Former Ghana coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor has lauded the involvement of Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan in the Black Stars’ setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Akonnor believes the contributions of the two former national team captains played a crucial role in the team’s success.
“The inclusion of former players, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan, has positively impacted the team, boosting confidence with their experience and leadership,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.
Appiah currently serves as the Vice Chairman of the senior national team’s Management Committee and is also responsible for Player Relations.
Gyan, though holding no official role, actively worked with the team in the lead-up to their qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
Ghana secured back-to-back victories in those fixtures, defeating Chad 5-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium before traveling to Morocco, where they sealed a 3-0 win over Madagascar.
Gyan accompanied the team for both matches, reinforcing his presence and support.
The Black Stars will regroup in June for a four-nation tournament in England before resuming their qualification campaign with games against Chad and Mali in September.
