Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers goals meant Phil Foden’s late reply for the visitors was little consolation.

Defending champions City have dropped to sixth in the Premier League, nine points behind leaders Liverpool having played two games more, while Villa have moved above them into fifth.

It is now nine defeats in 12 games in all competitions for City, who are winless in their last eight away matches, as their season continues to spiral downwards.

Guardiola made six changes from the Manchester derby defeat last week but it made little difference during another laboured performance.

Villa, who had won just three of their previous 11 top-flight games, earned a much-needed victory, one which keeps their top-four hopes firmly alive.

They were rarely troubled, although Emi Martinez saved well from Foden in the first half, and Villa continually found ways past City’s frail backline.

The tone was set inside the first minute as City needed Stefan Ortega, in for the injured Ederson, to twice bail them out.

He brilliantly turned Pau Torres’ header on to the bar, the goalkeeper clawing the ball out from almost over the line, having already saved from Duran following Josko Gvardiol’s mistake after just 15 seconds.

Worse was to come after 16 minutes when City were sliced open by Youri Tielemans’ brilliant through-ball. He found Rogers to advance and unselfishly square for Duran to beat Ortega.

City were unable to respond until it was too late and Rogers, who spent two years at Etihad Stadium without making a senior City appearance, sealed victory for Villa with a fine low finish after 65 minutes, making Foden’s injury-time strike meaningless.

2024 CHANQ: We are focused on ourselves and not the rivalry – Didi Dramani ahead of Nigeria clash https://www.adomonline.com/2024-chanq-we-are-focused-on-ourselves-and-not-the-rivalry-didi-dramani-ahead-of-nigeria-clash/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 11:25:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486424 Black Galaxies head coach, Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, says his team is concentrating on their preparations rather than the rivalry with Nigeria ahead of their African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying clash.

The two teams will battle for a spot in next year’s CHAN tournament, which will be held across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Ghana will host Nigeria for the first leg of the playoffs at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, December 22, before travelling to Nigeria for the return leg at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday, December 28.

Despite the fierce rivalry between the nations, Dramani emphasized that his focus remains on his team’s development, not the historical tension between the countries.

“We focus on the team rather than the rivalry. While we respect the history, we are more concerned with our technical, tactical, and psychological preparation,” he told CAFOnline.

He also highlighted the importance of managing pressure and encouraging players to emphasize teamwork over individual achievements.

“The players are reminded to channel the pressure positively, emphasizing collective performance over individual efforts.

“We remind the players that this is their moment to write history. The rivalry is a backdrop, but the focus remains on executing our game plan. We emphasize professionalism and staying composed under pressure,” he added.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Black Galaxies will face Nigeria in the playoffs.

In the previous edition, Ghana triumphed over Nigeria on penalties to secure a place in the tournament, though they were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

I am not behind Black Stars struggle – Kwesi Nyantakyi https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-not-behind-black-stars-struggle-kwesi-nyantakyi/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 11:24:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486028 Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has strongly denied allegations linking him to the poor performance of the Black Stars.

His comments come in response to accusations made by Prophet Samuel Agyarkwah, also known as Akwankyerɛ Papa, who claims that Ghana’s football struggles are due to a spiritual attack orchestrated by Nyantakyi.

According to the prophet, the former GFA boss spiritually “tied” Ghana football in the Northern Region to hinder his successors’ progress and secure his legacy.

Prophet Agyarkwah reportedly told Mothers FM/TV, as quoted by Ghanasportspage: “The truth is that Ghana Football is under spiritual attack which has caused its downfall. Ghana football is being tied in the Northern Region by a popular ex-GFA President. The reason is to block his successors from shining so that he will be remembered forever.”

In an interview with Joy Sports, Nyantakyi dismissed the claims as baseless and absurd.

“The Black Stars does not belong to me; the team belongs to Ghanaians. How can I engage in spiritual machinations for the team to fail?” the former CAF 1st Vice President said.

“I was the President of Ghana football, not the Black Stars. In 2006, when we launched our football policy in Cape Coast, it was a comprehensive plan for the development of Ghana football as a whole.

“We consistently revised and implemented policies for governance, marketing, youth football, women’s football, player and referee development, among others. Was that about the Black Stars alone?

“Even as recent as October 2017, we had a three-day Summit in Cape Coast to engage stakeholders, holistically looking at how best we can administer football in the interest of all Ghanaians. Was it only about Black Stars?

Nyantakyi reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana football, expressing his willingness to share his experiences if called upon to support its progress.

“Why would I sabotage something that brings joy to Ghanaians simply because I am no longer at the helm? Do I even have that power? I celebrate just like any other Ghanaian when the team wins and I feel sad when it loses a match.

“Ghanaians should treat these baseless claims with the contempt they deserve. I have played my part in football development, and my tenure was never meant to last forever,” he said.

Highlighting global examples of leadership transitions, he added: “FIFA has moved forward without Sepp Blatter; CAF is thriving without Issa Hayatou. Why can’t Ghana football do the same without me? The Black Stars’ current challenges are not my doing.

“It is a figment of someone’s imagination and it should not be attributed to me,” he concluded.

During Nyantakyi’s tenure as GFA President, Ghana achieved remarkable milestones, including appearances at three consecutive FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014) and becoming the first African country to win the U-20 FIFA World Cup in 2009.

Ghana for the first time in 20 years failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) having finished at the bottom of Group F with three points after six matches.

2024 CHANQ: We have developed a team philosophy ahead of Nigeria game – Didi Dramani https://www.adomonline.com/2024-chanq-we-have-developed-a-team-philosophy-ahead-of-nigeria-game-didi-dramani/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 09:51:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486419 Black Galaxies head coach, Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, has revealed that the team has developed a strong philosophy ahead of their crucial match against Nigeria in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) playoffs.

The highly anticipated first leg of the encounter will take place on Sunday, December 22, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off set for 15:00 GMT.

The return leg will follow on Saturday, December 28, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Nigeria.

Ahead of the match, Dramani discussed the team’s preparation and the philosophy they have instilled.

“First of all, a team is not just built overnight. You have to craft it carefully,” he told CAFOnline.

“We have worked on creating a strategic structure with a clear team culture that emphasizes professional communication among the technical staff, players, management, and the football association.

“We’ve developed a team philosophy aligned across all levels, focusing on defensive and attacking phases, and progressively introducing these aspects in training sessions.

“This strategic framework ensures our players and staff are well-oriented before the game,” he added.

The 2024 CHAN tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Two years ago, Ghana triumphed over Nigeria in a penalty shootout to secure their spot in the last CHAN edition, though they were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

2024/25 GHPL: Hearts of Oak cruise over Berekum Chelsea to return to winning ways https://www.adomonline.com/2024-25-ghpl-hearts-of-oak-cruise-over-berekum-chelsea-to-return-to-winning-ways/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 09:50:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486301 Hearts of Oak bounced back to winning form with an impressive 3-1 triumph over Berekum Chelsea in their Matchday 14 encounter at the University of Ghana Stadium on Friday night.

The Rainbow Club needed the points after suffering a painful defeat against their rivals, Asante Kotoko last weekend at the Baba Yara Stadium.

However, the Phobians took the lead early in the game when Ramzy Yussif found the net in the 16th minute, ending the first half with a 1-0 advantage.

Shortly after the break, Hamza Issah extended the lead in the 50th minute, showcasing Hearts’ dominance.

Berekum Chelsea managed to fight back as Emmanuel Sarpong scored in the 62nd minute to narrow the margin.

However, any hopes of a comeback were dashed when Kwabena Boateng sealed the victory in the 82nd minute, thanks to a well-placed assist from the standout player, Hamza Issah.

Notably, Berekum Chelsea played without their head coach, Samuel Boadu, who is currently with the Black Galaxies preparing for their CHAN qualifier against Nigeria on Sunday.

The victory lifts Hearts of Oak to 5th place on the league table with 22 points. The Phobians will look to build on this momentum when they face relegation-threatened Accra Lions on December 25.

Our target is to beat Asante Kotoko – Dreams FC coach Karim Zito https://www.adomonline.com/our-target-is-to-beat-asante-kotoko-dreams-fc-coach-karim-zito/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 09:30:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486292 Dreams FC head coach, Karim Zito has hinted that they are targeting a win against Asante Kotoko.

The former FA Cup champions will host the Porcupine Warriors in the Matchday 14 games at the Tuba Astro Turf on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

In a pre-match interview, Zito acknowledged that the current squad is comprised of younger players, many of whom are making their debut in the Ghana Premier League.

However, he emphasized that playing on home turf and drawing on past victories over the Porcupine Warriors provide a significant advantage for his side.

“I remember the year Asante Kotoko won the league (Ghana Premier League), I still beat them. But I can’t talk about it much this time around because the players I was having at that time are not the same players I’m having.

“These are younger players trying to come in.  This is the first time they have started playing in the Ghana Premier League.

“It won’t be easy for us, but since we are playing at home, we’ve set our target. Our target is to win.”

Dreams FC after 13 matches played have accumulated a meagre 12 points from 13 league matches, leaving them second from bottom in the league standings.

Kick-off is scheduled at 15:00 GMT.

What can we expect at Afcon 2025 with one year to go? https://www.adomonline.com/what-can-we-expect-at-afcon-2025-with-one-year-to-go/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 08:45:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486416 Saturday marks one year to go until the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) kicks off.

Morocco will welcome Africa for the second time, having previously hosted in 1988.

Qualifying was completed in November but several questions about the continent’s biggest sporting event remain unanswered.

BBC Sport Africa runs down what we do and do not know about next year’s feast of football.

When is Afcon 2025?

The timing of the biennial competition has shifted once again, with the congested club and international calendars creating a “scheduling nightmare” for organisers the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

The past two editions were played in January and February and a commitment made in 2017 to stage Afcon mid-year has again been overlooked.

The 2025 Afcon will begin on 21 December next year and run until 18 January 2026.

It will be the first time that the tournament is held over the Christmas and New Year period – something that could yet prove problematic.

The fixture schedule has not been announced, so there is still the potential for games to be played on Christmas Day. The first round of group action at the 2023 tournament was spread across five days.

When will players be released?

Image caption: Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana could miss several Manchester United fixtures depending on his commitments at Afcon with the Indomitable Lions

Always a topic of debate, the date for clubs to release players is yet to be determined because Afcon 2025 falls outside previously agreed Fifa windows for internationals.

The European Club Association, which represents more than 700 professional teams on the continent, will no doubt be involved in negotiations, given many African stars ply their trade in Europe’s top leagues.

Some players could come to unique agreements between club and country.

But Andre Onana’s decision to play for Manchester United in the Premier League just 24 hours before Cameroon’s first game at Afcon 2023 backfired when the goalkeeper was benched by the Indomitable Lions despite arriving, via private jet, in time for kick-off.

Warm-up games were held from eight days before the 2023 finals, but whether teams participating next year will have a full squad at that point remains to be seen.

What is the format and when is the draw?

Image caption: Sadio Mane’s Senegal and Nigeria are both expected to be among the top seeds at Afcon 2025

The format in Morocco remains the same as the past three tournaments, with the 24 teams drawn into six groups of four.

The top two in each group advance to the round of 16 along with the four best-ranked third-placed sides. The competition is a straight knockout from that point on.

Before the draw – which will be held on 27 January in Rabat – countries will be placed into one of four pots based on their position in the Fifa world rankings.

