According to a press release from the two organizations, the successful transition demonstrated the resilience and maturity of Ghana’s political system in maintaining stability and unity despite potential challenges.

“The early concession of defeat by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate, helped prevent tensions and violence,” the statement noted. Similarly, the release highlighted President John Mahama’s call on his supporters to refrain from attacking public installations, emphasizing that such actions underscored the leaders’ commitment to democratic progress and national unity.

However, IDEG and CFI believe it is crucial to reflect on certain negative incidents that nearly disrupted the country’s peace during the election transition phase.

“Despite the goodwill shown by the leaders of the two major political parties, we must address the major incidents of post-election violence, such as organized hooliganism, raids, arson of state property, and other disruptive acts by party loyalists,” the statement said.

A particular concern raised by IDEG and CFI is the tense and chaotic re-collation of parliamentary results in nine constituencies, with special mention of the unresolved situation at Ablekuma North.

The release stressed that these challenges highlight “the urgent need for targeted interventions to resolve disputes related to the collation and declaration of parliamentary election results.”

The organizations warned that if such lawless acts are left unchecked, they could pose serious risks to Ghana’s political stability and security in the future.

To prevent a recurrence of such disruptions, IDEG and CFI called on law enforcement agencies, particularly the Attorney General’s Department and the Ghana Police Service, to take swift action. “Perpetrators must be arrested, and due process followed to its conclusive end, to serve as a deterrent to potential offenders,” the statement urged.

The organizations also appealed to political parties to work closely with the Electoral Commission to prevent tensions and delays associated with the collation of election results.

“Political parties must cooperate with the Electoral Commission to ensure that the tensions and delays experienced in the collation process do not reoccur in future elections,” they stated.

Furthermore, the press release called on key stakeholders—including political party leaders, civil society organizations, the media, and traditional and religious leaders—to intensify efforts to educate the public on transitional arrangements to promote peaceful conduct in the post-election period.

“Stakeholders must play their role in educating the citizenry to ensure peaceful transitions in future elections,” the statement highlighted.

IDEG and CFI reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to deepen dialogue, enhance civic education, and secure transformational reforms for national unity and stability.

“We will continue to work with political parties and civil society organizations to ensure transformational reforms that will contribute to national unity and stability,” the release concluded.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, the former NPP Youth Organizer emphasized that the report is not for public consumption, but rather to guide the party’s leadership in resolving internal issues.

“Let me limit people’s expectations here, Professor Mike Oquaye’s Committee report will not be made public for discussion. It is meant for the executives to know what went wrong, but not meant for the public to talk about,” Mr. Awuku told sit-in host, Akwasi Nsiah.

He further explained that after the report is submitted, the party hierarchy will implement its recommendations.

Mr. Awuku also appealed to party members who are upset over the defeat to be given the opportunity to express their frustrations. According to him, allowing these individuals to voice their concerns will aid in the healing process the party is currently undertaking.

“Sometimes, when people are angry and frustrated, you allow them to pour out their frustration. After that, they become free and open-minded and come on board to help you in whatever course is being undertaken,” he said.

Ablekuma North: EC blames NDC Regional Organiser for choas at collation centre https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-ec-blames-ndc-regional-organiser-for-choas-at-collation-centre/ Sat, 18 Jan 2025 09:16:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494340 The Electoral Commission (EC) has accused the Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating the attack on its office on Friday.

The incident occurred when the collation of parliamentary election results for the Ablekuma North Constituency was expected to resume.

Louvre blades and other properties at the EC’s old head office were destroyed by suspected thugs of the NDC.

In a statement, the EC alleged that the NDC official led the group in the invasion and vandalism.

The statement also reported the alarming presence of two unidentified individuals dressed in military attire during the chaos.

It added that staff at the New Corporate Head Office reported threats from the attackers, raising further concerns over their safety.

Expressing concern and disappointment in the lack of security support from the police, the EC bemoaned the incident has further delayed the collation and declaration of results for Ablekuma North.

