Ablekuma North: High Court orders collation of 62 polling station results before declaration https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-high-court-orders-collation-of-62-polling-station-results-before-declaration/ Sat, 04 Jan 2025 15:49:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490084 The High Court in Accra has granted the application of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seeking to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to re-collate outstanding constituency results in the Ablekuma North Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

The Court is delivering its ruling on the NPP’s mandamus application concerning the four constituencies of Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, Techiman South, and Ablekuma North.

In the case of Ablekuma North, Justice Forson Agyapong of the Accra High Court General Jurisdiction 2 said the EC declared 219 polling stations out of 281, leaving 62 polling station results outstanding.

He said there was evidence of a demand on the EC to act, but it failed or refused to do so.

He thus ordered the Commission to collate the results from the 62 outstanding polling stations, add the same to the already collated results, and declare the winner.

The Judge also ordered the IGP to provide adequate and armed security to the EC to conduct the collation exercise.

Before the Ablekuma North ruling, the High Court judge granted a similar application of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seeking to compel the Electoral Commission to collate constituency results for the Tema Central Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

In the case of Tema Central, Justice Forson Agyapong of the Accra High Court General Jurisdiction 2 said the EC did not collate the results from all the polling stations in the constituency before a winner was declared.

It also stated that the person who did the declaration of the winner was not the returning officer as mandated under the electoral laws.

The Judge also said there was evidence of demand on the EC and evidence that the EC had refused to act. The judge thus ordered the Electoral Commission to collate the results of the two outstanding polling stations and add the same to the already collated results.

The court also ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to provide adequate security for the EC to act.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also urged anyone with information about the cause of the fire to come forward, emphasizing, “If you know who did that, and you keep it to yourself, you have done no good. The government must deal with them.”

The traders hailed her compassion and presence, expressing hope for relief and justice in the wake of the tragedy.

The fire, which reportedly began late Thursday night, has been attributed to either an electrical fault or arson.

Investigations are ongoing as calls for accountability intensify.

Parliament schedules January 7 midnight meeting for election of Speaker and deputies https://www.adomonline.com/parliament-schedules-january-7-midnight-meeting-for-election-of-speaker-and-deputies/ Sat, 04 Jan 2025 13:05:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490059 The Acting Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, has announced that Parliament will hold its first sitting of the Ninth Parliament under the Fourth Republic on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.

The session, scheduled for 12:05 a.m. at Parliament House in Accra, will focus on the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers. The administration of oaths to the Speaker and Members of Parliament will also take place during this inaugural sitting.

The announcement, made through an official notice from the Parliamentary Service, read:

“KNOW YE ALL MEN that in the exercise of the Powers conferred on the Clerk to Parliament, I, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Acting Clerk to Parliament, appointed under Article 124 of the Constitution and pursuant to Order 8(2) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, do hereby appoint Parliament House, Accra, to be the place and five minutes past twelve midnight (12:05 a.m.) of Tuesday, the 7th day of January, 2025 to be the time when Parliament shall sit to elect a Speaker and Deputy Speakers and for the administration of Oaths to the Speaker and Members of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.”

As Parliament prepares for this pivotal event, debate has intensified over whether the incoming administration led by President-elect John Dramani Mahama will retain the current Speaker, Alban Bagbin, or opt for a new candidate.

The Majority Leader of the eighth Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has argued for the next Speaker to be an elected Member of Parliament (MP), highlighting the importance of parliamentary expertise. Speaking on the matter, he stated: “Mr Speaker, if they sack you,

Mr Speaker, of all that you have done for them, they are going to sack you. If they decide to retain you, the happiness of this House will gather further momentum.

“However, if the new government decides to bring a new Speaker, that Speaker should come from within. We don’t want an outsider. We want somebody from within who would understand us.”

This first sitting is expected to set the stage for the legislative direction of the Ninth Parliament, as Ghana’s political leadership embarks on a new chapter under the Mahama administration.

Why Ghana should consider changing its election date – Bullgod shares perspective https://www.adomonline.com/why-ghana-should-consider-changing-its-election-date-bullgod-shares-perspective/ Sat, 04 Jan 2025 12:55:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490057 Artiste manager and entertainment pundit, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, also called Bullgod, has suggested to the Electoral Commission to consider shifting the date for elections from December.

While speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show, he said the exercise affects creative events and investments throughout the festive period because the majority of the diaspora fears visiting due to potential violence.

Unlike in any other year, most event organizers put in effort to hold events after the elections but end up recording lower attendance, causing them to run at a loss.

“I think one of the things we need to consider is shifting the date for elections. There was a rumour somewhere last year that they were going to put it in November. So I think we can do November like the Americas or even do it before that. What stops us? It’s just a day. The reason being that it affects investment. There’s a lot of money that comes in during that time.”

Whether it would affect the transition process, the pundit said that amendments to the constitution could be made to guide the procedure and set a different date for the changeover to the new government.

He added that Ghana cannot continue to be stuck in old ways, emphasizing that the traditional way of doing things has changed and that politics needs to be adjusted to keep up with the changes.

“For me, the constant things in life have changed. We can’t be stuck in our ways unless they look at the revenue December brings to us and say it’s negligible because that timing is some way.”

As a result, Bullgod is calling on stakeholders and industry players to advocate for this, suggesting that the date be moved to either the middle of the year or November.

Edem Mensah-Tsortome, an entertainment pundit who was also contributing to the show, concurred with Bullgod, reiterating that some people who were in the country before the elections were contemplating ttravelling abroad due to the fear of conflicts and chaos.

This could have caused massive losses to the entertainment industry and event organizers, including musicians, because they could have seen a drastic decline in numbers.

“Even us who were here, it’s like we don’t know what will happen. We were uneasy in a way,” he added.

He pleaded that if there could be a way to amend the decision, the stakeholders in charge should rethink and consider the change.

Akufo-Addo’s performance is below zero – Amakye-Boateng says https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addos-performance-is-below-zero-amakye-boateng-says/ Sat, 04 Jan 2025 12:43:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490053 Political scientist and lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Amakye-Boateng, has rated the outgoing President, Nana Akufo-Addo’s performance as “below zero”.

He says the president has not demonstrated enough competence to gain public trust in governance and democracy. As a result, he rates his tenure as poor over the years he has served as president.

“Seriously, it’s very difficult to assess this government. Almost everything was a failure, including the Free SHS programme. They didn’t mean it, which is why the graduates didn’t vote for Dr Bawumia. How can you rate this government? It’s below zero,” he said.

Dr Amakye-Boateng also criticised the issue of illegal mining (galamsey), blaming Akufo-Addo’s administration for failing to take adequate action to address it.

“Why did we allow galamsey to reach the level it has? How could we do this to ourselves? Our forefathers, many years ago, had reasons to preserve the forests, yet today, those of us who consider ourselves enlightened are doing this? And you want us to rate this government? It’s below zero,” he added.

Dr Amakye-Boateng was speaking on Joy News AM Show with Sweety Aboache ahead of the president’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA), which he is expected to deliver today, Friday, January 3.