Things could be complicated should defending champions Ivory Coast not be ranked among Africa’s top six teams.

There is a possibility that the Elephants would be put into pot one anyway, relegating a better-ranked nation to pot two.

In the most recent rankings Ivory Coast were the continent’s sixth-best side but were only three places ahead of Cameroon.

Where will Afcon 2025 matches be held?

Games at the 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast were played in six different stadiums spread across five cities, with all venues having a minimum capacity of 20,000.

The same requirements are in place for Afcon 2025. Although the Royal Moroccan Football Federation has not made an official announcement it is not short options, given the country boasts arguably the best footballing infrastructure on the continent.

A 115,000-capacity stadium is being constructed on the eastern outskirts of Casablanca for when the country co-hosts the 2030 World Cup, but this will not be ready before Afcon kicks off.

The Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca staged the 1988 final but Tangier’s Ibn Batouta Stadium now has the highest capacity in the country.

The Prince Moulay Stadium in Rabat was used at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in 2022 and Agadir, Fez and Marrakesh are also front-runners to be handed games.

Who are the favourites?

One of the wonders of Afcon is its sheer unpredictability.

The past eight editions have provided seven different champions, with Ivory Coast the only nation to lift the trophy twice since 2010.

Morocco have been the top-ranked side in Africa since their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and pressure is building to end what will be a 49-year wait for their second continental title.

The Atlas Lions put in dominant performances in qualifying, scoring 26 goals and conceding just twice, to finish with the only 100% record.

But hosting the tournament is not necessarily an advantage. Only Tunisia, Egypt and the Ivorians have triumphed on home soil this century.

Nigeria will be looking to go one better after finishing as runners-up earlier this year while Senegal and Egypt will be heavily fancied.

Were there any surprise qualifiers?

There will not be any Nations Cup debutants, but Comoros and Botswana will both make just their second appearances.

Sudan pulled off a remarkable feat to qualify in the midst of a civil war, eliminating four-time champions Ghana along the way.

Uganda, who will co-host the 2027 tournament, and Benin are involved for the first time since 2019.

Seventeen sides from the 2023 edition return and there are a record seven qualifiers from the Southern African region.

Who will be the top players?

Image caption: Morocco’s Brahim Diaz was top scorer in qualifying (left) while Egypt captain Mohamed Salah and Nigeria forward Ademola Lookman have been in fine form for their club sides

This is hard to predict – but barring injuries or loss of form over the next 12 months, newly crowned African footballer of the year Ademola Lookman will lead Nigeria’s charge given his stellar performances for Atalanta.

Mohamed Salah is putting in impressive displays for Liverpool this season and the Egypt captain will be determined to win his first Afcon and end the Pharaohs’ 15-year wait for the trophy.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid forward Brahim Diaz was the top scorer in qualifying with seven goals for Morocco.

Yet some of the top performers in Ivory Coast earlier this year were surprises, as Equatorial Guinea’s Emilio Nsue won the Golden Boot, Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong was named best player and South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams outshone European-based rivals to take home the golden glove.

Afcon 2025 qualified teams

Morocco (hosts), Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Comoros, DR Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Managers deserve ‘more respect’ – Postecoglou https://www.adomonline.com/managers-deserve-more-respect-postecoglou/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 08:36:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486413 Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou says he and other Premier League managers deserve “a little more respect”.

The 59-year-old has been criticized for his tactics during an inconsistent campaign where he has stuck to his principles of high-intensity attacking football.

Spurs were on a winless run of five matches in all competitions until back-to-back victories over Southampton in the Premier League and Manchester United in the Carabao Cup.

They were 3-0 up against United with less than half an hour to play in the quarter-final before having to come through a chaotic finale to seal a 4-3 win.

“You kind of feel that 26 years of hard graft [as a manager] should get you a little more respect and I’m not the only one,” said Postecoglou.

“I have seen it happen to [Aston Villa’s former Arsenal manager] Unai [Emery] and Nuno [Espirito Santo] when he was here [as Tottenham boss].”

Postecoglou previously said being Spurs manager was harder than being the Prime Minister because of the short-term thinking involved.

Tottenham are 10th in the Premier League, despite only the top two sides, Liverpool and Chelsea, having a better goal difference.

Postecoglou added: “I get that not everyone will be a fan of the way I do things and even the way I play people will have different opinions.

“That’s normal, that’s healthy but some of it has been pretty dismissive.”

Spurs host Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday and will face them in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Postecoglou’s side are a “joy to watch” and he hopes Spurs can win a trophy as reward for their attacking football.

Postecoglu responds to Carragher criticism

Slot’s praise was in contrast to former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher, who said on Sky Sports’ coverage of Thursday’s game that Postecoglou’s side “never change how they play no matter what the game state is”.

Carragher added: “I don’t think football should be played the same from minute 1-90.”

In response, Postecoglou said: “People tell me he likes me so that’s a good thing. They say, ‘did you hear what he said? But he likes you as a person,’. So, that’s important to me.

“It’s all valid but I don’t need validation from anybody to do what I do.

“Whether you agree with my approach or not, there is validity in both and I don’t have an issue with that. I love the fact people are talking about our games and analysing our games.”

Postecoglou said he accepts pundits are paid to have opinions but believes some of the criticism is “offensive” towards him and he will “call it out” when appropriate.

He added: “Maybe I don’t take things as seriously as people want me to and I’m fairly dismissive of them, but that’s all right.

“I love my life and I’ll keep doing what I’m doing.”

Arteta was ‘terrified’ at start of Arsenal tenure https://www.adomonline.com/arteta-was-terrified-at-start-of-arsenal-tenure/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 08:33:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486408 Mikel Arteta says he was initially “terrified” when taking over as manager of Arsenal.

Friday marks five years since the Spaniard, now 42, was appointed at Emirates Stadium to his first role as a manager.

Arteta, previously an assistant coach under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, took charge following the sacking of Unai Emery with the Gunners 10th in the Premier League.

“I just wanted to make sure I didn’t disappoint anybody, that I was capable of doing it,” Arteta said.

“I was probably terrified.

“You haven’t coached anybody at the highest level, it was the middle of season, without any preparation, without a coaching staff, you get asked to take this amazing and big job.”

Arsenal won the FA Cup later that season, before finishing eighth the following campaign.

They came fifth in 2021-22 but have since become title contenders, finishing second for the past two seasons.

Arteta said his early tasks as manager included improving the “culture” at the club.

“What I did was basically ask, through somebody I employed, to give me their opinion of how they feel to work in this football club,” explained Arteta, whose side travel to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday.

“It was clear that it had to be changed.

“[It was pivotal] because that was the roots of the football club. If those roots were damaged at that level, there was nothing to build without that.

“So in the first season, we had to put the energy and big decisions into making sure those roots were clean and were in the right context and in the right place to be able to create and build what we wanted to build.”

Amorim to ‘help’ Mount after lay-off confirmed https://www.adomonline.com/amorim-to-help-mount-after-lay-off-confirmed/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 08:28:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486402 Manchester United forward Mason Mount will be out for “several weeks” with a leg injury, says manager Ruben Amorim.

The England international was forced off just 14 minutes into Sunday’s Manchester derby win at neighbours City.

Speaking after United’s Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham about Mount’s expected absence, Amorim said: “I don’t know the exact date but it is going to be long.”

Mount was making just his fourth Premier League start of the season. He made only five starts during his first season with United after joining from Chelsea in July 2023.

The 25-year-old missed five months of last season with thigh and calf injuries, and has been out for two months of the current campaign after suffering hamstring and head injuries.

Asked whether Mount is injury prone, Amorim added: “That is not my department.

“What I can do is help Mase to teach him to play our game while he is recovering, to give him that time to think about different things.

“The worst part is that we don’t have time to train as you should do while recovering with a lot of injuries. We are always travelling, we don’t train enough with the team together. It makes it hard to recover for the games.

“We try to manage it with rotation. With Mason Mount, we are going to help him and it is really hard for him to be out so long. He is trying really hard. If they try hard, we will help them to the end.”

Man City’s Dias ruled out for ‘three or four weeks’ https://www.adomonline.com/man-citys-dias-ruled-out-for-three-or-four-weeks/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 08:23:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486399 Manchester City have suffered a fresh injury blow with manager Pep Guardiola confirming Portugal central defender Ruben Dias has been ruled out for “three or four weeks” with a muscle injury.

Dias, who suffered the injury in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Manchester United, will miss the entire festive programme and potentially the FA Cup third-round tie with Salford on 11 January.

The 27-year-old also faces a battle to be fit for City’s crucial Champions League trip to Paris St-Germain on 22 January.

Dias has already missed seven games with a calf injury this season, adding to a defensive injury list that has seen John Stones, Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji and Kyle Walker all ruled out at various points, while Ballon d’Or winner Rodri will miss the remainder of the domestic season after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury.

“It’s a muscular problem and he will be out for three to four weeks,” said Guardiola.

“After 75 minutes against United he felt something. But he’s so strong and wanted to stay on the pitch. Now he’s injured.”

Guardiola confirmed Stones, Akanji and midfielder Mateo Kovacic have all trained this week and could feature at Aston Villa on Saturday (12:30 GMT), but said goalkeeper Ederson was “a doubt” with an unspecified problem.

Amid City’s current run of one win in 11 games, surprise has been expressed about Guardiola’s use of youngsters James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly.

City made a point of keeping both players despite numerous loan options. Yet McAtee has made just two substitute appearances – coming on in the last minute on both occasions – while O’Reilly is yet to make his league debut.

But it seems they will stay at the club for the second half of the season, with Guardiola replying “I don’t think so” when asked if players might leave during the January transfer window.

Guardiola ‘honest’ with his feelings

Guardiola’s mood was so downbeat in the immediate aftermath of the United defeat it was easy to imagine he might conclude he was no longer capable of doing the job.

He gave his players a couple of days off afterwards and was brighter when he spoke to journalists in his scheduled briefing before the Villa trip.

“We’d just finished a game that we lost in the circumstances and I was not happy,” he said.

“I try to be honest about the feelings of my teams. We fell down six times [number of Premier League games without a win], we have to stand up seven. There is no alternative.

“I’m fine. I’m a normal person with feelings like all of us. When the situation is going well we are better but it’s normal. I would not go to the press conference if we were 1-0 up and expressing something that I didn’t feel.”

I hope Postecoglou wins trophy with Spurs – Slot https://www.adomonline.com/i-hope-postecoglou-wins-trophy-with-spurs-slot/ Sat, 21 Dec 2024 08:20:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486393 Liverpool manager Arne Slot says he hopes Tottenham counterpart Ange Postecoglou wins a trophy as reward for his attacking brand of football.

Spurs are 10th in the Premier League after an inconsistent campaign and, although Postecoglou has been criticised for his team’s tactics this season, he recently said “in tough times you double down on your principles”.

Slot was heavily linked with taking over as Tottenham manager in 2023 before staying at Feyenoord, and takes his side to play the London club on Sunday (16:30 GMT).

Liverpool have also been drawn against Spurs in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, with Tottenham progressing after a rollercoaster 4-3 win against Manchester United.

“It’s great work that Ange is doing. I hope, hope, hope that he (Postecoglou) wins a trophy – not the League Cup but I am completely a fan of his team for the Europa League,” said Slot.

