Chief, elders of Ejura express appreciation to Akufo-Addo for compensation payment to shooting victims

The chief, queen mother, and elders of Ejura have expressed their appreciation to President Akufo-Addo and his administration for the prompt action and payment of compensation to those affected by the disturbances in Ejura in 2021.

Addressing the President at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, the Chief of Ejura Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region, Barima Osei Hwedie II, conveyed their gratitude to the President and government for compensating three individuals who sustained injuries during the shooting in Ejura, located in the Ejura-Sekyeredumase Municipality of the Ashanti Region in 2021.

He also conveyed the appreciation of the entire Ejura community to the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare for her support in constructing a new police station, which has led to the elevation of the Ejura Police Command to the status of a Divisional Police Command.

In response, President Akufo-Addo welcomed the chief of Ejura and his delegation to the Jubilee House and acknowledged their gesture of gratitude to the government for compensating deserving individuals.

He urged the chief and elders of Ejura to ensure that the prevailing peace in the community is maintained.

Background

The government, through the Ministry of the Interior, presented GH₵1,218,897.00 as compensation to three individuals who were injured during the shooting in Ejura in the Ejura-Sekyeredumase Municipality in 2021.

The compensation was presented by the Chief Director for the Ministry of the Interior, Mrs. Adelaide Anno-Kumi, at the Ejura Chief’s Palace to the injured persons: Mr. Louis Ayiku (GH₵347,953.00), Mr. Nazif Nuhu (GH₵192,425.00), and Mr. Awal Mesbaw (GH₵678,519.00), totaling GH₵1,218,897.00.

In June 2021, two individuals, Nasiru Yussif and Murtala Mohammed, were killed in Ejura during a street protest. As a result, a committee was established to investigate the matter, and their work led to the recommendation for the payment of compensation.

Overall, the government presented GH₵1,718,897.00 to both the bereaved families and the injured. In 2022, the two bereaved families also received GH₵500,000.00.