He believes that although the president has made many speeches over the years, he has failed to create the impression that he has all the answers to Ghana’s problems.

Dr Amakye-Boateng emphasised that the performance of the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is nothing to be proud of.

President Akufo-Addo served as president for eight years, from 2017 to 2024. Despite his visionary ideas to address the nation’s issues, such as tackling unemployment, reducing the high cost of living, and making education free and accessible, many Ghanaians appear dissatisfied with his leadership.

Meanwhile, the president will deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) at Parliament House on Friday. Afterward, the current 8th Parliament is expected to be dissolved to make way for the commencement of the 9th Parliament.

EOCO freezes Prestea-Bogoso Mine acquisition process amid fraud investigation https://www.adomonline.com/eoco-freezes-prestea-bogoso-mine-acquisition-process-amid-fraud-investigation/ Sat, 04 Jan 2025 12:40:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490051 The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has frozen the acquisition process of the Prestea-Bogoso Mine by Heath Goldfields Limited, citing ongoing investigations into alleged fraudulent activities surrounding the transaction.

In a letter dated 23rd December 2024, EOCO requested the Minerals Commission to produce documents and provide information related to the registration process of the acquisition.

EOCO specifically asked for details concerning the acquisition by Heath Goldfields Limited and any other documents related to the mine’s transfer.

The investigation, initiated by EOCO, seeks to uncover the veracity of the acquisition and whether it was carried out through fraudulent means.

As part of its investigation, EOCO has requested the cooperation of the Minerals Commission, asking officials to report to the Executive Director of the office or their representative to provide the necessary documents and information.

In accordance with Section 33 of the Economic and Organised Crime Act, 2010 (Act 804), EOCO has imposed a freeze on the acquisition process, halting further transactions between the companies involved until the investigation is concluded.

This action follows concerns regarding the legitimacy of the acquisition of the Prestea-Bogoso Mine, a significant asset in Ghana’s mining sector.

The Executive Director of EOCO, Mrs. Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, who signed the directive also requested immediate compliance from the Minerals Commission, emphasising the importance of resolving the issue promptly.

The freezing of the acquisition process comes after the current managers of the mine, Blue Gold Bogoso Prestea Limited, raised red flags over the process, alleging it was being yanked off the business for no apparent reason.

Akufo-Addo commissioned 47 hospitals outside Agenda 111 initiative – Fatimatu Abubakar https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-commissioned-47-hospitals-outside-agenda-111-initiative-fatimatu-abubakar/ Sat, 04 Jan 2025 12:37:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490049 Minister for Information and Spokesperson for the Government Transition Team, Fatimatu Abubakar, has stated that Ghana’s health sector has seen significant improvements under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

According to her, the government’s approach to improving the health sector has been holistic and comprehensive.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 4, she highlighted that since President Akufo-Addo assumed office in 2017, he has “commissioned at least 47 hospitals” outside the scope of the Agenda 111 project.

Fatimatu Abubakar further noted that in the last two months alone, the President had commissioned about 10 hospitals, in addition to others initiated by the government—all of which were separate from the Agenda 111 initiative.

She explained that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the government discovered that 87 districts lacked district hospitals and appropriate referral points.

“In the Upper East and Volta regions, for example, eight districts had no district hospitals,” she said.

She also pointed out that the newly created regions had no regional hospitals, while some existing hospitals, such as those in Koforidua in the Eastern Region and parts of the Western Region, were in poor condition.

Fatimatu Abubakar cited the introduction of the medical drone delivery system as another significant improvement, particularly for rural areas lacking access to medical supplies.

“I believe for those in the villages who would have died but for a shot of anti-venom, or a pint of blood, they would appreciate some of these interventions,” she stated.

None of Akufo-Addo’s Agenda 111 hospitals functioning – Omane Boamah https://www.adomonline.com/none-of-akufo-addos-agenda-111-hospitals-functioning-omane-boamah/ Sat, 04 Jan 2025 12:31:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490034 Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has criticised the status of the Agenda 111 hospital projects initiated under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, 4th January 2025, Dr Boamah stated that none of the hospitals are currently functional, despite significant resources being allocated to the initiative.

He also highlighted the need for an estimated $1.4 billion to complete the projects.

Dr Boamah’s remarks followed President Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA), delivered on Friday, 3rd January, 2025, in which the President underscored the transformative potential of the Agenda 111 initiative, describing it as a cornerstone of Ghana’s healthcare development.

Launched during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the programme aimed to construct 111 district and regional hospitals, including psychiatric facilities, to address critical gaps in the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

While some progress has been made, the projects remain unfinished as President Akufo-Addo’s tenure ends in barely three days.

President Akufo-Addo has urged President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritise completing the Agenda 111 projects.

The outgoing President expressed optimism that the initiative would significantly enhance healthcare delivery across Ghana if fully realised.

However, Dr Boamah argued that the lack of operational facilities under the initiative highlights deficiencies in planning and execution during Akufo-Addo’s administration.

“None of the Agenda 111 hospitals is functioning. Uncompleted! US$1.4billion needed to complete.”

The Agenda 111 programme, while ambitious, has faced challenges ranging from funding shortfalls to delays in construction.

Deputy Majority Leader Patricia Appiagyei, addressing a press conference, condemned what she described as coordinated attacks by alleged NDC thugs on NPP appointees and supporters following the 2024 general election.

She accused Kofi Totobi Quakyi and Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo Lartey of orchestrating the violence and warned of further disruptions planned for after President-Elect John Dramani Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony.

Despite NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conceding defeat just 14 hours after the polls closed, Appiagyei noted, “The violence has persisted, and it is imperative that the President-Elect and security agencies act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh added that if the alleged attacks continue, the NPP would pursue all available legal means to protect its members.

The MPs urged the President-Elect to ensure calm and called on security agencies to address the situation promptly to maintain peace during the transition period.

Notably, Akufo-Addo touched on the remarkable improvements in WASSCE attributing the success to the free SHS policy.

He pointed out that since the first cohort of Free SHS students sat for the WASSCE in 2020, Ghana has consistently recorded over 50% of candidates scoring A1–C6 in all four core subjects.

The address precedes the handing over of power and the swearing-in of President-elect, John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, January 7.

I knew fighting galamsey wasn’t a popular position to take – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/i-knew-fighting-galamsey-wasnt-a-popular-position-to-take-akufo-addo/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 14:16:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489839 President Nana Akufo-Addo has acknowledged the challenges his administration has faced in its effort to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the country.

According to him, he was aware that fighting galamsey was not a popular position for a president to take, and achieving success in this area would not be easy.

He made these remarks in Parliament on Friday, January 3, during his final State of the Nation Address.

The President referred to his inaugural speech on January 7, 2017, when he made a public commitment to tackle galamsey, which had devastated Ghana’s environment and destroyed lands and water bodies in the pursuit of gold mining.

He explained that he knew the promise he was making to tackle galamsey and the vow to put his presidency on the line would not be an easy feat.

“I knew, and was very much aware, that fighting galamsey was not a universally popular position for a president to take,” he said.

“But I felt strongly enough about the need to protect our environment to say I was prepared to put my presidency on the line in defense of our lands and water bodies.”