“People talk about trophies, trophies, trophies and that is so important. For me, his brand of football is so much more important.

“If he can combine it with winning something that would be so good for football in general because then people can stop talking about ‘is it too attacking?’ How on earth can you play too much attacking football?”

Slot added: “I think it is a privilege to be a season ticket holder at Tottenham and to be a fan of them at the moment because they play such a great style.”

Tottenham are the second highest goal scorers in the Premier League this season with 36 – just one behind Chelsea – having won seven and lost seven of their 16 top-flight games.

“I really have to give them credit,” said Slot. “They have always been a certain brand of football for me and a certain identity and Ange Postecoglou gives them that identity back completely.

“Every time, it is a joy to watch them. Once in a while results go against them but I think they are one of the teams to beat Manchester City like us.”

Both players, born in England, have been nurtured within Chelsea’s esteemed academy, earning recognition for their development and potential.

They showcased their abilities during the club’s pre-season tour in the United States at the start of the 2024/25 campaign and have since been training with the first team.

Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, praised the young players while officially introducing them to the senior squad.

He commended their impressive performances and encouraged them to continue improving to secure spots in the starting lineup.

This summer, George committed to a long-term contract with the club, while Acheampong signed a deal that extends through 2029, solidifying their futures at Stamford Bridge.

Despite representing England at various youth levels, both players remain eligible to switch allegiance to the Black Stars of Ghana if they choose to.

The duo recently featured in Chelsea’s commanding 5-1 victory over Shamrock Rovers F.C. in the UEFA Conference League, further highlighting their promising potential on the big stage.

Asante Kotoko: Prosper Narteh Ogum hints at January transfers https://www.adomonline.com/asante-kotoko-prosper-narteh-ogum-hints-at-january-transfers/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 11:50:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2486012 Asante Kotoko coach, Prosper Narteh Ogum has indicated that the club will be active in the upcoming January transfer window to strengthen their squad.

Ahead of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, the Porcupine Warriors underwent a major squad overhaul, signing 14 players while releasing 19.

After 13 matches, Kotoko currently sit 6th on the league table with 21 points, just three points behind league leaders Kpando Heart of Lions.

Despite their competitive position, Ogum emphasized the need to bolster the squad further.

”There are a lot. We are going to see a lot of signings, that is if all things go well. We’ve started a lot of talking and then we are sure that we will get them (their transfer targets). So we are hoping and praying that things change and even if they do, they go in our favour so that we can augment the team.”

The coach also highlighted the importance of internal competition for maintaining performance levels.

”Once we have more quality in the team, everybody wakes up. No one turns into a sleeper train because you know that when you lose your guard, someone is coming to play (in your stead),” Ogum concluded.

Asante Kotoko has already made a notable acquisition by bringing back striker Kwame Opoku on a free transfer. Opoku, who had less successful spells at USM Alger in Algeria and Olympique Khouribga in Morocco, has returned to Kotoko to make his mark.

“He is happy to be back to the club to also contribute his quota. We know he had the eye for goal and that’s the reason we are bringing him on board to come score. Either he is scoring or he is assuring other teammates to also score,” coach Prosper Narteh Ogum said.

Next on the agenda for Asante Kotoko is an away fixture against Dreams FC on Matchday 14, set to be played at the Tuba Astro Turf.

Fury and Usyk in astonishing 11-minute face-off https://www.adomonline.com/fury-and-usyk-in-astonishing-11-minute-face-off/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 10:36:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485999 Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk shared a quite astonishing 11-minute and 20-second face-off in one of the most remarkable, perhaps the longest, head-to-heads in boxing history.

Briton Fury, 36, will challenge for Usyk’s unified heavyweight title in Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

Speaking as he left the news conference, Usyk said: “Me? [Look away?] No.”

Neither man had anything of note to say in Thursday’s news conference, both insisting the talking was done.

The obligatory face-off, however, provided the most talked about moment of fight week and demonstrated the mind battle between arguably the two best heavyweights on the planet.

Fury towered over Usyk and both refused to look away inside a luxury mall in the centre of the Saudi capital.

A few minutes in, organisers began hatching a plan to separate the pair. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman was the first to try and convince them, but neither fighter broke their stare.

A piece of card and a handkerchief was then placed between them.

Sweat dripped down Fury’s head as the fighters began to share words and become more animated.

“The rabbit’s getting it this time. Butchered. Smashed to pieces,” Fury told Usyk.

“Don’t be afraid,” Usyk responded.

A shouting Fury was eventually dragged away. A few moments later, he was dancing with drummers performing outside of the news conference room.

In May, 37-year-old Usyk outpointed Fury to become the first undisputed heavyweight champion in 25 years.

‘This time I am serious’ – Fury

Before the face-off shenanigans, an edgy and intense Fury said it was no longer time for joking and that he will “do some serious damage” to his rival.

Sporting a bushy beard which he says provides added strength, Fury has been reluctant to engage with the media in fight week.

“I’ve got nothing to say, apart from there is going to be a lot of hurt and pain in this fight, you watch,” he said, with a few expletives added in.

“That’s all I got to say. Talking’s been done. The first fight I talked, I joked – all my career – this time I am serious.”

Smartly dressed in a white suit and black hat, Fury added: “I’m going to dish out a whole lot of pain.”

Paris Fury, the former champion’s wife, sat on the front row alongside two of his sons.

Earlier this week, Fury revealed he had not spoken to his wife for three months while focused on training in Malta.

As for Usyk, the Crimea-born champion – wearing a striking maroon outfit with embroidery – was serenaded to the top table by a Ukrainian singer and a choir consisting of a dozen suited men.

“Now we have just a performance with lights and cameras. Everything will take place on Saturday,” Usyk said.

Usyk stared down Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn when he tipped his fellow Briton for the win, a prediction which prompted a rare smile from Fury.

Asked if he had a final message for Fury, Usyk said: “Don’t be afraid. I will not leave you alone.”

LeBron James sets new NBA record in Lakers win https://www.adomonline.com/lebron-james-sets-new-nba-record-in-lakers-win/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 10:28:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485995 LeBron James broke the record for the most minutes played in NBA history as he helped the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Sacramento Kings.

The 39-year-old American surpassed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar when he completed his 57,447th minute on court in the 113-100 victory on Friday.

James, who eclipsed Abdul-Jabbar for the NBA all-time scoring record earlier this year, scored 19 points while team-mate Austin Reaves led with 25 points.

“It’s just a commitment to the craft and to the passion and love I have for the game,” said James.

“I don’t take much time in the off-season, a little bit more time now.”

Elsewhere, Brooklyn Nets centre Nic Claxton was ejected from the court for throwing a ball into the crowd during his side’s 101-94 win over the Toronto Raptors.

Claxton showed his frustration after being fouled on his way to the basket before being escorted off court by officials after attempting to throw a cushion.

Meanwhile, Zach LaVine scored a season-high 36 points as he guided the Chicago Bulls to a 117-108 win over defending champions the Boston Celtics.

LaVine sunk six three-pointers while adding six rebounds and four assists as the Bulls recorded their third straight victory.

French star Victor Wembanyama scored 42 points to help the San Antonio Spurs to a 133-126 overtime triumph over the Atlanta Hawks, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 35 points led Oklahoma City Thunder to a 105-99 win over Orlando Magic.

There were also victories for the Memphis Grizzlies, the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets.

‘Traumatised’ Rohr wants Libya sanctioned https://www.adomonline.com/traumatised-rohr-wants-libya-sanctioned/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 10:19:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485987 Gernot Rohr believes Libya should be sanctioned after the Benin coach and his team were left “traumatised” by the violent reaction of fans and security officers following last month’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier in Tripoli.

The 71-year-old German required treatment on the team bus after being struck by a baton while other members of support staff are understood to have been involved in confrontations as the visitors were detained in their dressing room after full-time.

Libya went into the game knowing only a win would give them a chance of reaching next year’s Afcon but the 0-0 scoreline at full-time meant Benin ultimately finished second behind Nigeria in Group D, securing their place at the finals in Morocco.

Rohr, a veteran of the game who has coached five African nations including Nigeria, says what followed was his worst experience working on the continent.

“What happened in Libya was really crazy,” he told BBC Sport Africa.

“I have never experienced such a situation like after the match in Tripoli.

“It was a crazy reaction from the public and the policemen who came and attacked us. Imagine being locked in the dressing room. We were left traumatised.

“It is dangerous and unsafe for international matches to be played in a country where there is political instability, with no security, and could have easily led to a tragic outcome.”

‘We should not wait for tragedy’

Following the end of Colonel Gaddafi’s rule in 2011, Libya has suffered from violence and instability.

The country is currently split into two administrations, with different governments claiming authority in the east and west.

The two sides signed a ceasefire in 2020 – which eventually led to Libya being allowed to play qualifiers at home again from 2021 – but rivalries continue, and Rohr believes Africa’s football authorities must do more to ensure the safety of visiting teams.

“I’ve never seen this before in all my years in African football, and no team in Africa deserves such a bad and dangerous treatment,” he continued.

“We were attacked for no reason and we should not wait for a tragedy to happen.

“So I hope that Caf (Confederation of African Football) will do what they have to do to protect future teams who are going to be playing in Libya, and I hope they can play in a safe place.”

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) declined to comment but an official told BBC Sport Africa the country “is very safe”.

Caf were contacted for comment but are yet to respond.

Libya’s controversial campaign

While Libya went into the game against Benin with hope of reaching Afcon 2025, Rwanda’s unexpected victory over Nigeria ultimately meant even three points would not have been enough for them to qualify from Group D.

The Mediterranean Knights’ chances of reaching the finals were effectively killed off when Nigeria were awarded a 3-0 victory by Caf following the cancellation of the teams’ fixture scheduled to be played in Benghazi in October.

The Super Eagles boycotted that match after their plane from Nigeria was diverted from its intended destination and the squad were stranded at an airport terminal overnight.

At the time, Nigeria Football Federation media manager Promise Efoghe said no LFF official came explain the situation, and described their experience as like being “in a prison at the airport”.

Striker Victor Boniface said on social media that the squad were left without food, wi-fi or anywhere to sleep, while captain William Troost-Ekong labelled their treatment as “disgraceful behaviour”.

A Caf disciplinary board subsequently ruled that Libya had breached two articles of its disciplinary code, as well as an article of the Africa Cup of Nations regulations.

The LFF has said it will “go to the highest levels of litigation” to overturn the sanction, meaning there could yet be a challenge to the outcome of Group D.

Benin players ‘very, very hungry’

Image caption: Rohr and his Benin team celebrated a famous 2-1 win over Nigeria in World Cup qualification in June

Having booked a place at Afcon, Rohr has already turned his attention back to the ambitious target of qualification for the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

Despite their rise up the African football ladder in the mid-2000s, Benin remain a nation of modest resources, so the coach is putting his faith in youth.

“We have a lot of young and local players,” Rohr explained.

“It is different from the other countries I had previously managed in Africa. We have half of the team under the age of 21 and 22, half of the team coming from the local league.

“That is the opposite of what I had in Nigeria, where everybody was playing in big teams, big clubs and big leagues.

“The difference is they are very, very hungry. They want to make a successful career and that’s why the ambition is very big, and it’s a special work for the coach.”

Benin first played at an Afcon finals in 2004, followed by appearances in 2008, 2010 and 2019.

