The Chief Executive Officer of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, has shared some impressive statistics about the institution.

Describing Korle Bu as the third largest hospital in Africa, Dr. Ampomah said Korle Bu performs over 20,000 surgeries annually and manages approximately 2,000 patients every day.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday, Dr. Ampomah said despite having a 1,800-bed capacity, Korle Bu is the third largest hospital in Africa in terms of patient numbers and output.

The hospital, he stated, is also one of the largest land areas on the continent.

Dr. Ampomah noted that Korle Bu employs over 8,000 staff members, who are all on payroll.

He added that, if they were to incorporate additional institutions like a Medical School and the School of Hygiene, their staff numbers would increase.

Korle Bu’s medical team he noted includes nearly 800 doctors and over 300 specialists, covering nearly every field of medicine.

“We have about 800 medical doctors in Korle Bu, and our community is massive. Despite the uncertainties during the pandemic, we have been able to do a good job” he said.