President Akufo-Addo further stated that the fight against galamsey directly contributed to the loss of several parliamentary seats in the 2020 elections by his party members.

According to him, this led to the formation of the hung eighth parliament, which affected the implementation of his policy agenda and impacted the second term of his presidency.

The President welcomed the many newfound advocates for the fight against galamsey who emerged in the lead-up to the 2024 elections and expressed hope that more people would come to embrace the need to protect the country’s lands and water bodies.

President Akufo-Addo added that the fight against galamsey is not a battle against mining or the extraction of the gold that God has so generously endowed Ghana with.

“But we owe it to future generations of Ghanaians to extract our minerals in a manner that protects our lands and water bodies,” he stated.

He expressed pride in his government’s ability to implement some of the boldest and most progressive policies in the mining, forestry, and land sectors.

He noted that this progress has led to Ghana surpassing South Africa as the leading gold producer on the continent, with the country consistently increasing gold production to reach an unprecedented 4 million ounces last year.

Ghanaians have already given verdict on true state of the nation – Armah Kofi-Buah https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaians-have-already-given-verdict-on-true-state-of-the-nation-armah-kofi-buah/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 14:13:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489835 Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ellembele constituency, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, says Ghanaians have already delivered a verdict on the true state of the country.

He made these remarks on the floor of Parliament shortly after President Akufo-Addo’s last State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Friday, January 3.

“The people of Ghana have already given their verdict on the true state of the country, and that verdict was very, very clear: economic hardship, huge debt, high youth unemployment, hopelessness, and more. We have come to the end of the road under what has undoubtedly been the worst government in the Fourth Republic,” he said.

The MP, who also serves as the Deputy Minority Leader in the current 8th Parliament, explained, “This abysmal record was confirmed on December 7th when the people of Ghana delivered the most overwhelming and emphatic vote of rejection any government has ever witnessed in the Fourth Republic.”

He further criticized the president for reckless borrowing and mismanagement of state funds, particularly regarding the controversial National Cathedral project.

“Mr President, you will be remembered as the first president who was cushioned by the IMF when you began, and youare still being cushioned at the end of your term. You left something very important in your account – you left out an account of your promise to God to build a cathedral. But, Mr President, I will leave that between you and your God,” he added.

In his address, President Akufo-Addo outlined the various intervention programmes, policies, and steps he has taken over the past eight years to move the country forward. He also expressed hope that the economy is doing well and prayed that the next government continues along the same track to maintain progress.

However, Mr Armah Kofi-Buah further mocked the outgoing president, saying, “Let me remind His Excellency that his tenure in office will remain a timely reminder of how not to govern a country.”

The lawmaker assured the people of Ghana that hope is on the way, urging confidence in the incoming leadership of President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC.

“But let me also be quick to assure the good people of Ghana that hope is on its way. With President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC, we can once again have a brighter future, emerging from this glare of despair,” he concluded.

2023 WASSCE results stand out as best in history – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/2023-wassce-results-stand-out-as-best-in-history-akufo-addo/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 13:42:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489822 President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has hailed the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results as the best in the history of the exams in Ghana.

Speaking during his final State of the Nation Address in Parliament, the president highlighted the historic achievements of Ghanaian students, crediting the success to his government’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy and education reforms.

“The 2023 WASSCE results stand out as the best in the history of the examination. Our reforms have not only expanded access but also enhanced the quality of education,” the President stated.

President Akufo-Addo noted that the introduction of Free SHS in 2017 transformed Ghana’s education system by making secondary education accessible to millions of students who would otherwise have been excluded due to financial constraints.

He emphasised that the policy had dismantled the perception that secondary education was a privilege reserved for a select few.

Highlighting the remarkable improvements in student performance, he pointed out that since the first cohort of Free SHS students sat for the WASSCE in 2020, Ghana has consistently recorded over 50% of candidates achieving A1–C6 in all four core subjects.

In English, pass rates rose from 51.6% in 2016 to 69.52% in 2024. Integrated Science improved from 48.35% in 2016 to 58.77% in 2024, while Mathematics experienced a significant leap from 33.12% in 2016 to 66.86% in 2024. Social Studies also showed steady progress, increasing from 54.5% in 2016 to 71.53% in 2024.

“These results mark a sharp improvement compared to the years prior, particularly when pass rates in core subjects were largely below 50%,” the president said.

President Akufo-Addo expressed pride in his administration’s bold decision to implement Free SHS fully, despite calls for a gradual rollout. He stated that the policy’s success had reaffirmed its value and cemented its place as a transformational milestone in Ghana’s education system.

As he prepares to leave office, the president expressed optimism that the reforms in secondary education, coupled with investments in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and STEM, would continue to improve the quality of education and equip Ghanaian youth with the skills needed for the future.

Free SHS: 5.7 million students get access to education – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/free-shs-5-7-million-students-get-access-to-education-akufo-addo/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 12:57:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489780 President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced that 5.7 million young Ghanaians have benefitted from the Free Senior High School (SHS) and Free Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs since their inception.

In his 2024 State of the Nation Address, he described the initiatives as transformative for education in Ghana.

The president stated that many of these students would not have had access to secondary education without these programs.

To further enhance technical and vocational education, 34 new TVET institutions have been established, and 62 existing ones have been upgraded to equip students with 21st-century skills.

Akufo-Addo reflected on the bold decision to implement Free SHS during his first term, despite calls for a gradual rollout.

From 2020, the first batch of Free SHS beneficiaries began sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

He highlighted a marked improvement in results, with 65% of candidates achieving grades between A1 and C6 in all four core subjects, a significant increase compared to previous years.

He credited the program with producing the best examination results in Ghana’s history, even amidst challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the president, these achievements is a testament to the successful implementation of Free SHS and TVET, which continue to provide educational opportunities and improve academic outcomes nationwide.

I pray Mahama will complete Agenda 111 initiative – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/i-pray-mahama-will-complete-agenda-111-initiative-akufo-addo/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 12:56:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489814 The outgoing president, Nana Akufo-Addo, has expressed his hope that John Mahama’s incoming administration will prioritize the Agenda 111 projects.

He stated that, over the years, he has worked diligently to build a reliable health system in the country, with one of his key initiatives being the Agenda 111 hospitals, which are currently under construction across the nation.

“The most important intervention is the Agenda 111 project that we have embarked upon. I am hoping that the incoming Mahama administration will ensure that the project is completed, so we can have our health infrastructure in a sound state,” he said.

According to Akufo-Addo, out of the 111 hospitals and two proposed psychiatric hospitals under the initiative, three have already been commissioned. He added that the remaining projects are at various stages of development.

Delivering his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) at Parliament on Friday, January 3, the president expressed optimism that the projects will be completed in due course.

The Agenda 111 hospitals are part of an initiative by the Akufo-Addo government to construct healthcare facilities in 90 districts across the country.

The aim is to improve the country’s healthcare sector, especially in districts that lack major health facilities. However, some of the projects in certain districts are still at the foundation stage.

The initiative has cost the state millions of dollars, and the government recently announced that additional funds is needed to continue the construction.

