JJ Rawlings Foundation, family commemorate three years of passing https://www.adomonline.com/jj-rawlings-foundation-family-commemorate-three-years-of-passing/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 08:07:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2318070 The JJ Rawlings Foundation and the family Sunday commemorated three years of the passing of former President Jerry John Rawlings, describing his loss as a “difficult pill to swallow.”

On Thursday, November 12, 2020, Ghana was shaken by the sudden demise of the former President.

“The shock and pain of the loss of a husband, father and champion of the masses was very heavy to bear and is indeed still a difficult pill for many to swallow,” said the Foundation and Family in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency.

“Today marks three years of the loss of a man who endeared himself to millions in our country Ghana, our continent Africa, and across the world.”

Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings stood for selflessness and a rare form of candour.

He was a strong man whose approach to leadership had redefined what “we ought to espouse as leaders regardless of our fields.”

The former President’s courageous hands-on style of leadership, juxtaposed with his understanding and appreciation of the struggles of the common man defined his raison d’etre right throughout his life.

As the nation marked the third year of his passing, he would be remembered as ‘a man of the people,’ the statement said.

Former President Rawlings was a soldier’s soldier; a patriot; a fighter for the people, who loved his country deeply.

He remained boldly steadfast in his position on political and social issues that affected Ghana and other countries within the continent.

As President and former President, he never paused in his desire to help the underprivileged or distressed as in the cases of Buruli ulcer in the 1990s and the memorable photograph of him standing knee deep in flood waters at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

“We cannot forget how one June 4 morning he cut short the celebration to visit the site of the June 3, 2015 disaster also at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle,” it said.

“As the JJ Rawlings Foundation and Family, we join all Ghanaians whose lives were impacted by President Jerry John Rawlings to celebrate his memory.”

The statement called on Ghanaians to revive the spirit of nationalism and love for country above personal pursuits and political bias.

Former President Rawlings stood for integrity, probity, accountability, equity, transparency and selflessness, it said.

It urged Ghanaians to reflect on his lifetime of dedication to those ideals and embody them in their daily lives.

“As we celebrate the memory of Chairman Rawlings, we pray that we will unite as a people to lift high the image of our country, pursuing Ghana’s socio-economic revival and development with selflessness and purposeful devotion.”

The statement added: “The trying political and economic circumstances of the time led to social unrest which culminated in what has come to be known as the Uprising of June 4, 1979.”

Below is the full statement by the Foundation:

PRESS RELEASE

June 2, 2022

EXHIBITION, THEATRE PERFORMANCE TO MARK JUNE 4, 1979

As part of activities marking the 43rd anniversary of the June 4, 1979 Uprising, the J.J. Rawlings Foundation is hosting an exhibition and theatre performance at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Science on Saturday June 4, 2022 at 5pm.

The Foundation is hosting the exhibition and theatre performance in order to contribute to the historical chronicle of the uprising and historical moments in Ghana’s history that led us to the Uprising.

This offers an opportunity for interaction and discourse, and also serves as an academic exercise, particularly in the fields of research, history, politics, and African studies.

The trying political and economic circumstances of the time led to social unrest which culminated in what has come to be known as the Uprising of June 4, 1979. That action had first been preceded by a failed mutiny of May 15, 1979.

In the early hours of June 4 1979 Flt. Lt. Rawlings and six other accused of the May 15 attempt were forcibly released from jail and that served as a catalyst for the June 4 revolt.

May 15 and June 4, 1979, brought the difficulties facing the nation to the fore and challenged the youth, particularly student groups and the junior ranks of the Armed Forces and the country at large, to take their destiny into their hands and change the course of Ghana’s history.

June 4, 1979, was a spontaneous reaction. The theatre performance hopes to relive the circumstances of the uprising and help to better chronicle the occurrences of the period.

Speaking on Adom TV‘s Ahosepe Xtra with host Sister Sandy, Madam Awindor, the biological mother of Ghanaian songstress Efya, said she never wanted her pregnancy to be an excuse for not working.

Additionally, she said it took the intervention of the First Lady to stop her after someone reported her condition to her.

She told me its not normal and advised me to drop off… I was on camera shooting and I was not lazing around.. I had to be ahead of her all the time… there was no tripod so you will always stand akimbo and there was no time, she narrated.

Climaxing her speech, the veteran presenter said pregnancy shouldn’t be a hindrance in pursuing desired career as a woman.

These things all happen while I was still making babies and I have two boys. So there is nothing you cannot do with pregnancy… otherwise you can still do your work… you can dance around it. It doesn’t have to get scary. You can do it and pls test it, she said.

It is no secret that former President Rawlings was a deep lover of nature and animals as has been recounted on a number of occasions by all who came into contact with him.

So much so that, as far back as while in Senior High School, Mr Rawlings was the only one who was able to ride a notorious horse known to all as ‘Lucifer’. Riding the horse required one to be able to do so without a brass and thus the former president was one of only two people who could do so.

He said though the former President may have to share this acclaim with other leaders of the member states of ECOWAS, Mr Rawlings’ contributions to peacekeeping and conflict resolution in the sub-region cannot be understated.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile Saturday, the security expert said Ghana’s contribution to peacekeeping and conflict management in the sub-region under the leadership of Mr Rawlings had led to the creation of ECOMOG which saw to the temporary ceasefire in Liberia.

“So to start with, the country descended into a very long civil war from eve of Christmas 1989. At the time you’d know that the PNDC was still in power. Unfortunately, this was at the time when he was under pressure to transition from revolution to democracy.

