Chereponi, Bunkpurugu curfews lifted as security improves

-

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, has lifted the curfews on Chereponi and Bunkpurugu in the North East Region, effective immediately. The decision follows a recommendation by the North East Regional Security Council.

In a statement issued on Friday, February 21, the minister cited the commitment of local chiefs and residents to maintaining peace, along with improvements in the area’s security situation, as key factors behind the decision.

The government expressed appreciation to the chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, and youth for their efforts in fostering harmony and urged them to continue resolving issues through peaceful dialogue.

Curfews had previously been imposed and periodically renewed due to security concerns. On January 29, 2025, Chereponi’s curfew was renewed from 10:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m., while Bunkpurugu’s last renewal on November 12, 2024, set restrictions from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

The lifting of these curfews marks a positive step towards lasting stability in the region.