2024 SONA: I was prepared to put my presidency on the line – Akufo-Addo on galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/2024-sona-i-was-prepared-to-put-my-presidency-on-the-line-akufo-addo-on-galamsey/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 12:22:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489772 President Nana Akufo-Addo has described the fight against illegal mining as one of the most challenging undertakings of his presidency.

Addressing parliament during the 2024 State of the Nation Address, he outlined the sacrifices and achievements tied to the campaign, adding that he almost out his presidency on the line.

The president said tackling galamsey was a priority from the onset of his administration due to its devastating impact on the environment and water bodies.

However, the decision came at a significant political cost, with many of his party’s parliamentary candidates losing their seats in the 2020 elections.

The challenge persisted into his second term as the government continued to enforce measures against illegal mining activities.

“I made a commitment to tackle galamsey, a phenomenon which has been ravaging our environment and destroying our lands. I knew it was not going to be easy, but I felt strong enough on the need to protect our environment and was prepared to put my presidency on the line to defend lives and water bodies.”

Despite the challenges, the campaign led to notable successes in the mining sector. Ghana became the leading gold producer in Africa, recording 4 million ounces of gold production in 2023.

Other achievements include the construction of a 400kg-capacity gold refinery and the completion of discussions for a $450 million manganese refinery at Nsuta.

Akufo-Addo made sent a reminder to miners of responsible practices in the need to protect Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.

“I pray more of us get to embrace the need for protection of our lands and waterbodies.
Fight against galamsey is not fight against mining or extraction of the goLd the almighty has generously endowed us with. We owe it to future generations to extract in manner that protects environment”.

He called on all stakeholders to support efforts to balance resource extraction with environmental preservation.

As Akufo-Addo delved into the government’s achievements in enhancing digital services and promoting democratic processes, his bodyguard, who was standing behind him, began showing signs of distress.

He started rubbing his face, fidgeting and his breath becoming laboured, and he seemed to struggle to maintain his balance.

Despite his efforts, the bodyguard ultimately fell to the floor.

The situation caused a brief moment of concern in the chamber. However, the president’s security detail quickly sprang into action.

Other members of the security team immediately attended to the fallen officer and ushered him outside.

Ghana is not broke; we’re handing over $8 billion in reserves – Akufo-Addo [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-is-not-broke-were-handing-over-8-billion-in-reserves-akufo-addo-video/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 11:47:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489787 President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has dismissed claims that Ghana’s economy is in dire straits, asserting that the country is being handed over with robust financial reserves.

Speaking at a public event, the President challenged narratives suggesting economic mismanagement, emphasizing the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and growth.

“The country is not broke, as some propagandists want us to believe. We’re handing over the country with gross international reserves of almost 8 billion United States dollars,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo compared this to the state of reserves when his administration assumed office. “This is more than the 6.2 billion United States dollars of gross international reserves my administration inherited in 2017,” he added.

Addressing critics, the President stressed the importance of relying on data over speculation. “The noise will not shut out the statistics, and I intend to put the statistics on the record, no matter the amount of noise,” he declared.

The President’s remarks come amidst ongoing debates about the state of Ghana’s economy, with opposition parties and some analysts raising concerns over debt levels and economic challenges following John Dramani Mahama’s victory in the December 7 elections.

The fire, which erupted in the early hours of January 2, destroyed over 100 shops, leaving many traders without their primary source of income.

President Akufo-Addo extended heartfelt sympathies to the affected traders, acknowledging the significant impact on their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, he assured that the government stands in solidarity with those affected and is committed to collaborating with relevant agencies to determine the cause of the fire and provide necessary support.

“My thoughts and prayers are with those affected, and I extend heartfelt sympathies to the hardworking traders who have lost their goods and investments. Government stands with you and will work with relevant agencies to ascertain the causes of the fire and to provide the needed support,” he said.

The President emphasized the nation’s unity in compassion and solidarity, urging collective efforts to assist those who have suffered losses during this challenging time.

The Kantamanto Market, known as Ghana’s largest hub for second-hand clothing, plays a vital role in Accra’s informal economy.

The recent fire has caused substantial financial losses, with goods worth millions of Ghana cedis destroyed.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded to the blaze with 13 fire tenders but faced challenges due to the fire’s scale and obstructions within the market.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, with some traders suspecting arson.

‘The record speaks for itself’ – BoG Governor defends central bank’s independence https://www.adomonline.com/the-record-speaks-for-itself-bog-governor-defends-central-banks-independence/ Fri, 03 Jan 2025 07:18:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489694 Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Ernest Yedu Addison, has firmly dismissed claims that the central bank lacks independence from the government.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition on January 2, he highlighted the bank’s track record over the last eight years, stressing that the institution has consistently operated independently despite external perceptions.

Responding to questions about the BoG’s autonomy, Dr Addison was unequivocal saying “I think the Bank of Ghana has operated very independently. The record speaks for itself.”

He pointed to several years of zero financing of government deficits as evidence of this independence.

“People do not believe that there was zero financing in 2017, zero financing in 2018, zero financing in 2019,” he emphasized.

“Now in 2020, you had COVID. The government went to Parliament and got approval to get GH¢10 billion from the central bank. In 2021, we were back to zero financing with a lot of effort from the central bank.”

Dr Addison explained that the pandemic-induced crisis in 2022 necessitated some intervention but stressed that such exceptions were not indicative of routine practices.

“Those who don’t believe that the bank is independent do not understand the issues,” he said.

On whether the BoG requires additional reforms to enhance its independence, Dr Addison was clear, “I don’t buy into that argument that the Bank of Ghana needs to be made more independent. I think the Bank of Ghana can operate effectively as is.”

Instead, he advocated for legislative reforms that would ensure government accountability when borrowing from the central bank.

“What I do buy is to put into place reforms in the Act which would ensure that when governments borrow, they pay,” he explained.

Dr Addison also addressed misconceptions about the BoG’s financial losses, particularly a reported GH¢60 billion loss.

He clarified that these losses were not accumulated in a single year but spanned decades of unpaid government debt.

“The GH¢60 billion was not borrowed in one year,” he said.

“These are borrowings that have come since PNDC days. You just have to break down that GH¢60 billion—how much of it was from 1970 to 1980? How much was it from 1980 to 1990? How much was from 1990 to 2000?”

To prevent such long-term accumulations, Dr. Addison suggested reforms to ensure that government borrowings are repaid within the same fiscal year.

“Once we are able to put into place reforms which force governments to pay back in the same year, then you will not accumulate debt over the number of years that it has been done over the last 20 or 25 years,” he said.

Dr Addison’s remarks underscore the BoG’s commitment to maintaining its independence while highlighting the need for systemic reforms to address legacy issues.

“The Bank of Ghana’s autonomy is not just a principle; it’s a record,” he said.

NPP used my popularity to get votes – Asamoah Gyan says https://www.adomonline.com/npp-used-my-popularity-to-get-votes-asamoah-gyan-says/ Thu, 02 Jan 2025 16:28:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489629 Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan has accused the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of exploiting his fame to garner votes ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Gyan, who was appointed to lead the “Youth and Sports” sub-committee for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, stepped down from the role weeks before the elections.