“Now because of the economic constraints, that I have alluded to, the Ghana Armed Forces were not very well endowed and yet he managed together with Nigeria, together with Gambia whose leader Jawara Dawda was the chair of ECOWAS at the time to mobilise what became known as ECOMOG to intervene with or without Charles Taylor’s consent.

“Of course the pretext was that Ghana was going to evacuate Ghanaian citizens and therefore the grounds was humanitarian, but of course in the absence of a ceasefire or cessation of hostilities or peace agreement, Ghana and ECOMOG ended up undertaking a peace enforcement role. And in spite of many challenges including difficulties with Nigeria, Ghana still stuck with ECOMOG, until his chairmanship of ECOWAS in 1994,” he said.

Col. Aboagye stated that Mr Rawlings’ insistence on using negotiations instead of military action to address the conflict in Liberia ultimately led to several Peace Accords which brought some peace to Liberia.

ALSO READ:

This further paved way for the ECOWAS to craft the revised treaty of 1993 and to establish the protocol relating to the mechanism for conflict prevention, management, resolution and peacekeeping in 1999.

“Now 1994 is very critical, Ghana all along subscribed to the doctrine of engaging with the players in Liberia to find an exit centered on elections. And Nigeria’s approach was to use the military option in order to defeat Charles Taylor on the battlefield.

“It took all those years from August 1990 when ECOMOG went into Liberia until about 1994, 1995 during the chairmanship of Rawlings as ECOWAS chairman for ECOWAS to now realise that the military option was not going to work. So the only option then was Ghana’s belief in the doctrine of engagement.

“So we would recall that about 1994, 1995 , 1996 we had the Accra and Akosombo series of meetings which created the conditions now but of course regional politics come in and Nigeria was not very happy that a small player like Ghana was going to take the credit for ending the conflict in Liberia and so it continued slightly into 1996 when he had left the scene for the Abuja Accord now to cement peace,” he said.

He further added that, “without Ghana I should say Nigeria’s legitimacy which was questioned as a Pariah state might have had implications for the conflict resolution effort within Liberia, so Ghana’s role was pivotal…So a bit of the credit also goes to JJ Rawlings. “

Colonel Aboagye stated that lessons from the war had also helped shape the ECOWAS’ strategy when it came to peacekeeping and maintaining order and stability in the sub-region.

Koku Anyidoho writes: The Rawlings aroma wafts everlastingly!!! https://www.adomonline.com/koku-anyidoho-writes-the-rawlings-aroma-wafts-everlastingly/ Sat, 30 Jan 2021 14:52:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1912853 When he was being sent into the world by the Creator, was I there to have known the map which was crafted around the journey of his life? Certainly not!

As an unashamed believer of the Word of God, I know it for a fact that the Good Lord created all of us in His own image, and gave us the power and mandate to have dominion over ALL other things that He created.

Our God, is, omnipotent and omnipresent; and as it is the case that He created us in His own image, I can say without any equivocation that, Jerry John Rawlings is no longer with us in-breath; however, he shall remain omnipresent as far as the political history of Ghana is concerned.

Who can dare write the political history of Ghana without the colourful kaleidoscope of Jerry John Rawlings, ala, May 15, 1979; June 4, 1979; December 31, 1981; 11 years of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC); eight years of the first period of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); and his life after leaving office?

The bright lights of the 19 years of Jerry Rawlings as President of Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana, can never be darkened by any fruitless attempts to invert that time and space of our history.

I can still see myself as an eight-year-old boy, standing on the upper deck of Kotoka Primary School in Burma-Camp, when I first set eyes on Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings – standing bare-chested atop a Mowag, at the Nicholson Park.

Those were the very heady days of the Revolution, and, Nicolson Park was one of the places where the Leader of the Military Junta, used to address the Men who were enamoured by his bravery and charisma.

I can also not forget standing atop the same upper deck of Kotoka Primary School with other pupils, as we watched the selfsame Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, carrying the casket of a certain Major Collison (an officer of the Recce Regiment), who died in the heat of the December 31, military takeover.

Apparently, Major Collison was not a target for elimination, but he was in-charge of the armory at Recce and got hit unfortunately in the heat of the takeover, so, Jerry John Rawlings exhibited his deep sorrow for the passing of the Major, by deciding to be among the casket carriers to the old location of the Garrison Methodist Presbyterian Church in Burma-Camp, for the funeral service.

I grew up from being a boy into a man with Jerry John Rawlings at the helm of Ghana’s affairs, and my strong attachment to what he stood for, and how he redeemed a dying nation from the throes of death, shall never wane.

Nobody – not even Jerry John Rawlings himself, has claimed piety; so, in eulogizing him, it is not because I am calling him a saint: he was not a saint in the saintly meaning of the word, but he succeeded in etching himself on the ASSET side of Ghana’s Balance Sheet.

Gifted with so many God-given attributes, Jerry John Rawlings had a great sense of humour, and really knew how to hold the attention of, people, groups, gatherings, nations, that he came into contact with.

He had his wits very much about him, had a natural aptitude for using words and ideas in quick as well as inventive ways to create humour to lighten up any atmosphere.

Those who were close to the late former President, know, that, there was never a dull moment around him.

Jerry Rawlings knew how to seize moments and make the best out of nothing.

Jerry Rawlings was exceptionally charismatic, and never lost any of his charisma till his departure to the place where we shall all go when God Almighty plants our departure dates on our chest.

