Confirmed: Late K'dua Sec Tech student died of meningitis

-

A form two student at the Koforidua Secondary Technical School (SECTEC), has died of meningitis.
Eastern Regional correspondent, Kofi Siaw, confirmed on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Monday that the student, Yaw Dennis died Friday morning at the Regional Government Hospital.
Sources in the school, according to Kofi Siaw indicated that, the deceased continued to complain to his friends of severe fever and body weakness about a week ago after he took part in the School’s 50th-anniversary float last week but his condition worsened and later complained of a stiff neck.
He was sent to the hospital by some of his classmates on Thursday at the knowledge of school authorities.
He died shortly after.
His classmates quickly went to the School to inform management of the cause of the death of the student to enable them take proactive steps.
According to Kofi Siaw, health officials have begun rolling out measures to avoid a spread of the disease.
Siaw said there is calm in the school with the students and teachers going about their normal activities.
According to the Health Director, Dr Mrs Charity Sarfo, they are closely monitoring at least 22 students who had close contact with the deceased person before he died.
There are fears the 22 may be going through an incubation period of bacterial meningitis.
“These 22 students are being followed up to ensure that should they also develop any such symptoms they will be picked up and given the necessary treatment,” she said.