He cited his desire to focus on “humanitarian work” as the reason for his resignation, following a viral video that showed an altercation between him and an NPP official.

In a live session on Instagram, Gyan accused the NPP of using his popularity as a tool to influence voters.

“They [NPP] used my popularity to get votes from the people,” he said.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP candidate, ultimately lost the presidential election to John Dramani Mahama. Bawumia received 4,735,687 votes (41.40%), while Mahama secured 6,499,082 votes (56.81%).

Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Gyan highlighted that essential services like police stations, hospitals, and fuel stations already operate continuously.

“It already exists. Police stations, hospitals, and filling stations already operate on a 24-hour basis. So, if the government says ’24-hour economy,’ they should say that they will improve it. It’s not a new policy,” Gyan stated.

His comments come as discussions continue over the proposed 24-hour economy, a flagship campaign promise of former President John Mahama and the NDC during the 2024 general elections.

The policy aims to boost economic activity by fostering businesses and creating employment opportunities, particularly within the informal sector.

Supporters of the initiative argue that it extends beyond the current system, aiming to incorporate sectors like retail, transportation, and entertainment into a comprehensive 24-hour operational framework.

With John Mahama emerging victorious in the elections, he has reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the policy when he assumes office on January 7, 2025.

This provisional budget, amounting to GHS 68 billion, is designed to ensure the government’s operations from January to March while awaiting the incoming administration’s full budget presentation.

The mini-budget has been referred to the Budget Committee for review before the House deliberates on its approval.

In his presentation, Dr. Amin Adam expressed hope for a swift endorsement, emphasizing its critical role in sustaining the state’s activities and ensuring a smooth transition of governance.

This allocation will cater to essential expenditures, including the inauguration of the President-elect, the election of the Speaker for the 9th Parliament, public sector salaries, and other state operations.

As the 8th Parliament prepares to dissolve, the passage of this mini-budget is seen as pivotal in laying a stable foundation for the upcoming administration and facilitating the nation’s smooth governance in the new year.

The MPs highlight OPK’s exceptional intelligence and contributions during the 8th Parliament as key reasons for their appeal.

His insightful input in parliamentary debates and active engagement on caucus platforms have earned him widespread respect within the party’s parliamentary group.

Described by colleagues as bold, articulate, and highly organized, OPK has consistently energized and mobilized members.

They believe his inclusion in the Whip team would bolster the NPP’s parliamentary leadership while providing backbenchers with a proactive and reliable liaison.

As Deputy Ranking Member of the Public Accounts Committee, OPK has demonstrated a strong commitment to accountability and a deep understanding of parliamentary processes.

MPs argue that this experience equips him to play a pivotal role in steering the NPP caucus, particularly during the transition to opposition.

Supporters emphasize that OPK’s dynamic leadership and ability to unite members will be critical in maintaining cohesion and discipline within the caucus.

They also view his inclusion as a step toward prioritizing youthful, results-oriented leaders who can strengthen the NPP’s position in the 9th Parliament.

This call reflects a broader appeal for the party to invest in emerging leaders like OPK to remain effective and credible in the coming years.

McDan addresses $3m debt allegations; seeks dialogue over terminal shutdown https://www.adomonline.com/mcdan-addresses-3m-debt-allegations-seeks-dialogue-over-terminal-shutdown/ Thu, 02 Jan 2025 11:01:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489471 The management of McDan Group of Companies says it is committed to a dialogue to resolve the issues leading to the shutdown of their terminal at the Kotoka International Airport, Accra.

“Nevertheless, we remain committed to engaging in constructive dialogue to achieve a favourable resolution” the company stated.

The private Aviation company also expressed its disappointment in the Ghana Airport Company Limited’s (GACL) decision to shut down its private jet terminal at the airport.

“McDan Aviation expresses its disappointment regarding the recent decision by the Ghana Airport Company Limited to deny access to our terminal,” the company said in a press statement issued following its shutdown by GACL.

On Monday, December 30, GACL shut down McDan’s terminal over an outstanding debt of $3 million.

The company acknowledged its financial responsibilities but stated that these issues had not been actively discussed.

McDan also confirmed that “last week, we made an additional payment with the plan to continue payments from January 2025.”

The statement, signed by McDan’s Chief Executive Officer, Kwaku Ampromfi, clarified that the company does not owe GACL the reported $3 million.

“It is important to note, however, that McDan Aviation does not owe GACL $3,000,000.00 for the terminal, as has been erroneously reported,” the statement read.

The company further explained that it is currently involved in a land litigation case, of which GACL is aware. McDan added that this issue had been communicated to GACL, with a request to suspend payments until the court case is resolved.

McDan Aviation Hub is the first and only freight company in Ghana to obtain an air carrier licence for chartered cargo flights. It is currently a general sales agent (GSA) for several airlines and holds a Fixed Base Operations (FBO) licence for private jet operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport.

NDC’s court objection misplaced, EC already addressing issues – Afenyo-Markin https://www.adomonline.com/ndcs-court-objection-misplaced-ec-already-addressing-issues-afenyo-markin/ Wed, 01 Jan 2025 13:20:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489334 The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has dismissed the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) objection to a mandamus application filed by four New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates.

According to him, the Electoral Commission (EC) was already addressing the disputed results in four constituencies through administrative processes.

Speaking after the High Court set January 1, 2025, to rule on the NDC’s objection, Mr Afenyo-Markin noted that the EC had explained earlier that there were irregularities in collation which led to the declared results in Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central and Dome Kwabenya.

“The EC itself has stated emphatically that there was no earlier valid declaration of results in these constituencies. The argument that results were declared is neither here nor there,” he said.

Nonetheless, Afenyo-Markin highlighted the significance of the ongoing legal process, contrasting it with what he described as the NDC’s initial response to the disputed results.

“At least, we’ve managed to bring them to civility in the courtroom. We believe in the rule of law and are confident in the outcome,” he said.

The NPP candidates’ mandamus application seeks to compel the EC to complete its collation and declaration of results, a process the EC had already planned to redo administratively.

The High Court’s ruling on January 1, 2025, will decide whether it can proceed to hear the mandamus application or dismiss it based on the NDC’s objection.

Speaking with deep gratitude and faith during crossover service at Nigel Gaisie’s Prophetic Hill Chapel, he expressed his reliance on divine guidance for the journey ahead.

He reflected on the party’s hard-fought victory, acknowledging the mercy of God in their success.

“The God who has been merciful to us will continue to show us mercy. We worked hard, but Bible say chariots are prepared for battle, but victory is from God. We have worked before, harder than this time but we didn’t win. This time God has given us a victory beyond all victories”.

Nonetheless, Mr Vanderpuye further made two principal appeals to God; to grant the party wisdom and guidance to successfully lead the nation of over 34.12 million people.

He also prayed that NDC-led government will be one that will glorify God with all their actions and bring ease to its subjects.

Speaking to journalists after the Electoral Commission (EC) officially affirmed her win at an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on December 31, 2024, she attributed her success to perseverance, hard work, dedication, and faith.