I just turned 50, and I cannot stop thanking God Almighty for making it possible for me to have had a very close relationship with President Jerry John Rawlings and President John Evans Atta-Mills.

I am humbly honoured to have caught the attention of His Excellency President Jerry John Rawlings, the Founder of my Ghanaian political tradition, as well as, His Excellency President John Evans Atta-Mills, the man who really spotted my talents and abilities amongst the multitude, and personally called me into service for God and Country.

I shall NEVER forget the early morning of, Friday, July 24, 2020, when President Jerry John Rawlings arrived at the Asomdwee Park at 6.30 am, upon the invitation of the Atta-Mills Institute (AMI).

The AMI was marking its First Anniversary with a wreath-laying cum solemn Remembrance Ceremony at the Asomdwee Park and President Rawlings arrived; walked up to the tombstone, and placed a white rose on tombstone.

President Rawlings did not only place a white rose on the tombstone, but more touchingly, he raised his head to the heavens and spoke silently: he most certainly used the opportunity to make peace with his late predecessor.

I, Samuel Koku Sitsofe Anyidoho, I am humbly grateful to God Almighty that he made it possible for me to get President Rawlings to make peace with President Atta-Mills before he (Rawlings) left to join his predecessor in the world beyond.

I know it for a fact that the souls of President Jerry John Rawlings and President John Evans Atta-Mills, are watching eagle-eyed over me and protecting me for the exemplary love and loyalty I showed to them while they lived as my bosses and mentors.

Considering the deep heart with which President Rawlings and President Atta-Mills loved our dear Motherland, Ghana, and considering the same deep heart with which I also love Ghana, it is more than obvious that, my destiny-tooled association with the celebrated departed Leaders of my pollical tradition and the Republic of Ghana, is anchored to the, saying; Birds of the same feathers flock together, and when they flock together, they fly so high.

Jerry John Rawlings is no more: but his love for this dear country of ours, as well as the core principles of, Probity and Accountability, shall be championed by scores of BELIEVERS who are ready to fight the next level of the STRUGGLE.

Thank God that, on January 7, 2021, the NDC MPs evoked the spirit of the Revolution when they sang the Revo, Revo, Revolution, has a long way to go, but has come to stay …, to stand their ground and ensure that the Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, was duly sworn-in as the Speaker of the Eighth Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

It was also extremely exhilarating listening to, Alhaji Hudu Yahaya (flanked by Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the National Chairman and current Leader of the NDC – per the Party’s Constitution, once elections are over and the bid for Presidency does not materialize, the Chairman is Leader till a new Flagbearer is elected), reading the NDC’s tribute at the funeral service, and state categorically that, Jerry Rawlings SHALL forever remain the Founder of the National Democratic Congress.

In other words, NOBODY nor groups shall be allowed to use any backdoor tactics and shenanigans to try and impose anybody on the Party as its Founder just because Jerry John Rawlings is no longer with us in flesh and blood.

I congratulate His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Republic of Ghana for giving the late President Jerry John Rawlings a befitting and dignified funeral and burial service.

Papa J was a great man and I shall miss his human presence.

Sir, your piloting abilities here on earth have been etched in gold: may you land your plane perfectly on the tarmac in the Land of your Ancestors and may the same plane land you safely in the bosom of the Most High.

Chief; Hedenyuie

Full text: Amidu’s tribute to Rawlings [Read] https://www.adomonline.com/full-text-amidus-tribute-to-rawlings-read/ Thu, 28 Jan 2021 17:07:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1911990 I was taken aback on 29th September 2020 when after paying my condolences and expressing my experiential emotions of what a toll the passing of your dear mother could have had on you despite your old age, you told me that: “Chief, it is good it happened now. Chief you people never knew. Two or three years ago I was in bad shape with my health and I feared I would go before her.

“At least I can now see her off.” I thought this was just one of the usual conversations between friends. With hindsight, I now realise that my dear and respected former PNDC Chairman and former President Emeritus Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings was indeed giving us notice of his impending exit from his earthly assignments after the burial of his dear mother and bidding us goodbye.

After the internment of his dear mother on 24th October 2020 he was compelled by affairs of state to truncate his period of rest to hold a series of mediation sessions with me, then the Special Prosecutor, in his Office in Accra on 27th, 28th, and 29th October 2020.

The late former President Emeritus Rawlings adjourned the first session to the next day, the 28th, and promised we would have lunch together. He kept his word and invited us to have lunch with him, adding that: “Chief” referring to me, “If you do not eat this lunch, I have arranged for us I will not be happy”. I reluctantly unmasked and helped myself to lunch with the Great Leader. Others were around for the lunch including his sister Mrs Judy John Nkansah.

With hindsight, was this also in the nature of the last lunch/supper you had arranged in anticipation of your impending ancestral journey? We saw each other in his office briefly the next day, the 29th and he was all hope and assurance that justice and equity for Ghana was going to result from his mediation efforts on the 30th, the next day.

We could not meet in a face-to-face interaction again because contrary to our agreed expectations I had been compelled to execute one of the teachings of our revolutionary struggle – positive defiance without having warned him about my intentions to avoid any breakdown in any prospect of continuing mediation. I was not exhibiting the skills of being good at playing chess, as I am told you surmised, Comrade Rawlings. I was dead serious to be a loyal, faithful, and true revolutionary comrade serving the interest of the ordinary people of this country for whom you led us to render selfless service during our long years together as comrades and brothers.