The Cheetahs have never qualified for the World Cup, but Rohr believes their recent continental success is “giving confidence” to his players as they look to make history.

After four games in qualifying, they currently sit third in Group C with seven points – only behind leaders Rwanda on goal difference and second-placed South Africa on goals scored.

Rohr’s former team, Nigeria, are languishing in fifth position with just three points.

The campaign restarts in March with a trip to Zimbabwe followed by a home fixture against South Africa.

Rohr’s message remains that “everything is possible”.

‘How have Barca let him go?’ Meet Chelsea’s 18-year-old future ‘star’ https://www.adomonline.com/how-have-barca-let-him-go-meet-chelseas-18-year-old-future-star/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 10:13:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485979 He is by no means the only Chelsea youngster to catch the eye in the Conference League this season, but Marc Guiu was the name on everyone’s lips after the Blues’ latest comfortable victory in the competition.

The 18-year-old was the standout performer in the Blues’ 5-1 victory over Shamrock Rovers on Thursday, scoring a first-half hat-trick to help Enzo Maresca’s team top the league phase and maintain their flawless record in the competition.

Guiu ruthlessly capitalised on Darragh Burns’ loose header to open the scoring before intercepting Daniel Cleary’s under-hit back pass and finishing from the tightest of angles for his second goal, which restored Chelsea’s lead after Markus Poom’s equaliser.

And the teenager completed a well-taken treble in first-half stoppage time, getting on the end of Noni Madueke’s precise cross and guiding a header into the far corner for his sixth league phase goal – more than any other player in the competition.

The Spanish youth international, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona in the summer, was replaced by Joao Felix on the hour mark – but this was unquestionably Guiu’s night.

“My thought with Guiu is, how have Barcelona let him go?” former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole told TNT Sports. “This kid – in two years’ time – could be an established number nine.”

“I think Barcelona have made a mistake.”

Who is Guiu and why did Barca let him go?

To say that Guiu hit the ground running after breaking into the Barcelona first team would be a major understatement.

The La Masia graduate made an instant impact after coming on in the 79th minute of Barcelona’s La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao in October 2023, scoring just 33 seconds later to earn Xavi’s team a 1-0 victory.

His path to the senior side was much less straightforward, however. Impacted by multiple growth spurts during his teenage years, the frontman was not always a regular starter at youth level.

“He missed a lot of games,” Albert Capellas, Barcelona’s former assistant director of youth football, told Sky Sports earlier this year. “He could not train.

“What happens at a lot of clubs, if you cannot train or play, maybe you have to leave. [But] at Barcelona, we know the level of the players, we give them time.”

The Catalan club’s patience played into Guiu’s hands. He made a further six appearances for the senior team in 2023-24, scoring again in a 3-2 defeat by Royal Antwerp in the Champions League.

“Marc Guiu is a finisher,” added Capellas. “[He] is not a player who has unbelievable skills one against one, who can dribble past players. He is another type of player, but he is exceptional in his position. He has the nose to score goals.”

Barcelona are believed to have attempted to remove Guiu’s modest £5m release clause from his contract by offering an extension, but Chelsea activated that clause in June before signing the youngster on a five-year deal, with an option of a further year at Stamford Bridge.

‘I liken him to Suarez’

Guiu may have been given a helping hand with two of his three goals against Shamrock Rovers, but he displayed the predatory instinct of a seasoned frontman to capitalise on those first-half errors.

His third of the evening – a header from Madueke’s cross – was almost nonchalant.

“It was instinctive,” said Cole, reflecting on the 18-year-old’s treble. “I liken him to [former Barcelona, Liverpool and Uruguay striker] Luis Suarez.

“I’m not saying he’s Suarez right now, but he has that instinct and bravery.

“This kid can score goals. He can be a big star for this club.”

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, scorer of Chelsea’s third goal, was just as effusive in his praise of his young team-mate.

“I’ve never seen anyone press like him,” he said. “He never slows down.”

When will he get a chance in the Premier League?

Despite appearing in all Chelsea’s Conference League games this season – including the qualifying play-off against Servette – Guiu’s chances have been limited domestically.

He has not played in the Premier League since the Blues’ 2-0 loss to champions Manchester City in their opening game, when he replaced the injured Nicolas Jackson.

He was a second-half substitute in the Blues’ 5-0 Carabao Cup victory over Barrow – but their fourth-round exit at the hands of Newcastle denied Guiu further opportunities to impress in that competition.

It has been a different story in Europe, however, with Guiu averaging a goal every 47 minutes in the Conference League league phase – the best record in the competition.

His six goals have come from 19 shots, earning him an impressive conversion rate of 32%.

Jackson’s rich vein of form in the Premier League and Christopher Nkunku’s goalscoring exploits in the Conference League may have delayed a proper first-team breakthrough, but Maresca suggested it is only a matter of time before the teenager is given a chance to shine on a more regular basis.

“He is a bit unhappy as Nicolas and Christopher are doing well,” the Italian said after Thursday’s win.

“When you are a nine and another nine is doing well, it is a matter of being questioned. It’s important that they work hard day-by-day.

“Then they [will] get a chance.”

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Spurs will host Liverpool at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London on Sunday evening, with Ange Postecoglou’s team hoping to upset the league leaders and boost their own ambitions of climbing up the log – though the Australian tactician has admitted that the Reds have been outstanding so far in the 2024-25 season.

“They’ve set a fast pace and a very high standard,” said Postecoglou. “They deserve a lot of credit for that, the players and their manager. But our focus will not be on them, it will be on our own abilities and our own game plan. What has happened in the past will not affect the outcome of this game.”

The round opens on Saturday afternoon in Birmingham with a clash between Aston Villa and Manchester City – two teams who have had their struggles of late and need a strong three-point showing heading into a very busy festive-season period.

“We believe completely in our work. We are enjoying the Champions League, and in the league we are more or less where we were [last season],” said Villa manager Unai Emery. “Our challenge is to fight and see how our level is with the opponents. There are still matches to play and we are going to recover our confidence, trying to build the team. We have to try to be better than we are being now. We can individually do better.”

Saturday also features a London derby between Crystal Palace and Arsenal at Selhurst Park, before a busy Sunday afternoon is headlined by Chelsea visiting Everton, and Manchester United hosting AFC Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

The Blues have continued to grow in strength since their stuttering start to the season, with Senegalese striker Nicolas Jackson proving to be a fantastic spearhead for their attack. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca recently paid tribute to the West African star.

“We are very happy with Nico and the way he is playing on the ball, but especially the way he is playing off the ball, the way he is pressing. In this moment we are very happy and we are sure he is going to improve and do even better game after game,” said the Italian tactician.

La Liga preview: Barcelona host Atletico as Sevilla travel to Real Madrid https://www.adomonline.com/la-liga-preview-barcelona-host-atletico-as-sevilla-travel-to-real-madrid/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 09:57:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485971 The meeting of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid headlines Matchday 18 in La Liga, with 10 fixtures played across Friday 20, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 December – the last block of games in Spain’s top flight for the year 2024.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Barcelona and Atletico will meet at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium in Montjuic on Saturday night, with the hosts looking to extend a run of five straight La Liga wins over their visitors from the capital city.

Barca have enjoyed a strong first half of the season, though some wobbles in November and December suggest that they will need to up their game – both for this clash against Atletico, and further on in 2025 if they are to attain their goals for the season.

“I don’t think there is a lack of confidence in the players. Players alone can’t win games, it’s always about the team. We need to have good connections in defence and in attack,” said Barcelona manager Hansi Flick. “I believe in the players. I have confidence in them, but things are as they are. When I started here I told them there would be no excuses.”

Atletico, meanwhile, will hope to see a continuation of form from Julian Alvarez, who has come into his own in recent weeks and earned particular praise from manager Diego Simeone.

“He [Alvarez] needed time. All footballers need time, and those who have hierarchy have to be waited for,” explained the Argentine. “Julian, since he started, has gone from less to more. He grew in his ability to interpret how Atletico plays.

“He comes from a different style in Argentina, and also totally different at [previous club Manchester] City. He needed his time. Atletico is this, and they interpret it better and better. All his attributes do our team a lot of good.”

La Liga champions Real Madrid will also be involved in a potential thriller, as they welcome Sevilla to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Los Blancos are unbeaten against the team from Andalusia in a run which stretches back to 2019, but Los Nervinenses have been unpredictable this season and could capitalise on a lack of fluidity – and a defensive injury crisis – which has hampered Real severely this term.

The round also features Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad visiting Osasuna and Celta Vigo respectively, as well as Valencia hosting Alaves, and a Friday night clash between Girona and relegation-threatened Real Valladolid.

The round opens on Friday night at the Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium, where Verona will host AC Milan. While the Rossoneri are not considered Scudetto contenders, coach Paulo Fonseca is pleased to see his team’s progress – albeit under constant scrutiny and pressure.

“It seems to me that we improve in something, then other problems arise,” the Portuguese explained. “But it’s not because you win that you have to think everything is fine by closing your eyes to the problems. I can’t close my eyes, we talked about the problems. It’s important to work on the problem. When we work on the problem we had in the game the team has a positive response.”

Saturday’s top matches see Genoa host title hopefuls Napoli at the Comunale Luigi Ferraris Stadium in the early evening, before Scudetto dark horses Lazio will play away to Lecce at the Ettore Giardiniero Stadium.

Patrick Vieira, who took charge of Genoa last month, is hopeful that his team will continue to progress – even when faced with the challenge of one of the top teams in the league.

“What we are working on will take time, but of course it is also important to keep collecting points even as we grow as a team,” said the French football legend. “We will face many challenges, but it is important that we remain together as a unit, and have the faith and backing of our supporters.”

Sunday is headlined by Atalanta welcoming Empoli to Bergamo, before Juventus chase an away win over Monza, while Monday features high-flying Fiorentina at home to Udinese and Scudetto holders Inter Milan welcoming Como to the San Siro.

Atalanta have produced some sensational football this season, with manager Gian Piero Gasperini crediting the players – especially star performers, such as Nigerian Ademola Lookman – for laying the foundation of their current growth.

“We are in a good period of form in Italy and Europe. I’m happy with the performances and results we are getting,” Gasperini explained. “Winning the Europa League last season helped us grow in confidence and self belief. Many new players have arrived and are improving, but it was last season’s success, driven by players like Lookman, that set the tone.”

Moshiri says he leaves Everton ‘in a better place’ https://www.adomonline.com/moshiri-says-he-leaves-everton-in-a-better-place/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 09:45:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485961 Farhad Moshiri says the end of his Everton ownership has left him with “mixed emotions” and that he wonders where the club might have been had Carlo Ancelotti remained at Goodison Park.

The British-Iranian businessman’s tenure in charge of the Toffees came to an end on Thursday after he sold his stake in the club to the Friedkin Group in a deal believed to be worth in excess of £400m.

The takeover has prompted Everton fan groups to look forward with “hope and optimism” after a particularly chaotic period under Mosihiri.

The club were beset by a difficult relationship with fans, managerial upheaval, relegation battles, boardroom collapse, Premier League points deductions, and a financial crisis that pushed Everton to the brink.

In an open letter to supporters Moshiri acknowledged a sense of “sorrow when reflecting on the past” after a “challenging” time on Merseyside but said he leaves the club “in a materially better place” than the one he inherited.

“I fully understand that in football that results on the pitch are paramount and over those same years they frankly haven’t been good enough,” Moshiri wrote.