Meanwhile, the Commission is demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

Ablekuma North: EC must respect legal process – Dr Tanko-Computer https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-ec-must-respect-legal-process-dr-tanko-computer/ Fri, 17 Jan 2025 17:33:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494270 The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to respect the legal process amid the ongoing dispute over the Ablekuma North election results.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse Show, Dr. Tanko-Computer stressed that the EC must adhere to the legal proceedings currently before the courts.

This appeal follows the EC’s decision to suspend today’s collation for Ablekuma North due to disturbances caused by political party supporters at the Greater Accra Regional Collation Centre.

The unrest led to the temporary halt of the collation process, further delaying the declaration of results for the constituency.

Dr. Tanko-Computer expressed concern over the EC’s actions, questioning why there seemed to be a rush to bypass the legal process. “Whatever they are doing, they must proceed with caution,” he said. “Why the haste to circumvent the legal process? This is the issue we have with the EC. They must respect the legal process and refrain from taking actions that could undermine it.”

He also made it clear that the NDC will not accept the declaration of an “illegal” candidate as the winner for Ablekuma North. “We will not accept it, I can assure you, we will use every legal means available to challenge any illegalities in this electoral process,” he warned.

Ablekuma North remains the only constituency from the 7 December elections where a winner has not yet been declared, due to ongoing disputes over the results.

Kpandai MP blames Bagbin for NPP’s election defeat https://www.adomonline.com/kpandai-mp-blames-bagbin-for-npps-election-defeat/ Thu, 16 Jan 2025 16:07:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493661 Kpandai Member of Parliament (MP) Matthew Nyindam has blamed Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 elections.

According to him, Ghana found itself in a unique situation where, while former President Akufo-Addo was head of state, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) controlled the eighth parliament.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam show, he criticized the lack of cooperation from the legislature, stating that Bagbin’s leadership failed to support the government in fulfilling its objectives.

“The NPP faced significant challenges because the 8th Parliament was not working in the best interests of the government. Bagbin, being an NDC member, led a parliament that never supported the former Akufo-Addo government, which created a difficult situation for the party and the nation,” he asserted.

Reflecting on events leading up to the 2024 election, Mr. Nyindam described the period as one filled with “disasters” that ultimately hurt the NPP’s chances.

Despite the NPP’s loss, he remains optimistic about its future, stating that the NPP is still a strong party.

The MP also took the opportunity to defend Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate.

He argued that Dr. Bawumia should not be blamed for the party’s defeat, emphasizing that the challenges faced by the NPP were largely external.

“The elections were not about Dr. Bawumia. The election was about the party as a whole, and it was external factors that affected our chances,” he added.

JoyNews Poll: Akufo-Addo, his govt’s ‘killer’ taxes and nepotism blamed for NPP’s 2024 defeat https://www.adomonline.com/joynews-poll-akufo-addo-his-govts-killer-taxes-and-nepotism-blamed-for-npps-2024-defeat/ Thu, 16 Jan 2025 06:31:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493491 A survey conducted by Joy News through its social media platforms has delivered a damning verdict on former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, holding him largely responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) stunning defeat in the December 2024 election.

The survey, which sought public views on factors contributing to the NPP’s shocking loss, revealed that the majority of respondents blamed former President Akufo-Addo, citing his government’s harsh economic policies, nepotism, corruption, and the arrogance of some of his appointees as key reasons for the party’s defeat in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Akufo-Addo to Blame
The most common sentiment expressed by respondents was criticism of former President Akufo-Addo, who was widely accused of failing to take adequate action, ultimately causing the NPP’s flagbearer and parliamentary candidates to suffer for his administration’s shortcomings.

Many respondents particularly criticized the former President for endorsing harsh and insensitive economic policies such as the e-levy, betting tax, COVID-19 levy, and poor debt management strategies.