I heard the news of your admission at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on 4th November 2020. Then on the morning of 12th November 2020 somehow and intuitively, I got apprehensive and tried to find out how well you were doing. The prognosis was not gloomy. Then at 10:15 am I received by telephone the shocking and sad news that Ghanaians were yet to hear, from the United Kingdom, while I was in a scheduled meeting in my then Office. My mobile phones started ringing. “Is what I am hearing about former President Rawlings death true? Is it true….? Is it true…?”. My pretense of appearing self-composed despite the shocking and saddening news of your sudden demise to our ancestors could no longer continue during the meeting. I still cannot believe that you have left us, your comrades, so suddenly and put the whole nation in shock and despair.

The handing over of power by an African leader after two four-year terms under a Constitutional regime in Africa which you accomplished is a notable event in the political history of Ghana and Africa. Not all who have been Presidents or Heads of State have been of equal merit, or of at least equal importance. Presidents or Heads of State, like other men, vary in their importance on their generations and history. Some even in their lifetime never raised a ripple on the surface of politics and whose names are now forgotten by all but students of their period. Comrade Rawlings, you are one of those rare gems of this land who will never pass from the minds of men, but will live in their hearts, so long as Ghana endures because of the great qualities of your life.

His indomitable courage, all pervasive-humanity, and love for freedom for every Ghanaian are the qualities of our Great Leader for two decades as a revolutionary leader, and Constitutionally elected President under the 1992 Constitution he birthed that will forever make him to remain the most famous son of our homeland Ghana. He was the Head of State of four Governments which encompassed members of all the political persuasions of this country who were willing to serve under him and never was the nation’s trust in a man most amply justified. One such man who served under him as a matter of indisputable fact from an opposing political persuasion succeeded him immediately as President of Ghana on 7th January 2001. Historians in the future will analyze his strategy and tactics, and point, no doubt to his mistakes.

But we who lived through those days and served under him have this advantage over the historians of the future: that we can testify to the inspiration we received from his splendid courage, integrity, high moral character, and his matchless charisma and eloquence. In the line of Ghanaian and African statesmen who have graced our political history in my adult life, none has rendered such incomparable service, not only to his country but to the Pan Africanist movement, the African liberation struggle, the African continent, in general, and the world at large. None has striven so mightily in the sincere defence of truth and justice, and none has done more to uphold the standards of our national honour free from greed and corruption. Sure! Jerry John Rawlings was a hard taskmaster, but he was tolerant and magnanimous. He was the sort of man who drew the best out of all his subordinates, each of whom was proud to serve him to the utmost capacity. Even the traitors who once claimed to be his comrades who hurt him most unjustifiably before his demise attest in their traitorous books to his qualities as a statesman and a leader to whom they and the nation owe gratitude.

At this solemn and trying moment of grief and mourning my compassion and sympathy go out to his Consort and widow, the indefatigable former First Lady and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, and co-founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 1992, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who stood by our departed Great Leader, in rain or shine. My heart goes out to that valiant woman, with famous blood of Ashanti royalty in her veins, who sustained the former Chairman and former President through all his travails and problems and brought up with their charm and beauty the three daughters and a son who mourn their Great father to-day. May the Holy Trinity in our Catholic faith grant her and her children strength to bear their sorrow.

We shared the one Catholic faith and at this sad and solemn moment, I cannot find words in which to bid you goodbye till the resurrection. I am only left to say: Lord grant eternal rest to your son, Jerry John, and let perpetual light shine upon him. O Lord hear my prayer and let my cry come to you. May he rest in peace. Amen!

Rawlings Funeral: Victor Gbeho cited for ‘disrespect’ to Anlo tradition [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/rawlings-funeral-victor-gbeho-cited-for-disrespect-to-anlo-tradition-audio/ Thu, 28 Jan 2021 15:38:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1911803 The Anlo Traditional Council has blamed the Chairman of late Rawlings’ Funeral Planning Committee, James Victor Gbeho for failing to do the right thing as far as Anlo tradition was concerned.

Secretary to the Local Funeral Planning Committee, Torgbui Agbotadua Kumasah, who spoke on behalf of the Committee said Mr Gbeho is a kin of Anlo who was expected to know and provide guidance to the state regarding Anlo tradition but he failed to do so.

He said Mr Gbeho’s failure in providing the state with the right guidance meant the people of Anlo could not perform the needed traditional rites prior to the state burial given to Mr Rawlings who was an installed chief of the Anlo land.

READ ALSO:

Torgbui Agbotadua was particularly unhappy with comments Mr Gbeho was alleged to have made to the effect that the late Mr Rawlings was just a ceremonial chief, an assertion he said isn’t accurate.

He explained that the late Mr Rawlings was the advisor to the Awomefia of Anlo State and couldn’t be described as a ceremonial chief.

Torgbui Agbotadua who spoke on Adom 106.3 FM morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Thursday, however, stopped short of blaming government for its role in the happenings, saying it had the duty to perform a state funeral and that it did.

The remains of former president Jerry John Rawlings was laid to rest on January 27, 2021, in Accra amid concerns from the family regarding its role and adequate input.

The family, prior to the burial, had announced plans to hold a traditional funeral with the hope of the body being sent to Anlo, a hope that remained against hope.

But, Torgbe Agbotadua served notice on the show that they were still going to organise a traditional funeral where they will perform the necessary rites as Anlo tradition demanded.

