The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra has organized a protest march against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, following a “Service of Preparation” held at the Holy Spirit Cathedral.
The event, held today, Friday, October 11, 2024, drew Catholic worshippers and environmental activists from various parts of the capital.
During the service, Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi, SVD, called on God to intervene in the fight against environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.
He encouraged the participants to stay committed to advocating for the protection of Ghana’s natural resources.
Worshippers, activists, and members of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey” group assembled at the Cathedral, holding placards with messages demanding an end to illegal mining operations.
The protest, which was peaceful, was supported by police officers who guided the demonstrators along their planned routes.
Emmanuel Wilson Jnr, the chief crusader of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey,” reiterated that while the president’s directive for military involvement and collaboration with the small-scale miners’ association is a temporary measure, a total ban on mining activities is necessary to safeguard Ghana’s environment.
The protest walk is part of continuous efforts by religious and civil society groups to intensify the fight against galamsey, which has caused widespread environmental damage throughout the country.
Following the service, participants began their walk, holding their placards high as they marched through the streets.