Additionally, he was accused of shielding his cousin, former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, despite widespread criticism of his handling of the economy. Respondents highlighted that his delayed removal was perceived as a failure in leadership.

Nana Akufo-Addo was also criticized for his perceived arrogance, with many referring to instances where he reportedly instructed chiefs to stand to greet him, an action which some respondents felt disrespected traditional authorities and angered the electorate.

Several respondents further accused the former President of causing apathy within the NPP by refusing to heed internal advice and make timely changes in his government. This, they said, denied opportunities to deserving party members and created dissatisfaction among the grassroots.

The refusal to remove Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister, despite overwhelming calls from NPP MPs and ordinary Ghanaians, was cited as evidence of his unresponsiveness to public concerns.

Exorbitant Taxes
Beyond personal criticism, many respondents slammed certain policies under Akufo-Addo’s administration, claiming they brought economic hardship on Ghanaians.

Central to their concerns were taxes such as the e-levy, COVID-19 levy, and the betting tax, along with the government’s debt management approach.

Both former President Akufo-Addo and ex-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta faced strong criticism for these policies, which were described as contributing significantly to the party’s unpopularity, even among its own supporters.

Arrogant Appointees, Corruption & the ‘Clearing Agent’ Tag
Some respondents also criticized government appointees, accusing them of being arrogant and inaccessible, which they argued alienated them from the electorate and caused further disaffection for the party.

Corruption was another major theme, with several respondents revisiting scandals from the Akufo-Addo administration. Many pointed to the former President’s reputation as a “clearing agent,” a nickname he earned for exonerating appointees accused of corruption without proper investigations.

Neglect of Strongholds
The survey further highlighted dissatisfaction with the Akufo-Addo government’s neglect of key projects, particularly in the party’s strongholds such as the Ashanti Region, as well as parts of the Western and Bono/Ahafo Regions.

In the Ashanti Region, many respondents faulted Akufo-Addo for failing to prioritize major projects, especially the Suame Interchange, which they believed could have boosted the party’s fortunes.

Conclusion
In summary, most respondents who participated in the Joy News survey attributed the NPP’s defeat to former President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, blaming his administration’s policies and actions for the loss of both Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the presidential race and the unprecedented defeat of numerous NPP parliamentary candidates across the country.

Stop blaming others; we caused our own defeat – NPP Vice chair https://www.adomonline.com/stop-blaming-others-we-caused-our-own-defeat-npp-vice-chair/ Wed, 15 Jan 2025 12:12:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2493234

The Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Constituency, John Kwame Duodu, popularly known as “Sir John,” has called on members to accept responsibility for their poor performance in the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Sir John urged the NPP to move away from blame games and introspectively address the internal mistakes that led to the Party’s defeat.

“The NPP’s failure in the 2024 General Election was a result of our own mistakes. It is about time the Party did a candid self-introspection and corrected these wrongs ahead of the 2028 elections,” he stated.

Self-reflection Over Blame

Sir John emphasised the need for the Party, especially its leadership, to acknowledge their shortcomings and focus on fostering unity.

He noted that leaders entrusted with key positions in the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia administration should take responsibility for their roles in the Party’s defeat rather than shifting the blame.

His remarks come amidst widespread post-election finger-pointing within the Party. “True growth and progress can only be achieved by acknowledging and learning from our past mistakes,” Sir John added.

Caution Against Early Declarations

The outspoken NPP leader criticised members who are prematurely declaring their intentions to run for various national, regional, and constituency positions.

“It’s premature for Party leaders, who ought to know better, to be focused on the positions they envisage occupying in the upcoming internal elections, instead of helping the healing and reorganisation process after our unprecedented defeat,” Sir John opined.

He stressed that rushing into leadership contests without first addressing the causes of the 2024 defeat would be counterproductive.

Sir John commended the establishment of regional reconciliation committees, describing them as essential for addressing internal rivalries and maintaining unity within the Party.