According to her, Mr Rawlings wanted her to organise a highlife concert annually to revive the genre and also sustain her own legacy.

However, the singer-cum-dancer said it was her plan to hold the event every five years, hence did not take the late Statesman’s advice with the seriousness it deserved.

“At my 25th anniversary, he told me to organise such shows every year because they miss the highlife songs and shows but I wanted to wait for my 30th anniversary which was to be last year,” she disclosed in an interview at Mr Rawlings’ funeral.

A 52-year-old woman, claiming to be the first daughter of former President Jerry Rawlings, has expressed sadness about the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Klottey Korle Constituency, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings.

The sadness, according to Abigail Rawlings Mawutor, is borne out of the MP’s alleged refusal to speak to her after she found out the late President was her father.

She disclosed this while speaking exclusively on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Wednesday.

Madam Mawutor, who was prevented from entering the funeral grounds of the late president on Tuesday, said after she realised the truth about her father, she reached out to the MP who has refused to speak to her for the past two years.

She, however, said she was proud of her sister and her achievements.

“I am very proud of Zanetor and very happy for her. It is God’s will she is where she finds herself now and I want her to become a big person and climb to even presidency like our father though she just hasn’t given me the chance to speak to her,” she cried.

Abigail Mawutor Rawlings, a woman who claims to be the first daughter of late ex-President Jerry Rawlings, has revealed why she never got close to him.

According to the 52-year-old woman, she never got to know of who her father was until about 18 years ago.

Though most people have over the years testified of the striking resemblance with the late first President of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, she never had any confirmation from anybody.

Narrating the struggles of her birth on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Mawutor said the identity of her father was finally confirmed on March 2, 2002.

“I really wanted to meet him and just talk with him just for that closure but he never gave the opportunity but always sent people to me and even offered to compensate the new man my mother married,” she narrated.

Though she explained Mr Rawlings always sent people to look for her, she never had the opportunity to meet him face-to-face.

“One Dr Dzokoto, Segbede and Zegbenu were all people he sent to me and though I sent messages through them, they yielded no results and I can’t really tell what the hindrance was,” she said.

Madam Mawutor further noted Mr Rawlings’ family was aware of her existence, a situation she claimed brought division.

It was my wish to lead my father, ex-President Jerry John Rawlings to Christ before his death, says his alleged first daughter, Abigail Mawutor.

Though Mr Rawlings was known to be a Catholic and worshipped at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, Adabraka in Accra, his religious principles and faith were not known publicly.

Speaking exclusively on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem show, Madam Mawutor indicated it was a major thing she wanted to do for the late Statesman.

Sadly, her wish never came to fruition as she never had the opportunity to meet her 73-year-old ‘father’ who died on November 12, 2020.

Abigail Rawlings Mawutor, a 52-year-old woman, claiming to be the first daughter of former President Jerry Rawlings, has sent a strong message to those questioning why she showed up after the latter’s death.

Madam Abigail on Tuesday went viral after she was prevented from entering the funeral grounds of the late president.

In a video circulating on social media, she was sent away by security personnel at the Accra International Conference Centre.

She had earlier told the media that she was the first child of the man who ruled Ghana from 31st December 1981 to December 2000.

Speaking exclusively on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Wednesday, she said those who are criticising her for showing up at this time will face their karma.

“I just don’t understand why people keep asking why I have just showed up. Those people are just mad and will face their own karma one day. Those people will even do more than I am doing if they were to be in my shoes and so they should just shut up,” she lashed out amid tears.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, in response, clapped to welcome the announcement.

Mr Rawlings, while alive, rejected an offer for the university, which he supported to establish, to be named after him, because he had a personal principle of not naming any national monument after him.

But in his tribute, President Akufo-Addo indicated that the family has accepted that the university be named after the late former President.

Anlo Traditional Council breaks silence on Rawlings’ funeral snub [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/anlo-traditional-council-breaks-silence-on-rawlings-funeral-snub-audio/ Wed, 27 Jan 2021 18:51:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1911301 JoyNews/AdomNews · Anlo Traditional Council justifies Rawlings’ funeral snub

The Anlo Traditional Council has revealed they were not properly invited to the funeral of the late ex-President Jerry Rawlings, hence its absence.

According to the Secretary of the local funeral planning committee, they only received a funeral invitation on Monday, January 25, 2021, when activities preceding the burial had begun.

The Secretary, Agbotadua Kumasah, explained there was no need for them to show up since they had been ignored from the beginning of preparations towards the funeral.

“We were expecting to be formally informed by the central planning committee chaired by Ambassador Victor Gbeho but that did not even happen and it was the Anlo District Chief Executive who brought us a letter on Monday,” he said.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Wednesday, he noted they were also exempted from performing any role at the funeral.

“Three representatives from the Traditional Council were appointed to serve on the central committee but were ignored and never invited for any of the meetings on the funeral arrangements and we felt sidelined,” he said.

When asked about a representative at the funeral who laid a wreath on their behalf at the Black Star Square, Mr Kumasah described the person as an outcast.

“We did not send any delegation so nobody was given the authority to do anything on our behalf,” he indicated.

There were 77 attempts on Rawlings’ life – Nana Ato Dadzie reveals https://www.adomonline.com/there-were-77-attempts-on-rawlings-life-nana-ato-dadzie-reveals/ Wed, 27 Jan 2021 18:29:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1911303 A former Chief of Staff during the Rawlings administration, Nana Ato Dadzie, has disclosed that in a space of 10 years there were 77 attempts on the life of the then-President.