Akurugu said the EC’s affirmation was simply a confirmation of her initial declaration as the winner on December 8, 2024.

“Today is not a new declaration, but an affirmation. I just want to thank God for how far He has brought us,” she said.

In her statement, she made an analogy to a large animal, referring to the NPP’s dominance in the constituency.

“We all know that the elephant is a big animal, and when you kill it, it takes time before it finally dies. So today, finally, the elephant is dead, and Dome/Kwabenya has come to stay,” she remarked, attributing her success to hard work, dedication, and prayer.

Madam Akurugu thanked her supporters and campaign team for their tireless efforts, acknowledging the difficulties during the election process.

“The process was not easy due to the ups and downs, but I want to thank everyone who supported us through the long hours. The voice of the people has finally spoken. To God be the glory, great things He has done, and greater things He will do,” she added.

She pledged to maintain the trust of her constituents through hard work and service.

“It’s hard work that will make the people maintain me for a long time, and that hard work starts today. I promise my constituents that we will make Dome/Kwabenya a place everyone will love to be,” she concluded.

Be MP for All – Appoh tells A-Plus https://www.adomonline.com/be-mp-for-all-appoh-tells-a-plus/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 19:04:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489262 The former Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Honourable Rachel Appoh has advised the Member of Parliament-elect for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng to look beyond his party in his bid to lead the constituency.

In the view of Honourable Appoh, Mr. Asare Obeng popularly known as Kwame A-Plus must not only concentrate on his party members but rather on the general development of Gomoa Central Constituency.

The first female Gomoa Central MP urged Kwame A-Plus to utilize the MP’s share of the Common Fund across the constituency.

“As an independent candidate who won with such a margin, I expect him to use the Common Fund across the Constituency”, Honourable Appoh stated at an election victory dinner.

The former deputy Gender Minister indicated that, in the lead up to the December general elections, there was no way she could have campaigned for A-Plus although he had been a brother from the same media house.

She explained “NDC made me, I was a student leader groomed by the party and the NDC supported me in my first election. I would forever be grateful and loyal to the NDC:”

Madam Appoh however indicated her resolve to support Kwame A-Plus in all his endeavours to the greater good of the Constituents.

“I would support him in everything he does with my experience, energy and resources…” she maintained.

Earlier, the entertainer and politician recounted how Madam Appoh had campaigned for the NDC, giving him a run for his money.

Kwame A-Plus recalled that although the NDC’s Regional Chairman and Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia campaigned for the NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate in the Constituency, Madam Appoh was the fiercest campaigner in the polls.

He said he expected Honourable Appoh to be lenient with him due to their common place of work but that was not to be.

Carved from Gomoa East, Kwame A-Plus is the first independent candidate to win the Gomoa Central seat.

Full Text: EC explains what happened in Dome-Kwabenya constituency https://www.adomonline.com/full-text-ec-explains-what-happened-in-dome-kwabenya-constituency/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 19:01:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489241

This decision resolves the long-standing disagreements between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the election results in the constituency.

After an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Tuesday, 31 December, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa announced that the electoral process for Dome-Kwabenya had been completed and finalised.

Below is full text of the EC chair’s explanation to what happened in Dome Kwabenya Constituency:

Good afternoon to all of you, our media partners and members of the NDC and particularly from the Dome-Kwanenya Constituency. We would like to welcome all of you warmly. We thank the good Lord for making it possible for us to witness the last day of the year.

Indeed to him be all the glory, great things he has done and greater things he will do. Our purpose here this afternoon is simple. It is to provide you, the citizens of Ghana, with an update on the parliamentary election in Dome-Kwanenya Constituency.

As you may be aware, on the night of the election, some leaders of political parties asked their supporters to go into our collation centres and this led to chaos and some confusion.

In Dome-Kwanenya, the constituency was no exception. The collation centre was besieged by parties supporters who brought collation there to a halt. In the process, pink sheets, results collation forms and other materials were destroyed and collation was not completed on that day.

Since then, as a Commission, we tried to ensure the completion of the collation and as you may bear witness, we held the first exercise to complete the collation in the Dome-Kwanenya Constituency on the 21st of December.

Unfortunately, although we came a long way, we were not able to complete it because there were three polling station pink sheets outstanding.

In our second attempt to complete the process, we again brought together the parties, basically the NDC and the NPP with their agents to assist us to bring the collation to a completion to enable us to declare the outcome of the election.

That collation was held on the 28th, just this past Saturday, the 28th of December. At that meeting, the NDC was able to provide two pink sheets which was confirmed by our staff at the constituency.

Unfortunately, there was a missing pink sheet, one pink sheet for the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre and both the NDC and the NPP did not have paint sheets.

It’s important to note that the NPP did not have any paint sheets, any of the three paint sheets at all, but after scrutinising the pink sheets presented by the NDC, they were found to be legitimate and they tied with what we had also found. The missing link was this polling station sheet which none of the parties had and it was for the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre. It’s important to note that in the attempt to re-collate, our officer had brought a pink sheet for the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre and it bore, on the face of it, training.

It had written on the face of it the word ‘training’ and it was a presidential pink sheet. And so, in the view of the Commission, a training pink sheet had no business at the polling station on election day and upon scrutinising it, the Commission was of the view that it could not be accepted. It is important to note that the parties also did not have any evidence.

Both NDC and NPP did not have the pink sheets to confirm whether what was written on the training sheet was legitimate and was accurate. And so in the view of the Commission and in the interest of fairness, the Commission felt that it was proper to re-run the election for that particular polling station to ensure fairness.

We have always maintained as a Commission that our interest is not to make anybody a president and this is something we have said across board to all our officers.

Our interest is to conduct credible and transparent elections that are fair, that ensure that the will of the people as expressed at the polls is upheld.

And so once none of the parties had any pink sheets to confirm and they both said they didn’t have it, we agreed at that meeting that we should have a re-run. It’s important to note that at that meeting, the NDC agreed that we had to have a re-run.

The NPP was of the view that because their agents had left the centre, they had not taken part in the collation and therefore they wanted the Commission to start the collation afresh.

We explained to them that the Commission had received all the pink sheets and I think that was 369, I believe it was 369 polling stations, and we of course checked that against what had been done by the returning officer and it was accurate.

It was just that one missing pink sheet and that is why we took the decision to have a re-run. And this as I said was agreed to by the NDC. Since then we have not rested on our oars and we’ve tried to unravel how we came by this.

In all of this, as you may be aware, we of course had reached out to the returning officer and our district officer but we did not have any explanation for the use of the training sheet. What they had said was that the presiding officer realised at the point of filling the form that what she had was a presidential pink sheet and therefore she used a presidential training sheet. It didn’t add up.

It was not convincing. And so two days ago as a Commission, in our investigation we had a light-bulb moment. Why don’t we go to the ground? Rather than deal with collation agents at the collation centre, why don’t we identify, look out for the agents, the polling agents at the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre? And so we took steps. We reached out to the parties and we were able to do that. The Presiding Officer was out of town.