“We brought top-class managers like Carlo Ancelotti to the club and who knows where we might have been had he not been lured back to his first love Real Madrid.”

Moshiri said in the letter that leaving Everton with an “iconic stadium” for “all Evertonians, and the wider community, to enjoy for decades and decades to come” was something he would “feel real pride in”.

“When I purchased the club eight years ago, I knew it needed to be modernised, both with a new stadium and also at the training ground, which has seen much investment,” he added.

“I have met the huge costs of those improvements through my ownership, with season ticket prices remaining pretty well the same across my ownership period.

“I have tried to minimise the impact on fans with our tickets among the most affordable in the Premier League.”

‘Look forward with hope and optimism’

A statement from the Everton Fan Advisory Board (Fab) said that apart from the development of the club’s new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, the time under Moshiri was a trying one.

“Our recent history has been clouded by relegation battles, financial uncertainty, failed ownership bids, a leadership vacuum and unjust sporting sanctions,” Fab said.

“Today’s announcement provides the opportunity for Evertonians to once again look forward with hope and optimism.”

Fab said it was “encouraged by the aims and ambitions” set out by the Friedkin Group following their takeover.

“Providing clarity and communicating about the road ahead will be essential. We recognise that change will not come overnight,” Fab added.

“We look forward to hearing more about their plans in the coming weeks and months and working alongside them to help achieve their aims of embracing the passion, creativity and values of Evertonians.”

Black Stars: Otto Addo visits Leicester City duo Fatawu Issahaku and Jordan Ayew https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-otto-addo-visits-leicester-city-duo-fatawu-issahaku-and-jordan-ayew/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 09:07:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485844 Black Stars coach, Otto Addo paid a visit to Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and his fully recovered teammate Jordan Ayew.

Fatawu Issahaku, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation, has been sidelined for the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury.

The 24-year-old sustained the injury during Ghana’s Matchday Five clash against Angola in Luanda as part of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Unfortunately, this injury also rules him out of Ghana’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar scheduled for March next year.

On a brighter note, Jordan Ayew has made a full recovery and rejoined Leicester City after overcoming an injury he picked up during Ghana’s AFCON qualifier against Angola on November 16, 2024.

Coach Addo’s visit highlights his dedication to both the well-being and progress of national team players, whether they are actively competing or on the road to recovery.

Don’t compare me to Drogba, I haven’t reached his level yet – Jackson https://www.adomonline.com/dont-compare-me-to-drogba-i-havent-reached-his-level-yet-jackson/ Fri, 20 Dec 2024 06:21:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485991 Can Chelsea keep up the pace at the top and continue their charge for the title this weekend?

Well , it won’t be easy, that’s for sure.

Standing in their way is a resilient Everton side, who have shown an upturn in form recently. Buoyed by their draw against Arsenal, Everton will be looking to once again steal points from one of the big boys of the Premier League.

Chelsea, however, will know that only a win will suffice if they are to close the gap on Liverpool at the top.

Ahead of the clash, Showmax chatted to Senegalese-born Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson. The striker has been at the forefront of Chelsea’s fine form of recent games, and he could be the difference come the weekend when they face off against a tough Everton team.

Tell us a little bit about your background and your personal life growing up?

I’m obviously Senegalese, but Senegalese and Gambian because my dad is Gambian and I went to Gambia when I was young. When you’re young, normally in Africa, you always go to your dad’s place, you know? And so, I went to my dad’s home, and then I went back home to Senegal when I was maybe 14 ,15, to be with my mum again.

Tell me about your mom. Did she work on a farm? What role did she play in your love for football?

I don’t think my mom loved football. My mom didn’t care what I was doing, she just wanted me to be successful and do what I want to do. So it’s not like she forced me to play football, she just wanted me to be happy and do what I want, but do the right thing, not something bad. She was working on the farm. She’s always working. Not just her, everybody in Senegal loves that. All the mothers go to the farm or they sell, so, it was normal.

Why did you decide to pursue football?

It’s difficult to choose, so you just have to do what you want to do and try to go with it 100%. So I did football and then decided I’m just going to play, and I went all out in training every day. And then I went to the teams and I played street football when I was young, of course. I started off in first division, then went to Villareal and now I am at Chelsea.

Tell me a bit more about street football because, you know, you’re a Premier League footballer now, life is very glamorous, but not too many years ago you didn’t even have a pair of football boots.

We didn’t have original boots because it’s too expensive, so normally I played with my school shoes or barefoot because my family didn’t want me to play. It’s not that they didn’t want me to play. They didn’t just want me to waste my time playing football because it’s too difficult to be successful in football in Senegal. You have to be very talented or lucky to go. Maybe two players leave in 10 years or two players leave in five years. So it’s not that they didn’t want me to play, it’s just they didn’t want me to waste my time playing. So, they said, no, don’t play, just study, study, study, study. So I was always studying.

You must have had incredible belief because you just said only one or two make it out and your family wanted you to study. How did you know you were going to be one of those who made it big?

I knew since I was young. My dad asked me when I was about four or five, what I want to be in the future and I said, a football player. He told me it was difficult to succeed. I knew I had to work very hard and I wasn’t scared of being successful.

You played at school. You played in the streets. Then your first taste of organised football is with ASC Tilene. What was that experience like?

It was difficult, especially when I came to Spain because I didn’t have that experience. I was just running and playing with the ball and dribbling a lot. In Spain, they tried to teach me where to stand, I was like, bro, just let me play. And then I understood more. So, it’s like three years of trying to learn tactics and try to run behind.

Let’s go back to going to Casa Sport because you earned a nickname there. I think in the first game people saw you and called you Neymar.

Yeah, it was in Tilene, they called me Neymar, because I just loved dribbling.  I was trying to do what he does, many things on the pitch.

You moved to a new continent, a new country in Spain, and had to learn a new language. How did you adapt?

It was difficult because I didn’t speak the language, but obviously I was living with other people, and ‘m not a quiet person. I like to socialise with the people, so, I was learning. I learned Spanish quickly. In six, seven months, I was good. Speaking Spanish, or at least trying to because no one spoke English. Only one guy. So I had to speak Spanish. But it was nice living in Villarreal. I was living in Ciudad Deportiva, so there I was learning Spanish and then I moved to the house and then I went on loan to Mirandes then came back to Villareal’s b-team, and then eventually into the first team.

That loan deal that you mentioned. How did that affect you mentally? Did it make you more determined to make it work to prove yourself?

Yeah, I  think it helped me a lot because that time I was in the under-19 team and then I think Mirande was in second division, so they took me from there. I had a hamstring injury so I went there. I had to recover from my hamstring injury and start playing. I went there and I played a lot of games when I started and when it was cold, I started to get injured again, so I had to come back to Villarreal. When I came back I got put in the b-team and that made me angry. But I told myself, look, I’m not ready. I showed that I’m not ready yet to be in the first team, so I have to stay one year more in the B-team and then try to prove myself and go to the first team.

So I tried and changed everything around me, try to improve everything, food and people around me as well. And, that year we did amazingly and we went to second division. And then Unai Emery took me to the first division that year, to the first team, and then I was starting every game.

What was it about that year when you were in the B-team? What did you do besides change things around you?

When you are not injured, you get more confident in your legs and run better. So, I changed everything around me. And then I was feeling better.

And then Unai saw you, took you to the first team. What was it like working with him?

It was amazing. He taught me maybe 50% of what I know tactically. And because he is top tier, he changed everything. I used to play like a kid, but he got me playing like a man.

How much of that street football or, you know, the rough diamond do we still see in your play today?

It’s a different me. I don’t even see anything of when I was young. Now I play to win. It’s different. Now it’s professional, you play to win, not play to have fun. You know if it’s playing to have fun you can just play outside in the street. But now we play to win. So that’s what I didn’t know before. And I know that football now is about winning.

I hear that you were very willing to learn. Was that just because you wanted to make it to the top? Are you very open to learning in order to be the best?

I’m open to learning from people I know want to help me. Not everybody, you know. But I’m stubborn as well. So I like to listen to people that want to help me. But the pressure is it’s normal because when you’re in a big team and you want to be the best, if you cannot handle the pressure, I think you should not play football because football is all about that, because they don’t know what you’re doing off the pitch. They just know what you’re doing on the pitch so they don’t care what you’re doing off the pitch. So, you just have to handle the pressure and try to play football and enjoy it and try to win.

How did your move to Chelsea come about?

I was playing well at Villareal and scored 12 goals that year. After the season I was going on holiday. I told my agent, I don’t want to talk about any club now, I  just want to enjoy myself please.

But there was interest from a few clubs, I think some teams in Milan. But one day my agent just calls me and tells me we are going to Chelsea. I said, oh, good. He said, but there is too much pressure. I said, don’t worry, If I was not ready I would tell you. But I know  I am ready for that level.

I was ready to face the pressure, but I think even my friends were saying, oh, don’t go to Chelsea. I think some people in the national team told me, no, don’t go because there is too much pressure. I said, bro, but we’re different, you know?

It sounds like that stubbornness you were talking about because you just knew you were going to make it at Chelsea?

I haven’t made it yet. I’m just improving. I  haven’t made it yet. You are making it when you are starting every week, every year, scoring 30 goals or something. Like winning, winning something, you know?

Your  start was very difficult at Chelsea though, wasn’t it?

It was very difficult, but nothing is easy in life, but it’s different now though.

I don’t mind the difficulties and challenges. Also, the more I hear people saying bad things about me, the more it drives me. You know, criticising me. I just love this.

Do you feel you settled in at Chelsea now?

I’m feeling good. Very good. With the players, with the coach, when they’re playing. And there’s no pressure it means, you are doing well. I am just trying to focus and work harder.

As an African goal scorer playing for Chelsea, the comparison that was inevitable was you and Didier Drogba. Do you feel it? How do you feel about it?

I don’t compare myself  with anyone, because I  haven’t reached the level of a Drogba as yet.

Didier is like a legend in Africa and a legend in Chelsea. He won everything. I haven’t won nothing yet. I haven’t done nothing yet. So, I don’t really like the comparison, but it’s nice. It means  you’re heading somewhere, and you just try to work harder to be like him or more than him.

What is it like representing the Senegal national team? In the last international break you scored your first goal. What was that feeling like?

I was very happy because it was my first goal there, and my only goal right now. When I joined the national team, there was big names, so you have to settle down. It’s not easy there, you know? So, I was very happy to score. And seeing those big players celebrate with me like Sadio Mane, was special. I think I watched Mane from when I was a young boy.

You do charity work in Senegal. Can you tell me a little bit more about that. How much it means to you, why it’s important to, you?

I’m not just working for myself. I’m working, of course, for myself, for my family, for the people that I grew up with, my friends. So, it’s nice when you do this kind of thing and know if I had that before, it would be better, but I didn’t have it. So if I have it, it’s nothing, it’s just, you know, a little something that every month I try to give to the people what they need, like food,

I give boots as well to the to the boys. I try to take the boots off the players here and some I buy. Some I take from Nike and try to give to the kids in Ziguinchor [in Senegal]. So not everybody will have, but a few would.

You struggled in the beginning at Chelsea and now you’ve made it. You said you haven’t done anything yet. What are your hopes and ambitions and dreams for the future?

I have personal dreams. I have it in my mind. Maybe when I finish football, I’ll talk about it, you know.

