CDD Citizen Expectation Townhall: Council of State must be abolished – Oti residents

-

Residents in the Oti Region have called for the abolition of the Council of State, citing concerns over its relevance and effectiveness in Ghana’s governance structure.

Speaking at a town hall engagement organized by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD), participants argued that the Council, established under the 1992 Constitution as an advisory body to the President, has not significantly impacted governance or enhanced democratic accountability.

“Instead of serving the people, the Council of State seems to be more of a ceremonial body,” one resident remarked.

They believe scrapping the council would streamline decision-making processes and make government more responsive to the needs of citizens.

However, the call to maintain the four-year presidential tenure was widely supported. Many residents argued that four years is enough time for a president to implement policies while ensuring accountability through regular elections.

“Four years is enough time for a president to show their capabilities. If they fail, we should have the opportunity to elect someone new,” another participant stated.

The discussions reflect a broader national debate on governance reforms, with increasing demands for transparency and efficiency in Ghana’s democratic system.