He said the military ruler, who returned the country to democratic rule, suffered incessant coups from political opponents to remove him from office.

According to the former Attorney-General, who worked closely with former President Rawlings, the attempted coups and foiled assassination attempts created an atmosphere of insecurity at the Castle.

He told Joy News’ Latif Iddrisu that the situation left Mr Rawlings with no option than to distance himself from his wife and children to insulate them.

“It was a difficult time for us especially in the first 10 years as the politics then was so fierce. People simply wanted to remove Rawlings from power. There were over 77 attempts to eliminate him,’’ he said.

The United Nations Consultant on Peacebuilding and Political Transition, added: “You can understand what this will mean for his family. He literally didn’t have a family and I sympathised with his wife and children at the time.

“We were at the centre of major attacks at the Castle and we suffered for it,’’ he said.

He also recounted how they worked for three years without salary and had to survive on coffee over the period because there was no food.

We will pacify Rawlings’ soul – Anlo chief [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/we-will-pacify-rawlings-soul-anlo-chief-audio/ Wed, 27 Jan 2021 18:17:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1911277

The Anlo Traditional area is not perturbed about the burial of late former President Jerry John Rawlings by the State.

They maintained that, as a chief, they need to pacify his soul to avert any wrath from their ancestors.

Secretary to the local funeral planning committee of Anlo Traditional area, Agbotadua Kumasah, disclosed this in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday.

“We don’t want repercussion to befall any of us so we will perform the funeral, pacify his [Rawlings] soul and plead to our ancestors to give him safe passage,” he noted.

He noted that the absence of the former President’s body will not affect the funeral because in Anlo history, they have had precedent of holding a chief’s funeral without the body.

“We have had some chiefs who were captured in war. We have had chiefs who drowned and the bodies were not recovered. We had chiefs who were burnt to ashes and chiefs who were lost who we didn’t know whether they were alive or not,” he explained.

He was, however, happy about how the military took charge and gave the former President a befitting burial.

“The funeral was beautiful, immaculately and efficiently organised; I doff my hat to our military men,” he said.

Meanwhile, a burial service was held for late former President Rawlings at the Black Star Square and he was buried at the military cemetery on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, in Accra.

The name she said was Abigail Amehem but she was forced to change it quickly to Abigail Mawutor Rawlings.

Rawlings’ Snr Aide Kobina Andoh’s tribute will fill your eyes with tears https://www.adomonline.com/rawlings-snr-aide-kobina-andohs-tribute-will-fill-your-eyes-with-tears/ Wed, 27 Jan 2021 16:07:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1911244 One hot afternoon in 1979, I was scurrying home as a seven-year-old from school when I heard a flurry of activity near the Regional Administration in Sunyani.

A large excited crowd was gathered and ever-curious, I got to know that the new military Head of State, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings, was soon to arrive to address the expectant audience.

I located a mound of sand and positioned myself at a safe distance.

Soon enough a convoy of Ghana Army Pinzguaer utility vehicles appeared at top speed and before the vehicles could come to a halt, the door to the first vehicle opened and a lanky looking Jerry Rawlings jumped out and clambered onto the top of the vehicle the moment it came to a halt.

I understood little of what Chairman Rawlings said. I was enamoured by his charisma and the overjoyed crowd who kept chanting his name as he addressed them.

That was my first encounter with JJ and he left a lasting impression.

For decades after that I only saw him on television. I was eager to watch state events such as the Independence day parades where, upon arrival with his ever colourful wife, he would shimmy and get his clothes in order while waiting for Naa..Naa to walk around the vehicle and accompany him on the Presidential walk.

Jerry John Rawlings was a showman and I lapped it up like an excited Labrador.

I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would ever work for or come close to one of the most striking personalities Ghana has produced.

But out of the blue, in 2008, I was introduced to President Rawlings and asked to assist with a project on a temporary basis.

I was certainly overawed by his presence even though he treated me as an equal and always referred to me as “Chief”.

His tall, confident posturing and the thumping of his boots on the wooden floor were frankly intimidating, but over time I came to realize that JJ was a simple, jovial and generous personality who had few airs about him.

Though he still had the authoritative military cloak all around him, he was accessible and easy to communicate with.

One of the most uncomfortable situations he placed me in was to invite me to lunch or dinner at his residence almost every day.

With Madam (Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings) and their adult kids present, I found this so uncomfortable.

Disarmingly he would insist that some particular dish was so tasty I should try it, and matters were not helped when Mrs. Rawlings offered, without waiting for a response, to serve me.

The long and short of the matter was that sooner rather than later my response to every meal invitation was, “I have already eaten, Mr. President.” The invitations eventually tapered off when it became obvious poor Kobina was intimidated by the meal invitations.

Jerry Rawlings had the most unassuming personality and never fell prey to the trappings of his position as former President.

I travelled with him extensively and he would always insist I have a copy of his hotel room key so that in the mornings, when we had official engagements, I could let myself into his room and wake him up. Sometimes when it was difficult to wake him by calling, I would pinch his toes which would then elicit a few fake snores before he would eventually open his eyes and ask me how much time we had.

kobina andoh amoakwa

My memories of our departed boss, friend, former President and statesman cannot be squeezed into one short tribute. He impacted on me in so many ways.

Confident and not hesitant to speak his mind; human and sometimes very temperamental, President Rawlings had the humility to say sorry when he thought he was wrong – a lesson that will always serve as a guide in all I do.

