoFundMe donation account her friends created on Wednesday morning to help raise the fund.
“Mary was a blessing to everyone she came across and her love, care and sincerity will be irreplaceable,” Rhoda Asiedu the organiser of the fund wrote.
Mary until her death had been working as a nurse at Luton and Dunstable Hospital in the south of England for the past five years.
According to the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Mary tested positive on April 5 and was admitted to the hospital on April 7 but died five days later.
Meanwhile, the baby is said to be “doing well,” although it is not known if it has been infected with the coronavirus as her father was also tested for COVID-19 and is currently self-isolating