But from a football point of view? Obviously, every year, win a trophy, be the best  in the world. And that’s obviously since I was young, that’s what I was, why I play football to win trophies and be the best goal scorer.

What about the manager Enzo Maresca, how he’s adapted to what he wants, how he’s helped you?

He’s amazing because he was obviously last year with Leicester and he has been at Man City. So he has a lot of experience in helping all the players, bringing new ideas to the play, and helping the team a lot and he has a winning mentality and ambition too. He is also a very amazing person. So, we’re very happy to work with him and I hope we do amazing things together. We travel together and have many happy moments together in Chelsea.

Have you set any immediate targets for this season? Like a certain number of goals you want to score?

Not me personally, my brain is always okay, so that’s not for sharing.

2024 CHANQ: Black Galaxies will make Ghanaians proud against Nigeria – Annor Walker https://www.adomonline.com/2024-chanq-black-galaxies-will-make-ghanaians-proud-against-nigeria-annor-walker/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 23:01:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485603 Former Black Galaxies head coach, Annor Walker, has expressed optimism about the team’s prospects ahead of their upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers against Nigeria.

This marks the second time Ghana will face Nigeria in the CHAN playoffs.

With the first leg set for Sunday, December 22, at the Accra Sports Stadium, Walker is confident in the team’s chances.

He believes that under the guidance of current head coach Didi Dramani, the Black Galaxies have been thoroughly prepared and are primed to secure a strong result.

“I have had the chance to watch the team train at Prampram, and I was impressed,” the veteran Ghanaian coach told Asempa FM‘s Ultimate Sports Show.

“You watch them play, and you can see that they are well prepared and ready for this game against Nigeria. I know games between these countries are always difficult, but I know that Didi Dramani and the Black Galaxies will make Ghanaians proud,” the former Great Olympics and FC Samartex coach added.

As part of their preparations, the Black Galaxies played a friendly against Togo, securing a 2-1 victory.

The return leg against Nigeria will take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, while the CHAN tournament itself will be held in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania early next year.

2024 CHANQ: It will be tough for Black Galaxies against Nigeria – Former captain https://www.adomonline.com/2024-chanq-it-will-be-tough-for-black-galaxies-against-nigeria-former-captain/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 23:00:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485646 Former Black Galaxies skipper, Gladson Awako has predicted a challenging match as Ghana prepares to face Nigeria in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.

The two footballing rivals are set to renew their fierce competition, with Ghana hosting the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.

The reverse fixture is scheduled to take place at the Godsway Akpabio Stadium in Nigeria.

Reflecting on their past encounters, Awako acknowledged the formidable nature of Nigeria’s squad but remains hopeful about Ghana’s chances.

“The Black Galaxies will face a tough test against Nigeria. We knocked them out the last time, so this game won’t be easy for either side. Nigerians always see themselves as superior, but I’m confident we can surprise them,” Awako said during an interview on Asempa FM’s Sports Nite.

Awako, a U-20 World Cup champion, also highlighted the critical role of discipline and teamwork in securing victory.

“The players must remain humble and adhere to the technical team’s guidance. Our technical team is experienced and knows how to approach crucial games like this,” he added.

The stakes are high, as the winner of this two-legged tie will secure a spot in the CHAN tournament, set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in 2025.

France footballer Paul Pogba’s brother sentenced to year in prison in extortion case https://www.adomonline.com/france-footballer-paul-pogbas-brother-sentenced-to-year-in-prison-in-extortion-case/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 22:59:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485705 A Paris court on Thursday sentenced a brother of France midfielder Paul Pogba to a three-year prison term, with two years suspended, after convicting him in a high-profile extortion case.

Mathias Pogba will be able to serve his one-year sentence with an electronic bracelet rather than behind bars.

The court also fined Paul Pogba’s brother 20,000 euros for participating in the attempted extortion of 13 million euros ($13.5 million) from Pogba in 2022, and for putting pressure on the player, his family and his business contacts to obtain the payment.

The case involving six men linked to Paul Pogba has shocked the French football world because the alleged perpetrators included three childhood friends and Pogba’s own brother.

The five other defendants were found guilty of extortion, kidnapping and detention, as well as participation in a criminal association, and sentenced to up to eight years in prison, as well as fines of between 20,000 euros and 40,000 euros.

Roushdane K., considered to be the mastermind of the case and the only person to appear in custody, was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment.

Mathias Pogba’s lawyer Mbeko Tabula said the ruling was “extremely harsh,” adding he planned to appeal.

“He’s obviously in a state of shock,” he said of his client.

“From the outset, he has maintained his innocence, saying that he was manipulated, that he was coerced, that he was pressured, that he would never have acted negatively towards his brother.”

Mathias was the one to go public in the case, publishing a video on social media in August 2022 promising revelations about his younger brother that were “likely to be explosive”.

Pogba told French investigators he had in March 2022 been “tricked by childhood friends” from the gritty Paris suburb where he and Mathias grew up.

He accused them of snatching him before he was held at gunpoint by two hooded men with assault rifles, demanding 13 million euros for “services rendered” and blaming him for not helping them financially.

Pogba said at the time that he had paid them only 100,000 euros.

EFL Cup: Tottenham beat Man Utd 4-3 in remarkable tie https://www.adomonline.com/efl-cup-tottenham-beat-man-utd-4-3-in-remarkable-tie/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 22:53:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485847 Son Heung-min scored direct from a corner as Tottenham beat Manchester United 4-3 in a thrilling EFL Cup quarter-final punctuated by goalkeeping errors.

Dominic Solanke also netted twice for Spurs as they reached the last four for the first time since 2021-22, with stand-in goalkeepers Fraser Forster and Altay Bayindir arguably guilty of two errors apiece.

Spurs took the lead from their first real attack in the 15th minute, with Bayindir spilling Pedro Porro’s drive to Solanke, who tucked home via the near post.

They then added two further goals early in the second half as United defended dismally. Dejan Kulusevski lashed home when Lisandro Martinez failed to clear James Maddison’s cross, then Solanke beat the Argentine with ease to make it 3-0 in the 54th minute.

But United were given a lifeline in comical circumstances just after the hour. Moments after making a brilliant save from Joshua Zirkzee’s header, Forster passed straight to Bruno Fernandes, allowing the United captain to tee up the Dutchman for a tap-in.

Things got worse for Forster with 19 minutes to play, as United substitute Amad Diallo slid in to divert the goalkeeper’s casual pass into the net.

Spurs pulled two ahead again when Son’s 88th-minute corner sailed over a clawing Bayindir and into the far corner, with United unable to force a leveller despite Jonny Evans reducing the arrears once more in the 94th minute.

Conference League: Guiu hat-trick helps Chelsea to win over Shamrock Rovers https://www.adomonline.com/conference-league-guiu-hat-trick-helps-chelsea-to-win-over-shamrock-rovers/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 22:22:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485841 A first-half hat-trick from Marc Guiu alongside goals from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Marc Cucurella were enough to ease Chelsea to a 5-1 win over Shamrock Rovers.

The result secures the Blues top spot in UEFA Conference League League Phase, while Rovers finished 10th, bagging them a place in the playoff round.

Chelsea dominated the early exchanges and took the lead courtesy of a breakdown of communication in Rovers’ backline as Darragh Burns headed past his own goalkeeper to give Guiu the easiest of tap-ins.

Rovers then had their dream moment as just a short while after conceding, they won a corner which found its way to Markus Poom who fired in a volley from the edge of the box.

However, the away fans delight was quickly derailed as another mistake at the back, this time Daniel Cleary under hitting a back pass, allowed Guiu to once again pounce and add his second of the game, restoring Chelsea’s lead.

The hosts then turned up the intensity and added two more before the break. First a composed finish from Dewsbury-Hall, before Guiu completed a first half hat-trick, just seconds before the whistle, expertly guiding home a Noni Madueke cross.

The second period was a similar affair as Chelsea began using it as an opportunity to give a raft of youngsters first-team minutes.

Yet, it was one of their senior men who completed the rout as Cucurella applied an accurate finish with his right foot to score Chelsea’s fifth and final goal of the game.

It was a commanding performance to round off a perfect league phase for Chelsea as they finish top with six wins from six.

Meanwhile, Rovers will no doubt be better for the experience but after dropping down to 10th will now face a playoff game in February.

Her poise, strategic depth, and determination caught the attention of chess enthusiasts and experts alike. Competing against seasoned players with years of international experience, Banini held her ground and displayed remarkable resilience under pressure.

“It’s been an incredible journey,” Banini remarked after the event. “To play at the Olympiad has always been a dream of mine, and to leave with a title is beyond what I imagined.”

The Road to WCM

The Woman Candidate Master title is awarded by FIDE, the international chess federation, to players who demonstrate exceptional skill and win at least 50% of their games and should have played a minimum of 7 games during the olympiad.

In key matches, Banini exhibited a mastery of opening strategies, calculated middlegame tactics, and endgame precision that earned her crucial victories.

A Trailblazer for Women in Chess

Banini’s achievement is a landmark moment for her country and for women in chess. As a role model, she inspires a new generation of girls to take up the game, break barriers, and aim for excellence. Her success underscores the growing prominence of female players in what has traditionally been a male-dominated sport.

“Gertrude’s performance at the Olympiad is a testament to her hard work and dedication,” said her alumni president, Gabriel Agbanyo.

Looking Ahead

With her WCM title, Banini is now setting her sights on future milestones. She plans to compete in upcoming international tournaments, where she hopes to further refine her skills and work toward achieving the Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title.

Off the board, Banini is also committed to promoting chess among youth in her community. She has expressed a desire to start chess programs for young girls, aiming to share her passion for the game and foster talent at the grassroots level. She also stated that she will be advocating for the creation of chess clubs in all the major regions in Ghana in order to promote chess culture in the country.

Conclusion

Gertrude Banini’s remarkable achievement at the 45th World Chess Olympiad is not just a personal victory but a source of pride and inspiration for her nation. As she continues her journey, there is no doubt that Banini will remain a name to watch in the world of chess, breaking new ground and inspiring countless others along the way.

Why I left Hearts of Oak – Gladson Awako opens up https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-left-hearts-of-oak-gladson-awako-opens-up/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 13:48:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485551 Former Hearts of Oak midfielder, Gladson Awako has shed light on the circumstances that led to his departure from the club, citing internal dynamics and his growing influence as key factors.

Awako, who previously played for Berekum Chelsea, joined Hearts of Oak in 2021 after an impressive stint with Great Olympics.

During his time with the Phobians, he helped the team secure a Premier League title and two FA Cup trophies. However, his unexpected exit in September 2023 surprised many fans.

In an interview on Asempa FM‘s Sports Nite, the U-20 World Cup winner opened up about his departure, explaining that internal politics within the club played a significant role.

“Hearts of Oak and Olympics are two different clubs. One of the clubs is political and the other is not. It got to a time they thought I was becoming too powerful so they had to get rid of me but there was no problem with me,” he recounted.

Awako attributed his increased influence to the leadership responsibilities entrusted to him by then-coach Slavko Matic.

“The leadership roles I got from the coach gave me power and they felt if they should allow me, it wouldn’t help most of them so they got rid of me,” he added.

Awako has since returned to Great Olympics, where he is focused on leading the team back to the topflight league.