We were able to also reach her and ask her to return to Accra to answer a few questions.

This morning we met with her and she explained to us how she arrived at the training sheet. She actually arrived at using the pink sheet for presidential training with training and boss on it.

It’s important to note that she did not have this training sheet with her on election day. And it’s also important to note that contrary to what is being peddled in the news, that training sheet was not signed by party agents. The question has been asked that, oh it’s the EC’s sheet, why are they not using it? Training sheets have no place at the polling station and that’s why we are not using it.

It was not a parliamentary training sheet, it was presidential one and it was not signed by any of the party agents. What she has explained is that, as I mentioned, she recognised that she did not have the parliamentary training sheet, she had the presidential. So she tallied everything on paper, she had both agents of the NPP and the NDC confirm the figure and they decided they agreed to go to the collation centre to obtain a copy of the parliamentary training sheet.

Once there, they were informed to go to the district office. On their way there, unfortunately they were accosted by some thugs who threatened their lives and in the process she fled. The good news is that she had the sheet in her bag but she fled and she says that the agents also disserted and they all left.

And so none of them had the results. She had it on a sheet. I’m happy to note, however, that the parties, although we did not have a pink sheet for parliamentary, signed and completed and each party also had their own tally cards and on that tally sheet they had the number of persons who came through. They had all the details, including the results, the total for each political party. We have received that from the NDC.

Although they are not present here, the presiding officer, some days after the election, reached out to the party agents and the agent for the NDC sent his copy and we’ve seen that; we have the evidence and their communication.

And the tally is that of what our presiding officer had on a training sheet. We have also met with the NDC agent and we’ve also taken a record of his tally sheet which also contains the number of people who came to the centre and the votes for each of the parties and the tally.

And that has enabled us to arrive at the completion today. So today, the Commission is pleased to note that it has brought proceedings and collations at the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency to a close.

It has gone full circle and we are convinced without a shadow of doubt that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls.

So as mentioned, ours is not to make anybody president, it is to ensure that our outcomes and our processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld. So we are happy to note that we have come full circle today and the outcome of that election has been confirmed, has been legitimate, has been the choice of the people.

I think that the lesson in it is that our processes must be allowed to work.

I know that the candidates have been through quite a bit, but the processes must be allowed to work. I’d like to also put on record that we don’t rest on our oars yet and we’ve burnt the midnight oil to ensure that the right thing is done.

And we’re pleased that we had that flash, that light-bulb moment to go down, to drill down to the ground and that has brought out the truth and the truth will be upheld. So thank you very much for your time this afternoon.

Our victory is a triumph of Ghana’s soul over NPP’s corruption – Fifi Kwetey https://www.adomonline.com/our-victory-is-a-triumph-of-ghanas-soul-over-npps-corruption-fifi-kwetey/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 18:37:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489221 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has described its victory in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections as a triumph for the “soul of Ghana” over the corruption and mismanagement of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

Speaking at the 43rd anniversary of the 31st December Revolution, NDC General Secretary, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey heavily criticized the current administration for what he termed “unprecedented levels of greed, selfishness, and policy failures,” which have led to widespread poverty across the country.

“The lies, the selfishness, and the greed we have witnessed under this government are unprecedented,” Mr Kwetey said.

“The corruption and decadence have reached alarming levels, and the policies have failed to address the needs of the people. As a result, poverty has become endemic under the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia administration.”

He added that the people of Ghana, faced with these failures, were naturally driven to “rebel” against the government’s shortcomings.

“In the midst of all this, the soul of Ghana willed to rebel,” Mr Kwetey stated. “This victory, therefore, is the victory of the soul of Ghana against the decadence of the NPP.”

While celebrating the NDC’s progress, he stressed the need for the party to reflect on its responsibilities, urging it to move beyond political rivalry and focus on the country’s collective welfare.

“We must transcend the ‘me versus them’ mentality,” he said.

“Ghana must become the centre of all we do.There are good people in the NPP and we need to find ways to celebrate those good people and urge that they gradually take over that party so that that party becomes just as virtuous as we are trying to make the NDC, so that we can have two parties that boast, care and love this country and believe in truth for the sake of the future of our country.”

The NDC General Secretary further stated that while he could wish for the NPP to remain in turmoil, his true hope for Ghana is progress and unity.

“I know I am expected to wish that the NPP remains in difficulty, but that is not my wish for Ghana,” he said.

“We must remain grounded, humble, and recognize the enormity of the challenges ahead. Ghana does not expect perfection from John Mahama or the NDC. What Ghana wants is leadership that is committed to the well-being of its people and leaders who have the courage to accept the truth when necessary”.

The 43rd anniversary of the 31st December Revolution, commemorated at the Nungua Town Park, marks a key event in the NDC’s history.

The theme for this year’s event, “Victory 2024, Time to Reset Ghana,” reflects the party’s political significance.

The revolution, led by the late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, overthrew the People’s National Party (PNP) government of Dr Hilla Limann in 1981, driven by a desire to address economic mismanagement, corruption, and inefficiency in governance.

Legally-backed committee needed to determine who deserves state awards – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/legally-backed-committee-needed-to-determine-who-deserves-state-awards-asiedu-nketia/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 18:36:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489205 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has proposed the establishment of a committee to oversee the issuing of state awards.

According to him, such a committee should be established in the future and should be backed by law, with the mandate to carefully identify and honour deserving citizens who have made significant contributions to the country’s development.

He said, “I want to suggest to the people of Ghana that it is high time we establish a proper committee, backed by law, that will determine who should receive a national award.”

Mr Nketia made these comments following the state awards ceremony held yesterday in Accra, under the auspices of the outgoing President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He argued that many of the individuals honoured by the President did not deserve the recognition. He criticised Nana Akufo-Addo for awarding his cronies without considering their contributions to the nation’s development.

For him, one of the awardees, the outgoing Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, was undeserving of the honour.

He questioned, “Why would anyone with a properly functioning mind award someone like Hawa Koomson, who was involved in shooting and killing Ghanaians during the election?”

He also expressed dissatisfaction over the individuals honoured by the president, stating, “We have begun conferring state honours on looters and murderers. What are we doing? We are teaching the youth that, after all, there is nothing wrong with looting state coffers, that there is nothing wrong with shooting and killing your fellow Ghanaians,” he claimed.

Mr Nketia believes that with the establishment of a committee to oversee the awards, those who truly deserve recognition would be honoured, rather than following the current approach of the president.

He was speaking at this year’s 31st revolution anniversary of the NDC, held in Accra on Tuesday, December 31.

Akufo-Addo endorsed all the wrongs by his appointees – Asiedu Nketia claims https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-endorsed-all-the-wrongs-by-his-appointees-asiedu-nketia-claims/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 18:27:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489199 Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticized the outgoing President, Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing him of being the mastermind behind what he described as the wrongdoings in the system since 2017.

The Chairman claimed that several of the nation’s troubles in recent years, including the post-election violence in 2020, which resulted in the loss of lives, corrupt practices by some government officials, and other misdeeds, were orchestrated by the outgoing president.

