The Executive Director of the Global Intelligence and Security Analysis Center, Samuel Nana Appiah, has called on the Interior Minister-designate, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, to caution his security guards against performing a gun salute in his honor.
His comments came after a viral video surfaced, showing Muntaka’s security personnel discharging gunshots following the announcement of his name on President Mahama’s appointment list as the interior minister.
“It is quite unfortunate for someone appointed to such an important position to be saluted with gunshots,” Appiah stated in an interview with Adom News.
He emphasized that even the President of the Republic is not saluted with gunfire and that such actions could set an inappropriate precedent.
Mr. Appiah said the Interior Minister-designate, Muntaka, holds a position of considerable responsibility and influence in the country’s security framework.
He further pointed out that the public expects individuals in such roles to abide by the law and uphold lawful conduct, stressing that security personnel must act responsibly and not discharge weapons without proper justification, highlighting the need for accountability in the security sector.
“Security personnel should not discharge ammunition without a valid reason,” Appiah said. “This must be addressed, and those responsible should be held accountable to prevent future incidents.”
Mr. Appiah urged Muntaka to take immediate action and remind his security personnel of the importance of maintaining professional conduct and following established procedures.