Commendation for Dr. Bawumia’s Statesmanship

Sir John praised the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his timely concession of defeat in the presidential election.

“Dr. Bawumia’s decision to concede early was a bold move, motivated by his desire to maintain peace and stability in Ghana,” Sir John remarked.

He urged politicians to emulate Dr. Bawumia’s statesmanship by prioritising the national interest over personal ambitions.

Gratitude to Campaign Teams

In concluding his statement, Sir John expressed deep appreciation to the Party’s campaign teams across all levels for their hard work and dedication.

He acknowledged their tireless efforts, stating, “Your commitment, perseverance, and sacrifices demonstrated the true spirit of the NPP, even in the face of an unexpected defeat.”

Sir John emphasised that the loyalty and hard work of the Party’s members form the backbone of the NPP and will be pivotal in rebuilding and repositioning the Party for future electoral success.

This according to him stems from their defeat in the 2024 election as a ruling party.

In an interview on Asempa FM Ekosii Sen, JFK as he is popularly known disclosed he was dealing with a lot due to the electoral outcome.

But amidst his struggles, he looks up to God as he still cannot understand why the NPP lost and are yet to come to terms with it.

The committee would engage with party stakeholders and the general public to identify the factors and circumstances that led to the loss.

It will also examine the need for constitutional amendments and restructuring of the party’s internal decision-making processes, particularly regarding the election of presidential and parliamentary candidates, as well as party executives.

This assurance was given by the Volta Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Comrade Mawutor Agbavitor, in response to concerns raised by party members and traditional leaders in the region.

In a statement issued by the chairman, he acknowledged the apprehensions expressed by the region’s chiefs and party faithful regarding their share of national appointments.

He reaffirmed that the NDC leadership is committed to rewarding the loyalty and contributions of the Volta Region, which remains a stronghold for the party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I want to make it clear that the Volta Region will be considered for appointments in the new NDC administration without fail,” Comrade Agbavitor stated emphatically.

Acknowledging Volta’s unwavering loyalty

The Volta Region has been pivotal to the NDC’s electoral success, delivering over 90% of the votes in the 2024 general elections.

The region achieved a clean sweep of all 18 parliamentary seats, including the strategic recapture of Hohoe. Additionally, the NPP’s influence in the region was reduced by 47%, significantly contributing to President Mahama’s emphatic victory.

“The President is fully aware of our unwavering loyalty and hard work. Our meaningful contributions shall be rewarded accordingly,” Agbavitor assured.

Call for restraint and unity

Despite the anticipation for appointments, Chairman Agbavitor appealed for patience and understanding among party members. He urged the rank and file of the NDC in the Volta Region to moderate their expectations while leadership works to ensure fair representation.

“While we look forward to other opportunities in appointments, I urge the rank and file of our party to exercise some restraint and be considerate in our expectations,” he advised.

Commitment to Volta’s progress

The Volta NDC leadership reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the interests of the region within the broader framework of national development. Chairman Agbavitor assured the people of continued advocacy to secure their rightful place in governance.

The statement underscores the NDC’s recognition of the Volta Region as a bastion of support and promises a collaborative approach to fulfilling campaign pledges.

About the NDC in Volta region

The NDC remains the dominant political force in the Volta Region, often referred to as the party’s “world bank” due to its consistent electoral support.

The region’s loyalty has been instrumental in securing victories in national elections, cementing its strategic importance in the party’s governance and policy agenda.

Mahama risked his life to lure Burkina Faso’s leader to accept civilian gov’t – Security analyst https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-risked-his-life-to-lure-burkina-fasos-leader-to-accept-civilian-govt-security-analyst/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 13:59:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491273 Francis Ahovi, a Security analyst and Executive Secretary of Global Security for Africa Research and Good Governance (GLOSARGG), has shared his perspective on President John Mahama’s decision to allow Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the military leader of Burkina Faso, to attend his swearing-in ceremony.

Ahovi believes that Mahama took a significant risk with his image by hosting Traoré, considering the military leader was seen carrying a side firearm during the event.

