Chief petitions Interior Minister, IGP to probe three senior police officers

The Chief of Aboso, Nana Kwabena Asante I, has submitted a formal petition to the Minister of the Interior, Henry Quartey, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, requesting an investigation into the actions of three senior officers within the Western Central Regional Police Command.

Dated September 3, 2024, and signed by the Chief, Queen Mother Nana Akosua Akomaso, along with other key community leaders, the petition calls for a thorough review of the officers’ conduct.

The officers named in the petition include the Western Central Regional Police Commander, the Tarkwa Divisional Police Commander, and Aboso Police Chief Inspector Joseph Bosman Amoako.

The petition alleges that the officers have not upheld the ethical standards expected of the Ghana Police Service, and specifically criticizes Chief Inspector Amoako as no longer serving the community effectively.

“The actions of the Tarkwa Regional Police Command amount to human rights abuses and pose a threat to the peace and security of the area, particularly within Aboso and its surrounding communities,” the petition stated.

Filed with both the Ministry of the Interior and the IGP’s office on September 11, 2024, the Chief’s letter outlines two major grievances:

Firstly, the officers are accused of supporting “certain miscreants and non-indigenous groups” in an attempt to install a rival chief in Aboso, despite the presence of a legally and traditionally recognized chief.

Secondly, the Western Central Regional Police Commander is accused of repeatedly verbally abusing traditional leaders, including the Nifahene, who has warned of legal action if the misconduct persists.

Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, the Chief stated, “We urge your office to address this matter with the urgency it demands, to prevent further escalation. As chiefs and elders, we are committed to preserving the peace and security of the Aboso community.”