On at least two occasions when he had snapped at me, he either called or sent a message to express his apologies.

Those times were very unnerving for me but that was who he was. Stubborn sometimes, but sensitive to the people around him and his surroundings.

Rest in peace, Mr. President. You came, you saw, you conquered. You impacted on this world more than you could ever imagine.

Many across the world were overawed by your presence and by the principles you stood for and stoutly defended.

Your demise has left a huge vacuum in all of us. Its suddenness hurts even more. We know you are at peace and pray for your eternal rest!

President Nana Akufo-Addo has shared his fondest memory of late President Jerry John Rawlings in a tribute during his funeral service.

According to President Akufo-Addo, during the burial of Mr Rawlings’s mother, Victoria Agbortui, Mr Rawlings asked the clergy to hold on and invited him to join him in prayers.

“There was a symbolic gesture he advanced to me at the funeral of his late mother, Madam Victoria Agbotui, held at the Forecourt of the State House on 24th October 2020. It was to be our last time together. He was called up by the clergy to receive special prayers as the only surviving son. He told the men of God to wait and called for me to walk up to join him to receive the special prayers. He whispered into my ears as I stood beside him: ‘I reminded them that they should pray for you also because you had also lost your mother.’ I was touched by this,” he said.

FULL TEXT: President Akufo-Addo’s tribute to J.J. Rawlings https://www.adomonline.com/full-text-president-akufo-addos-tribute-to-j-j-rawlings/ Wed, 27 Jan 2021 14:14:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1911050 Farewell, “Comandante”

He burst onto the scene like a meteor, but a meteor that did not burst into flames and disintegrate like all meteors do. On the contrary, it remained potent until the very end of its life, leaving strong footprints in the sands of time.

The turbulent occurrences of the 1970s in Ghana – the overthrow of the 2nd Republic and the Progress Party Government by the military coup of 13th January 1972; the takeover of power by the Col. I.K. Acheampong-led National Redemption Council and, subsequently, the Supreme Military Council; the proscription of multiparty democracy; the professionals’ strike of 1976; the March 1978 Referendum on the proposal to entrench military rule through the Union Government concept; the formation of the People’s Movement for Freedom and Justice (PMFJ) to mobilise the ‘No Vote’ in the Referendum; the consequences of the vote, and the conspiracy to abduct the Electoral Commissioner; the palace coup that removed Gen. Kutu Acheampong from office and ushered in Gen. Fred Akuffo in his stead – culminated in the emergence of Flt. Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings in the political space of our country.

Charismatic, energetic, fearless leader. Such were the attributes ascribed by many Ghanaians to the man, Jerry John Rawlings, the young air force officer, who announced his presence in Ghana’s politics by the abortive coup of May 15, 1979, and was sentenced to death for his part in the failed effort. He gave, at his trial, an important insight into his character, when he stood up, before the military tribunal, to accept sole responsibility for the attempt, and to request the NCOs, who were being tried with him, to be absolved and freed by the tribunal.

The great events that were to define his career followed quickly after his trial, conviction and sentence. Three (3) weeks later, whilst awaiting execution of his sentence, he was dramatically freed from prison by the insurgents of what has come to be known as the June 4th Uprising, when junior officers and other ranks of the Ghana Armed Forces banded together to throw out the Supreme Military Council, and install the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), headed by Flt. Lt Jerry John Rawlings, thereafter ‘J.J’ to all and sundry in Ghana. It is no wonder that he came to regard June 4th as “that divine day”.

He re-emerged as Chairman of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), when he led the successful coup that brought the short-lived 3rd Republic to an end on 31st December 1981. The tumultuous, and at times lawless, incidents of the AFRC’s three (3) month tenure of office, and of the early years of PNDC rule, are matters of record, winning him passionate admirers, vociferous critics, and determined lifelong enemies, all at the same time.

He was the longest serving ruler in our history – eleven (11) years as a military leader, and eight (8) years as a twice elected civilian President, making nineteen (19) years in all. He was fortified in his work by his union with his celebrated consort, the equally dynamic Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, who proved to be a sturdy pillar and invaluable companion to the very end, and who bore him four (4) children, the eldest of whom, Zanetor, is continuing his tradition of public service.

It was no secret that the relationship that existed between the two of us, right from the heady days of 1979, through to my brief period in exile, his assumption of office as the 1st President of the 4th Republic, the historic Kume Preko demonstrations, my period as Attorney General and Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Kufuor administration, to my being elected 2008 NPP presidential candidate, was one of open animosity. We did not see eye to eye!!

However, with time, things changed. We came to see value in each other, and understood, to a very large degree, our respective perspectives. One thing we had in common was our mutual commitment to public service.

My visit to his Ridge residence in 2012 signified the easing of tensions between us, leading to a friendship that lasted for the better part of some eight (8) years. Indeed, when the Ghanaian people, in 2016, reposed, for the first time, their confidence in me in the elections of that year, one of the first persons on whom I paid a courtesy call was His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings.

From my entry into office, right up to the day he was called by his Maker, he remained a good friend and a repository of sound advice. I knew that, in moments of difficulty in my presidency, I could count on his considerable wealth of experience and knowledge. On those occasions, he came through for me.

There was a symbolic gesture he advanced to me at the funeral of his late mother, Madam Victoria Agbotui, held at the Forecourt of the State House on 24th October 2020. It was to be our last time together. He was called up by the clergy to receive special prayers as the only surviving son. He told the men of God to wait and called for me to walk up to join him to receive the special prayers. He whispered to my ears as I stood beside him: “I reminded them that they should pray for you also because you had also lost your mother.” I was touched by this.