Despite the controversy surrounding Traoré’s appearance, Ahovi explained that while carrying a firearm at such an event is generally against security protocols, it may have been a strategic gesture between the two leaders to promote a goal.

He suggested that Mahama’s actions were part of an effort to engage Traoré in peaceful negotiations and to encourage the acceptance of civilian rule in Burkina Faso, as well as the country’s potential re-entry into ECOWAS.

Ahovi highlighted Mahama’s willingness to take risks for the sake of peace-building, stating that Mahama believes in using negotiation to bring about change.

He further emphasized that the president’s approach, though controversial, could lead to positive outcomes, including the eventual removal of military rule in Burkina Faso.

According to Ahovi, Mahama’s actions also demonstrate Ghana’s broader foreign policy strategy of building peaceful relationships, regardless of the political nature of the leaders involved.

He underscored the importance of Ghana maintaining strong ties with Burkina Faso, especially given the shared interests between the two countries, such as the Volta Lake, and their mutual need for economic and security cooperation.

Ahovi further suggested that this incident underscores Mahama’s strategic decision to risk his own image and reputation in order to encourage a peaceful transition in Burkina Faso.

He pointed out that while some people may not understand Mahama’s decision, it represents his approach to engaging with world leaders, even those who are seen as controversial, to build relationships that foster peace.

“Before you can change someone’s behaviour, you cannot remain distant from them. You have to use all methods, including negotiations, so I think Mahama’s acceptance of Traoré on that podium – though many may not understand it – is a strategy he has used to encourage Traoré to accept civilian government, even at the risk of his safety,” said Ahovi.

He stressed that Mahama’s willingness to engage with military leaders is part of a broader peace-building strategy, which involves bringing different parties to the table to resolve conflicts and promote stability in the region. Ahovi also praised Mahama for his courage in engaging with Traoré, emphasizing that this could ultimately lead to a positive change in Burkina Faso’s political landscape.

In conclusion, Ahovi reiterated that Mahama’s efforts are focused on fostering harmony between Ghana and its neighbors, including Burkina Faso. He emphasized that despite the differences in political systems, it is crucial for countries in the region to collaborate and leverage each other’s resources to strengthen their economies and security, as well as uphold good governance.

“The relationship must continue, because if we are in harmony, we can leverage each other’s knowledge, resources, and everything we can put together to strengthen our nation’s economy and security, especially in terms of upholding good governance,” he concluded.

Our agents took an aptitude test ahead of 2024 election- NDC Chairman https://www.adomonline.com/our-agents-took-an-aptitude-test-ahead-of-2024-election-ndc-chairman/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 12:40:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491224 The Eastern Regional National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Dr Mark-Oliver Kevor has detailed some strategies including an exam that counted for their victory in the 2024 election.

According to him, the party agents as part of preparations wrote an aptitude test ahead of the elections.

He said after the examinations, all those who passed were taken through training for at least four times before the election was due.

In an interview on Adom FM Burning Issues, Dr Kevor admitted that in the past, some of their agents were weak and lacked understanding of the electoral processes.

This he said led the party down in so many instances and to change the narrative,  the party hierarchy adopted the exam structure.

“Going into the 2024 election, there were a number of measures we put in place which included conducting exams for all our agents. We set a certain criterial which was that, whoever wanted to be our agent should at least have HND certificate,” he explained.

He added that all those who failed the exams were disqualified and once a person is disqualified, he or she has no chance to re-apply.

They then moved on to recruit new people to go through same processes to fill in the gap to reach the number the party needed.

“The pink sheet that we see is very complicated and I think this thing we did enlightened our agents to resist any attempt by electoral officers to manipulates figures this was why we did so well in some regions people never expected NDC could have such votes.

“At some polling stations, the Electoral Commission’s Officers told us, our agents assisted them in the tabulation of the results on the pink sheet,” Dr Kevor said.

