The Civil Society Alliance has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate and decisive action against illegal mining activities, citing their devastating effects on the environment.
Speaking at a press conference, Nana Amoasi VII, Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security, appealed to the President to issue a directive to halt all illegal mining operations across the country.
“We urge you to issue a bold directive to halt all illegal mining activities immediately to deter those who defy the law,” he emphasized.
Nana Amoasi VII also advocated for the repeal of the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulation 2022 (L.I. 2462) and called for stronger enforcement of existing mining laws to tackle the menace effectively.
The Chairman of the Civil Society Alliance, Dr. Steve Manteaw, joined the appeal, stressing the need to address corruption that fuels illegal mining.
“We want John Mahama to issue a bold statement in terms of how he intends to fight corruption in general, including corruption in the allocation of mining licenses,” he said.