Kotoko striker Albert Amoah earns praises from former coach https://www.adomonline.com/kotoko-striker-albert-amoah-earns-praises-from-former-coach/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 13:34:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485612 Former Great Olympics head coach, Annor Walker has praised Asante Kotoko striker Albert Amoah, commending his talent.

Amoah has been a standout performer in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League, making headlines after scoring the match-winner in Kotoko’s 1-0 victory over Hearts of Oak at Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

Recalling how he discovered Amoah, Walker shared, “During my time at Great Olympics, we went to Koforidua to play a game there, and I spotted Albert Amoah playing for Kwaebibirem United FC and I told my technical team to get me that player.

“He joined Olympics and he was such a good player but it was unfortunate that we couldn’t stay together for long. Albert Amoah is a talented player and I am not surprised about his start at Asante Kotoko,” he added.

Amoah will look to continue his impressive form when the Black Galaxies face Nigeria in the qualifiers for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

I have a plan to win Ghana Premier League – Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara https://www.adomonline.com/i-have-a-plan-to-win-ghana-premier-league-hearts-of-oak-coach-aboubakar-ouattara/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 13:08:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485624 Hearts of Oak coach, Aboubakar Ouattara, has expressed confidence in his plan to win the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League title, despite his team’s 1-0 defeat to Asante Kotoko.

The Phobians were undone by a last-minute goal in the 95th minute, as Albert Amoah pounced on a mix-up between Kelvin Osei Asibey and Benjamin Asare.

The loss, which came at the Baba Yara Stadium, raised questions among fans about the team’s chances of winning the league this season.

However, Ouattara remained firm in his approach, stressing that his focus remains on his long-term plan.

“I don’t, I can’t come and ask somebody his view before I do something. All the 18 clubs need to take the league. All the 18 clubs.

“No, any coach in this game, in this league, can tell you you don’t need the league. You don’t have any club to tell you need the league. We play just 13 matches.”

He further added, “You are taking your quick conclusion. We are playing just 13 matches. After the 34 matches, my plan is not to stay in the Premier League. We need one ultimate. So the plan is to win the league.”

The loss to Kotoko saw the Porcupine Warriors leapfrog Hearts of Oak into fifth place on the league table with 21 points. The Phobians, with 19 points, dropped to seventh, three points behind leaders Heart of Lions.

Ouattara will be eager to get back on track when his side faces Berekum Chelsea in their Matchday 14 fixture at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The Phobians suffered a 1-0 defeat to their arch-rivals Asante Kotoko on Sunday in the Matchday 13 fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium, marking their third consecutive loss to the Porcupine Warriors.

Speaking from the Black Galaxies camp, Asare acknowledged the disappointment of the loss but reassured fans that the team is focused on coming back stronger.

“The supporters shouldn’t give up. In the second round, things will improve for Hearts of Oak. We will also win the return leg against Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium,” Asare said.

The defeat left Hearts of Oak in 7th place with 19 points.

Next, they will face Berekum Chelsea on Friday, December 20, 2024, in Matchday 14, as they aim to revive their title challenge.

Leaving Asante Kotoko was a tough decision – Kwame Opoku https://www.adomonline.com/leaving-asante-kotoko-was-a-tough-decision-kwame-opoku/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 11:37:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485574 Asante Kotoko forward, Kwame Opoku, has shared that leaving the club was a difficult decision, especially after his return to the team.

The former Nkronsah Warriors striker rejoined Kotoko on a two-and-a-half-year contract, after departing in 2021 following a standout season.

Before his departure, Opoku was a key player for Kotoko but made the move to Algerian side USM Alger.

Reflecting on his emotional struggle before leaving the club, Opoku told the club’s media team, “Leaving Kotoko was a hard decision for me. The morning before my departure I felt bad about leaving a great club like Kotoko. It wasn’t easy because I had grown attached to the team and the supporters who made me feel at home.”

During his initial spell at Kotoko, the 25-year-old striker had a significant impact, scoring nine goals and establishing himself as a vital player.

Despite his strong performances, he left the club without winning any trophies—a situation he is determined to change upon his return.

“I have to help the team as a whole to achieve its goals to win trophies and compete on the continent. I couldn’t win any trophy in my first stint but I believe this time I have a lot to offer,” he added.

Opoku, who was officially unveiled ahead of Kotoko’s victory over Hearts of Oak last Sunday, is expected to form a strong attacking partnership with the in-form Albert Amoah.

However, it remains uncertain whether he will feature in this weekend’s Matchday 14 fixture against Dreams FC at the Tuba Astro Turf.

Ex-Asante Kotoko assistant coach David Ocloo lands top job in Togo https://www.adomonline.com/ex-asante-kotoko-assistant-coach-david-ocloo-lands-top-job-in-togo/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 11:36:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485567

David Ocloo, the former assistant coach of Asante Kotoko, has been appointed the new head coach of Togolese Premier League club AS OTR Lome.

Ocloo’s appointment follows his recent resignation from his assistant coaching role at the Ghana Premier League side. He is set to take over from Messan Ametokodo.

Details of Ocloo’s contract have not been disclosed.

AS OTR Lome’s season began with a disappointing 2-3 defeat to ASC Kara at home. Ocloo’s first challenge will be to rebuild the team’s confidence and get them back on track.

Ocloo was instrumental in Asante Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League title win in the 2021-22 season.

He has also made significant contributions at Hearts of Oak, where he played a key role in their success in domestic competitions.

Currently, positioned mid-table in the Togolese Premier League, AS OTR Lome is hopeful that Ocloo’s experience will help them rise in the standings.

FIFA Rankings: Ghana close 2024 ranked 77th globally, 14th in Africa https://www.adomonline.com/fifa-rankings-ghana-close-2024-ranked-77th-globally-14th-in-africa/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 11:12:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485561 Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, will conclude the 2024 football year ranked 77th in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

While this marks a drop of four places globally, they maintain their 14th position in Africa.

The team’s decline follows a disappointing campaign in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, where they failed to secure a spot in the tournament for the first time in 20 years.

Ghana had been ranked 73rd globally as recently as October but struggled to keep up with African powerhouses such as Morocco, Senegal, and Egypt.

Under coach Otto Addo, the Black Stars managed only three wins from 15 matches in 2024, with just two of those victories coming in official competitions.

The team’s highest global ranking during the year was 67th in February, but inconsistent performances led to a steady slide to their current position.

Despite their global challenges, the Black Stars’ African ranking places them ahead of teams like Zambia and Gabon, though they trail Cape Verde and Burkina Faso.

At the global level, Argentina remains at the top of the FIFA rankings, followed by France, while Spain and England occupy third and fourth positions. Brazil holds steady in fifth place, with no changes in the top ten since July.

Looking ahead, the Black Stars aim to bounce back in 2025 as they resume their qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

They face Chad and Madagascar in March, hoping to turn around their fortunes after a difficult year.

We’re not scared of saying we want to win – Saka https://www.adomonline.com/were-not-scared-of-saying-we-want-to-win-saka/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 10:27:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485548 Bukayo Saka says he and his Arsenal team-mates are “not scared” of saying they want to win the Premier League or Champions League this season.

The Gunners have finished runners-up to Manchester City in each of the past two domestic campaigns, and head into the festive period this year third in the table – six points off top spot.

They returned to the Champions League last season after a six-year absence, reaching the quarter-finals.

It is four years since Arsenal won a major trophy, and Saka is determined to help them end that run this season.

“We’re not scared. The last two seasons we’ve competed for the league and come very close,” he told BBC Sport in an exclusive interview.

“We’re also back in the Champions League – we have some experience there now – so we feel we’re ready to compete for every trophy.

“We really want to take that next step and try to win something.”

Saka was part of the Arsenal squad that won the FA Cup in 2020 but has also experienced the disappointment of losing two European Championship finals, and twice finishing second in the Premier League.

“It’s horrible, I’ll be honest,” he said.

“It’s just that extra fuel for me and extra motivation. I want to get it over the line this season and try to lift the trophy, for sure.

“You work the whole season and you’re so close, you’ve literally got one hand on the trophy, you’re in the final or you’re right there to win the Premier League, or whatever trophy you’re competing for that season, and then you don’t win it… it’s like the whole year’s work… and nothing to show for it.

“I know you can be proud of the season and evolution and development, but that’s why more than ever we want to take the next step and win.”

Saka on recognition and set-pieces

At 23, Saka has already become one of the first names on the teamsheet for both club and country.

This season he has scored nine goals and provided 12 assists in 22 appearances.

The Arsenal academy graduate has previously spoken about how Cristiano Ronaldo is one of his idols, and Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said it would be “positive” if he sought to match the Portugal great’s career numbers.

Saka says recognition from those around football is “not so important”.

“I feel like I know what I want to achieve in the game and people are always going to talk regardless whether I do something or whether I don’t do it,” he said.

“Even if we win, people will still talk. So my mentality is just ‘do your thing and live your life’ because people are going to talk regardless.”

Arsenal have developed a reputation as set-piece specialists, and have scored 23 goals from corners since the start of last season – more than any other Premier League team.

“We’re a top side and we happen to be top at set pieces as well,” Saka said.

“We have some big players and players who are very hungry to score.

“I can’t say anything negative about it. So, yeah, let’s just continue scoring set-pieces and hopefully it can bring us more points.”

Saka on Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel will start work as England head coach in January, and Saka says the prospect of working with the German is “exciting”.

Tuchel won the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund and two Ligue 1 titles at Paris St-Germain, including a domestic treble in 2019-20. He became Chelsea manager in January 2021, winning the Champions League, Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup.

“He’s a coach who has won in the past,” said Saka.

“He has top experience, so I think everyone is looking forward to working under him to see if we can continue and to see if we can take the next step there also.

The Three Lions’ next matches are in March, when they face Albania and Latvia in World Cup qualifiers.

In reaching the top, Saka has not forgotten the people who helped him in his football journey.

He was recently reunited with his first coach – Colin Nixon. Saka was six when he played for Nixon at Greenford Celtic and they were brought together again by the Chase football coaching programme, which is helping people from low-income backgrounds get into coaching by fully funding their qualifications.

Saka has taken time out to support the project and encourage the next generation of coaches.

“I think every player you see, most of them had a coach – like Colin, for me – they started with… the coaches that believed in them… that gave them the opportunity,” he said.

“People like Colin, we value a lot. It was really nice to reunite with him because I did my first session with him about 17 years ago.”

Donnarumma suffers nasty facial injury in PSG win https://www.adomonline.com/donnarumma-suffers-nasty-facial-injury-in-psg-win/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 10:22:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485545 Paris St-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma had to be replaced after suffering a nasty facial injury during their 4-2 win at Monaco in Ligue 1.

The Italy international was caught in the face by the boot of Monaco defender Wilfried Singo and needed about 10 staples to close the wounds.

He was replaced by Matvey Safonov in the 22nd minute with the score at 0-0. Singo was not punished, with the challenge reckless but without intent.

PSG boss Luis Enrique, said: “The refereeing decisions? I can’t do anything, I couldn’t see the action, but when you see an action like that it’s always difficult.

“The players don’t intend to hurt. It’s difficult to referee this kind of match, I’m not talking about the refereeing work.”

In a statement released after the match, PSG said the goalkeeper will have “medical examinations” on Thursday and will have to “rest for several days”.

Desire Doue put PSG ahead but Monaco went 2-1 up thanks to Eliesse ben Seghir’s penalty and Breel Embolo’s strike.