He argued that, the state honours awarded to many top officials in the president’s government demonstrated that the president supports the numerous wrongs that have occurred in the country.

“We have begun conferring state honours on looters and murderers. What are we doing? We are teaching the youth that, after all, there is nothing wrong with looting state coffers, that after all, there is nothing wrong with shooting and killing your fellow Ghanaians. If anyone had any doubt about the mastermind behind all the killings and looting over the past eight years, I believe the award ceremony that took place yesterday has cleared all doubts. All the wrongdoings committed by Nana Akufo-Addo’s appointees were actually endorsed by the big man himself,” he alleged.

Mr Nketia made these remarks at the NDC’s 43rd anniversary of the 31st December Revolution in Accra on Tuesday, December 31.

According to him, state awards should be given to individuals who have played significant roles in a nation’s building and development, not to individuals of questionable character such as the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and outgoing Fisheries Minister, Hawa Koomson.

The outgoing MP, Hawa Koomson, was allegedly involved in the shooting and killing of constituents in Kasoa during the 2020 general election. She has since faced public criticism for her actions throughout her political career. She was also accused of carrying out similar violent acts in the just-ended 2024 election.

“Why would anyone with a properly functioning mind award someone like Hawa Koomson, who was involved in shooting and killing Ghanaians during the elections?” Asiedu Nketia said.

He emphasized, “State awards are serious matters and should be reserved for people of distinction – people who have fought for a good cause. If we are awarding state honours to vigilante groups, then that is the message we are sending to the youth: that it is acceptable to pick up weapons and shoot at people, that it is acceptable to loot state coffers when given the opportunity to serve as a minister.”

NPP National Treasurer assures party members that all officers shall render post-elections account https://www.adomonline.com/npp-national-treasurer-assures-party-members-that-all-officers-shall-render-post-elections-account/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 16:57:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489164 The National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Charles Dwamena, has called on members of the Bawumia 2024 Campaign Team to account for the funds and logistics allocated to them during the recently concluded campaign.

In a press release issued on Monday, December 30, 2024, Dr. Dwamena, popularly known as Dr. China, emphasized that rendering proper accounts is non-negotiable and crucial for understanding any shortcomings in the campaign.

Addressing a misleading report regarding the printing of ID cards for party executives in 2022, he assured members that all officers or campaign team members who received resources during the 2024 campaign will be held accountable for their use.

Update on ID Cards for Executive Members
Dr. Dwamena stated that over 90% of ID cards for executive members at all levels—polling station to national—have been printed and distributed.

The remaining 10% are at the Party Headquarters, awaiting collection by the regional secretariats.

He also highlighted the ongoing registration and issuance of ID cards to non-executive members in various constituencies, encouraging all eligible members to participate in the process.

Clarification on Party Donations and Expenditures
Dr. Dwamena dispelled allegations about the mismanagement of party funds, stating that all donations are deposited into Party coffers, not individual accounts. He explained:

  • The Party’s structures and working procedures prevent unilateral decisions or expenditures by any individual.
  • Expenditures require approval from the National Chairman and General Secretary, after which the National Treasurer ensures proper disbursement.

Dr. Dwamena expressed gratitude to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, and other leading Party members for their generous contributions toward Party activities.

We are confident of victory – Afenyo-Markin on disputed seats https://www.adomonline.com/we-are-confident-of-victory-afenyo-markin-on-disputed-seats/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 15:39:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489133 The Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has expressed confidence in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) prospects of winning the legal battle over disputed parliamentary seats.

Speaking to the media after an Accra High Court adjourned proceedings on December 31, 2024, Afenyo-Markin reassured party supporters that due process would prevail, asserting that the NPP would retain the contested seats in four constituencies.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu dismissed claims of irregularities in the Electoral Commission’s (EC) redeclaration of the disputed seats, which were initially declared in favor of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“We have every patience for the law. A court process may be slow, but with surety, you will get results when you know you are on firm grounds. The Electoral Commission itself has emphasized that there is no such thing as a declaration of results in Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Dome Kwabenya.

“They have already administratively declared those results as illegal, and the EC is doing its work. So, this argument that they have declared results is neither here nor there,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin expressed optimism about the outcome, stating, “We firmly believe that, in the end, we will be victorious. There is no rush because we are following due process. Initially, they pursued a path of violence. At least now, we have managed to bring them to the courtroom, instill civility, and ensure they abide by the rule of law. That is our joy. This is the NPP—we believe in the rule of law and stand for doing the right thing. We are not worried at all.”

The Accra High Court is handling the NDC’s preliminary objection against the NPP’s mandamus application regarding the disputed constituencies of Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South.

The court was scheduled to rule on December 31, 2024, but the decision has been adjourned to January 1, 2025.

State awards not meant for ‘vigilante boys and girls’ – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/state-awards-not-meant-for-vigilante-boys-and-girls-asiedu-nketia/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 15:00:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489077 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has voiced strong criticism against President Nana Akufo-Addo regarding the selection process for recipients of the recent National State Awards.

Speaking during the 43rd-anniversary celebration of the 31st December Revolution, Asiedu Nketiah raised concerns about the credibility of the awards, claiming that some individuals did not merit the honors they received.

He also questioned the transparency of the selection criteria, arguing that it undermines the prestige and significance of the awards.

The NDC Chairman called for the introduction of legislation to regulate the organization and conferral of National and State Awards.

He emphasized the need for a transparent, fair, and merit-based system to uphold the integrity of such recognitions.

“State awards are serious matters. They must be reserved for individuals of distinction—people who have fought for a good cause. If we confer state honors on vigilante boys and girls, then we are teaching the youth that it is acceptable to pick up weapons and harm others. That it is acceptable to loot state coffers as a minister,” he stated.

Mr. Nketia proposed the establishment of a legally-backed committee to oversee the selection process for national awards.

“It is time we set up a proper committee, supported by law, to determine who truly deserves a national award,” he concluded.

Ghana’s crisis requires fervent prayers – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/ghanas-crisis-requires-fervent-prayers-mahama/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 14:59:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489040 President-elect John Dramani Mahama has urged supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to intensify their prayers, stressing the need for greater spiritual dedication than during the campaign period.

Speaking to NDC supporters, Mahama highlighted the importance of seeking divine guidance to empower the party to implement policies aimed at improving the lives of all Ghanaians.

“This is the time we need to engage in fervent prayers, even more than during the campaign, for God to grant us the strength and wisdom to implement measures that will make Ghana a better place to live. All I will say is that it is finished; God has already done it,” Mahama said.

He criticized the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration for leaving behind substantial debts, particularly in education and energy, which his government must address.

Mahama accused the NPP of deliberately creating financial traps to hinder his administration’s success.

“The NPP government has set a trap for us, but we shall not be caught in that trap. The Almighty God who granted us electoral victory will see us through the difficulties until we achieve success. God will give us the wisdom to lead this country and make it better for future generations,” he assured.

Mahama also addressed public concerns about delays in funding the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), referencing criticism shared on social media regarding the issue.

He concluded by reaffirming his faith in overcoming these challenges with divine assistance and a collective commitment to Ghana’s progress.
