Member of Parliament for Akuapim North, Sammi Awuku, has voiced strong opposition to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, warning that the move poses a serious threat to the independence of the judiciary.
His reaction follows President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to suspend Justice Torkornoo after a prima facie case was established from three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.
Taking to Facebook, Awuku described the suspension as a deeply troubling development in Ghana’s democratic journey, raising fears that it may be an attempt to intimidate the judiciary and undermine its autonomy.
“This moment marks a concerning chapter in Ghana’s democratic journey,” Awuku wrote, cautioning that the implications of the suspension go beyond the individual involved.
He went on to criticize the President’s decision as a dangerous display of unchecked executive power, warning that such actions risk weakening the country’s judicial system.
“History reminds us that absolute power can erode the very foundations of justice,” he stated.
Awuku’s comments add to growing public debate over the implications of the Chief Justice’s suspension, with legal and political observers closely watching how the situation unfolds.