But Ousmane Dembele netted twice for PSG, either side of a Goncalo Ramos header, to put them 10 points clear at the top going into the Christmas break.

Friedkin Group completes Everton takeover https://www.adomonline.com/friedkin-group-completes-everton-takeover/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 08:51:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485598 The Friedkin Group has completed its takeover of Everton, ending the turbulent tenure of Farhad Moshiri.

The deal for 99.5% of the club is believed to be worth in excess of £400m and the Toffees become the 10th club in the Premier League under majority American control.

The group reached an agreement with Moshiri on 23 September and were awaiting regulatory approval, with the Premier League having the final say on the deal, and this has now been granted.

The Texas-based group is led by chairman Dan Friedkin and also owns Italian Serie A club Roma. Friedkin has a net worth of £6.16bn, according to Forbes.

Friedkin has been proposed as the chairman of Everton’s board, with Marc Watts serving as executive chairman.

Watts, the president of the Friedkin Group, will be responsible for the management of the club.

Friedkin said in an open letter: “I take immense pride in welcoming one of England’s most historic football clubs to our global family, the Friedkin Group. Everton represents a proud legacy, and we are honoured to become custodians of this great institution.

“Whilst we are new to the club, we fully understand the vital role Everton plays in local culture, history, and the lives of Evertonians here and around the world.

“We are deeply committed to honouring this legacy while contributing positively to the community, economy, and people of this remarkable city.”

British-Iranian businessman Moshiri first bought a 49.9% stake in Everton in 2016, before increasing his holding to 94.1% in 2022.

Everton, who have not played outside the top flight since 1953–54, have been in the bottom half of the Premier League for the past three seasons – finishing 16th, 17th and 15th – and are at the wrong end again in 16th.

Sean Dyche’s team play second-placed Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday (14:00 GMT) and representatives of the Friedkin Group are expected to be at the game.

What are the details of the deal?

Everton have been acquired by Roundhouse Capital Holdings, an entity within the Friedkin Group, which has bought Moshiri’s 94% stake in the club held through Blue Heaven Holdings. Through further debt-to-equity conversions, Roundhouse will increase its holding in the club to 99.5%.

The Friedkin Group has outlined a vision for a “sustainable and successful” future which includes strengthening the men’s first team, cultivating home-grown players through the academy and a distinct on-pitch and commercial strategy for the women’s team, as well as maximising the potential of the new stadium.

Everton are due to move from their Goodison Park home to a 52,888-capacity stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock from the beginning of next season.

The Friedkin Group’s chief financial officer Ana Dunkel will join the board, while Colin Chong will remain as interim chief executive until a permanent appointment is made.

Incoming executive chairman Watts said: “Today marks a momentous and proud occasion for the Friedkin Group as we become custodians of this iconic football club. We are committed to leading Everton into an exciting new era both on and off the pitch.

“Providing immediate financial stability to the club has been a key priority, and we are delighted to have achieved this.

“While restoring Everton to its rightful place in the Premier League table will take time, today is the first step in that journey.”

Watts said the immediate priority is to stabilise Everton and improve performances on the pitch, adding that most of the club’s debt has been turned into equity, repaid or refinanced on more favourable terms.

How did we get here?

The Friedkin Group had agreed a deal in principle to purchase Moshiri’s 94% stake in June.

But talks were called off a month later after the two parties failed to finalise an agreement. That followed Miami-based 777 Partners being unable to a complete a deal earlier this year.

In a complex saga surrounding the takeover, American businessman and Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor was then granted a period of exclusivity in August but could not finalise a deal because Premier League rules prohibit individuals from owning more than one team.

In June, it was said that Friedkin wanted Roma and Everton to sit at the top of “a multi-club model”.

Everton’s appeal to the Friedkin Group was said to be based on the club’s history, fanbase and the new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which is close to completion.

The end of Moshiri

The deal brings to a conclusion the turmoil of Moshiri’s reign.

During his tenure, Everton have had eight permanent managers and two caretakers in charge of the team, with the past three seasons all featuring battles against relegation.

Many supporters became deeply unhappy and protested about his ownership, with Moshiri mostly absent from matches at Goodison Park since October 2021.

He and the club were hit hard by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with Everton suspending commercial sponsorships with USM Holdings, which was part-owned by Alisher Usmanov.

The billionaire had his assets frozen by the European Union and Moshiri resigned from his role as chairman in the company when Usmanov was sanctioned.

Moshiri had been looking for a buyer and agreed to sell his stake to 777 Partners in September 2023, but eight months later it missed a deadline to complete the takeover.

Last season, Everton were deducted points twice – amounting to a total of eight after an appeals process – for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules.

“I truly believe that the transaction with the Friedkin Group is the best outcome for the club and its future success,” said Moshiri.

“Despite a challenging geopolitical backdrop, a significant amount has been achieved over the last couple of years including the delivery of a new sporting department, the stabilisation of our finances and the delivery of our iconic new stadium.

“I now hand over to new owners confident in the outlook for the club and that our incredible fans will see the success on the pitch that they so thoroughly deserve.”

Everything shows I can coach Black Stars – Bashir Hayford https://www.adomonline.com/everything-shows-i-can-coach-black-stars-bashir-hayford/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 22:27:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485089 Heart of Lions head coach, Bashir Hayford has expressed confidence in his ability to lead Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars.

The veteran coach’s declaration follows his impressive performance in the ongoing 2024/25 Ghana Premier League, where he has guided his team to the top of the table after 13 matches.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Sports Nite, Hayford emphasized his qualifications and readiness for the role.

“Why do you ask? What does it take to coach the Black Stars? Everything shows I can do the job.” Hayford said.

“So if you see competence in me, give it to me; if you don’t see any competence, don’t give it to me,” he added.

Hayford’s comments come at a time when Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is under heavy criticism after the team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is yet to announce a decision on Addo’s future.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars will aim to redeem themselves in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, with crucial matches against Chad and Madagascar scheduled for March 2025.

Appoint a competent Sports Minister – John Mahama told https://www.adomonline.com/appoint-a-competent-sports-minister-john-mahama-told/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 22:26:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485140 President of New Edubiase FC, Abdul Salam Yakubu has called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to appoint a capable and committed Youth and Sports Minister.

In an interview with Asempa FM’s Sports Minister, Abdul Salam voiced his concerns about the lack of progress in Ghana football under President Akufo-Addo’s administration and emphasized the need for the new government to take a different approach.

He stressed that the growth of football in the country largely depends on a visionary and dedicated Sports Minister.

As a result, he urged Mahama to appoint someone with the expertise and authority to guide the sport toward success.

“The current government appointed two sports ministers in eight years. What have they done? We need a sports minister who is very serious and can take our football to a different level,” Abdul Salam said.

Recent years have been difficult for football in Ghana, with the Black Stars failing to make an impact in major tournaments.

Most notably, for the first time in 20 years, the team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points from six matches.

The team’s poor performance included three losses and three draws against Sudan, Niger, and Angola.

2024 CHANQ: We have a good chance to qualify – Didi Dramani ahead of Nigeria game https://www.adomonline.com/2024-chanq-we-have-a-good-change-to-qualify-didi-dramani-ahead-of-nigeria-game/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 22:25:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485107 Black Galaxies head coach, Mas-Ud Didi Dramani is optimistic about his team’s chances of qualifying for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

For the second year in a row, Ghana will face Nigeria in the playoff round for a spot in the tournament, which has been rescheduled for next year.

In the previous edition, Ghana triumphed over Nigeria, securing their place through a penalty shootout victory two years ago.

As they prepare for the first leg on Sunday, December 22, Dramani is confident in his team’s ability to overcome their West African rivals.

“We are playing against one of the best countries in terms of football in Africa and Ghana is equally a very quality side when it comes to African football. The chances are very bright and that is what we are doing,” the former Black Stars assistant coach told SuperSport Blitz.

“We are working on trying to put together a team, building the process and being able to have the cohesion and the fluidity of the way we want to play. When we bring in the effort and the energy and our adaption in terms of our tactical element we should be able to sail through,” he added.

In preparation for the two-legged tie, Ghana recently defeated Togo in a friendly, with Albert Amoah and Issah Yakubu scoring the goals.

The CHAN tournament will be held in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania next year.

Mbappe strikes as Real Madrid beat Pachuca to win FIFA Intercontinental Cup final https://www.adomonline.com/mbappe-strikes-as-real-madrid-beat-pachuca-to-win-fifa-intercontinental-cup-final/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 22:24:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485382 Real Madrid eased to victory against Mexican side Pachuca in the Fifa Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar.

Kylian Mbappe’s first-half strike at Lusail Stadium – the venue where he scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final exactly two years ago – set Real Madrid on their way before Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr scored after half-time.

Mbappe gave Madrid the lead late in the first half, tapping home from close range after Vinicius had rounded Carlos Moreno in the Pachuca goal.

Rodrygo doubled Madrid’s lead seven minutes into the second half with a sublime curling striker from the edge of the box.

The goal stood following a pitchside monitor review, with referee Jesus Valenzuela deciding that Jude Bellingham had not interfered with play while standing in an offside position.

Pachuca captain Salomon Rondon had Thibaut Courtois stretching to save a long-range free-kick, before the former West Brom and Everton striker, 35, sent a header narrowly over the crossbar.

A day after being named men’s player of the year at the Fifa Best awards, Vinicius added a third from the penalty spot after Lucas Vazquez was brought down by Oussama Idrissi.

The inaugural edition of the Intercontinental Cup – essentially a replacement for the Fifa Club World Cup, which will instead take place next summer – involved the winners of five continental club competitions taking part in a straight knockout tournament.

Pachuca, winners of the Concacaf Champions Cup, defeated Caf Champions League holders Al-Ahly of Egypt to reach the final. Uefa Champions League winners Madrid did not take part in the previous rounds.

EFL Cup: Jesus hat-trick helps Arsenal beat Palace to reach semis https://www.adomonline.com/efl-cup-jesus-hat-trick-helps-arsenal-beat-palace-to-reach-semis/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 22:19:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2485378 Gabriel Jesus scored his first home goals in a year as his hat-trick helped Arsenal come from behind to beat Crystal Palace and reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Palace looked capable of pulling off a shock when they took the lead with their first shot of the match – Jean-Philippe Mateta getting the better of Jakub Kiwior to score the opener.

Mikel Arteta made eight changes from the side that started their goalless draw with Everton at the weekend, with Kieran Tierney making his first Arsenal appearance since the 2023 Community Shield, but the players who came in did not largely have the desired effect.

Arteta, sensing that the game was slipping away from Arsenal, introduced captain Martin Odegaard and William Saliba at half-time.

They looked a different team – Raheem Sterling hitting the bar from close range after Henderson saved his initial effort – before Odegaard slipped an inch-perfect pass to Jesus, who controlled excellently before chipping the ball over Henderson to level the match.

Jesus then got his second of the match when he was played into the box by second-half substitute Bukayo Saka and he fired low into the bottom corner.

The forward looked marginally offside when he reacted to get on the end of Saka’s pass but, with no VAR until the next round, the strike stood.

The Brazilian completed his hat-trick when he again was found by Odegaard and drilled his shot past Henderson to win the game.

There was time for former Arsenal player Eddie Nketiah to grab a consolation goal but Arsenal held firm to reach the last four.