It is for good reason that his well-known, oft-cited ideals of “probity and accountability”, in which he invested a great deal of his political capital, have been enshrined in the Constitution of the 4th Republic, and, together with “Freedom and Justice”, the words of our nation’s motto, constitute the foundational principles on which social order is to be developed in Ghana.

There are many who acknowledge him as the Founder of the 4th Republic, a Republic which has proved to be the most enduring and stable in our history, and which has witnessed eight (8) successive elections, three peaceful changes of government from one party to another, and five Presidents. For all his revolutionary antecedents, he set, in 2001, the enviable precedent, which has, since, guided our country, of respecting the two-term limit of the Presidency and superintending the orderly transfer of power to his democratically-elected successor.

Whilst he was with us, he, respectfully, declined an offer I made to him, in 2017, to have the University of Development Studies, Tamale, (UDS), which he, personally, helped establish, named after him. His reason was that, in adhering to a long-standing principle, he did not want to have any national monument or facility named after him. Two days after his passing, at the 21st Congregation of UDS, I expressed my strongest convictions, in spite of his reservations, that such an honour should be accorded him. I am glad that this has found favour with his family, and the necessary formalities will be carried out to achieve this, i.e. The Jerry John Rawlings University of Development Studies, Tamale.

Such is the measure of the man that the days associated with his political interventions in Ghana, i.e. 15th May, 4th June, 31st December, and 7th January, are now significant days in the calendar of the nation. But, the most significant of them all must be 7th January 1993, the day that ushered in the 4th Republic. It is in recognition of this that I decided to commemorate 7th January as Constitution Day on the national calendar. It is, perhaps, the greatest tribute a grateful nation can offer to the men and women whose efforts led to the establishment of the 4th Republic. It is my hope and prayer that he remains, forever, the longest-serving Head of State in our nation’s history, for that would mean that the 4th Republican Constitution and its enshrined term limits have endured.

His actions were not limited to Ghana only. The African nationalist that he was, he held unwavering positions on all matters concerning the wider continent of Africa, especially when they involved foreign interference and control of Africa’s destiny, and was quick to voice his views on them.

His chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government set the example, whereby virtually all his successors, John Agyekum Kufuor, John Dramani Mahama, and I, the 2nd, 4th and 5th Presidents, respectively, of the 4th Republic, have been honoured by their peers with the occupancy of that high office, reinforcing the pan-African vocation which has been an essential element of Ghanaian public policy since independence.

I called him ‘Comandante’, because of his admiration for the famous Latin American revolutionaries, Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, and Daniel Ortega, a nickname which seemed to please him.

I believe that history, on balance, will be kind to him, and will render a positive verdict on his contribution to the evolution of our nation, and the entrenchment of its democratic institutions and culture. It is entirely appropriate and fitting that he should receive a State Funeral with full honours to express the gratitude of the nation for that contribution.

My wife Rebecca and our children join me in expressing our sincere, heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife, Nana Konadu, his children, Ezanetor, Yaa Asantewa, Amina, and Kimathi, and his entire family, for their great loss of one of the outstanding figures of modern Ghanaian history, a man whose sense of humour was truly infectious.

‘Comandante’, rest and abide in perfect peace in the bosom of the Almighty, until we all meet again on the last day of the Resurrection.

Farewell, God bless, and thank you for all your help.

Check out meaning of names of Rawlings’ four children https://www.adomonline.com/check-out-meaning-of-names-of-rawlings-four-children/ Wed, 27 Jan 2021 13:49:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1911002 A name is indeed much more than just a name but hidden within is a special meaning which makes Zanetor Rawlings convinced about the choice of names from her father.

Reading the tribute on behalf of her siblings to their late father, ex-President Jerry John Rawlings, the Klottey Korley lawmaker was optimistic they have lived to fulfill the meaning of their names.

She took time to state the meaning of each name.

“You were a warrior and with each of us you took pulse to name because resonating within you was an organic understanding of a name’s sacred soul.

“You did not name any of us without you ensuring that we will discover our own purpose in our name sacred soul. A warrior’s label was thus your gift and in each name laid your challenge to us to be watchers, protectors of creation, keepers, seekers of universal knowledge, to be courageous and never to stay faulted, to seek our purpose and remain true to it,” she eulogised.

Beginning with herself as the first child of the family, she noted Zanetor was an extractive and command name, meaning the darkness must seize.

This, she explained, was her name given to her at a difficult time in Ghana when the then president was hoping economic hardship and corruption would seize.

“Your second child, Yaa Asantewaa of Ashanti extraction in modern day Ghana; you named her after Nana Yaa Asantewaa of Ejisu, a queen mother who led her people to war against the British colonial rulers after the king of Ashanti kingdom was exiled,” she stated.

Amina and Kimathi, she said, were from Arabic and Kenya extraction respectively.

“You named your third child Amina after the queen of Zaria, modern-day Nigeria, the first woman to become a ruler in a male-dominated society.

“Kimathi of Kikuyu extract of Kenya you named him after Dedan Kimathi, a military inspiring leader who led his people in several uprisings that led up to the independence struggle against the British colonial rulers,” she narrated.

In view of this, she stressed their names epitomise Mr Rawlings’ already ‘conquest beliefs and pan Africanism.’