Ablekuma North: Why did you retrieve your goodies if you won? – NPP’s Akua Afriyie quizzed https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-why-did-you-retrieve-your-goodies-if-you-won-npps-akua-afriyie-quizzed/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 11:05:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491165 The Ablekuma North National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, has said her opponent, New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate Akua Afriyie, is aware she lost the 2024 election.

In an interview on Dwaso Nsem, Ewurabena alleged that Nana Akua’s defeat caused her to retrieve items she had distributed to constituents ahead of the December 7 election.

According to her, Nana Akua would not have taken such action if she had truly won the election as she claims.

“Someone who claims not to have lost—immediately after the declaration was made—you went back asking people to return items you shared, accusing them of not voting for you,” she stated.

Ewurabena further alleged that Akua Afriyie feels entitled, hence her refusal to concede defeat despite clearly losing.

Insisting that her opponent is playing manipulative games, Ewurabena Aubynn described the election period as one marred by aggression and underhand tactics.

According to Ewurabena, Nana Akua never respected the NDC in the constituency because she never anticipated they could win the seat.

This posture, Ewurabena said, has made it difficult for the former MP to accept defeat in the tightly contested election.

“You see, you never respected and had no regard for us. You considered us as nobodies, but we were not worried. But the Lord Himself, who crowns kings, made us victorious.

This time around, the majority of voters in Ablekuma North voted for change, for development, and they voted massively for Ewurabena Aubynn,” she asserted.

Ewurabena made this statement on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem as tension continues to flare in the constituency over the parliamentary election results.

Although the Electoral Commission (EC) is yet to officially declare a winner due to ongoing disputes, both candidates are claiming victory.

Ablekuma North: I’ll never agree to a re-run – Akua Afriyie to NDC [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-ill-never-agree-to-a-re-run-akua-afriyie-to-ndc-audio/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 10:25:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491149 New Patriotic Party(NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Afriyie has expressed her strong opposition to any plans by the Electoral Commission(EC) to re-run three outstanding polling stations.

Nana Akua has asserted that she has won the election per results from all pink sheets from the polling stations in her possession.

“I have all my 281 pink sheets presented to the EC. The NDC went to make photocopies to change the figures and they were requesting for a re-run, claiming the three outstanding polling stations are their strongholds and there should be a re-run but I will never agree today or tomorrow. After all the money I have spent?” she stated.

In an interview on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, the former MP accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn of inciting supporters to cause mayhem in the constituency.

However, she said the NPP will resist every attempt by the NDC to divide the constituents or subvert the will of the people.

The re-collation of the Ablekuma North results have been delayed for the past days oas tension has been running high.

The constituency is yet to have the winner of the parliamentary seat in the December 7, election declared following another chaotic scene at the Electoral Commission (EC) office.

Ewurabena Aubynn has accused Akua Afriyie, of playing manipulative games to hold on to power but will be fiercely resisted.

Amidst the unending confusion, the Returning Officer, Vincent Obeng, has withdrawn from the collation process and asked the EC to find a new person.

He cited the disagreement and other challenges that have marred and delayed the process.

NPP electoral area coordinators call for suspension of Kpando constituency executives https://www.adomonline.com/npp-electoral-area-coordinators-call-for-suspension-of-kpando-constituency-executives/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 08:22:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491108 Some electoral area coordinators of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Kpando Constituency of the Volta region are calling for the suspension of the constituency executives for alleged misappropriation of election logistics and funds.

According to them, items and money provided by the headquarters were not distributed equitably leading to the party’s abysmal performance in the 2024 general election.

Addressing the press in Kpando, spokesperson for the coordinators, Lawson Awudi Gadri said the continuous stay in office of the executives would be detrimental to the development and electoral fortunes of the NPP in Kpando.

“We demand the immediate suspension of the current constituency executives, specifically the constituency chairman Mr Fia Legacy Eric, secretary Dapaah Eric, and organizer Gallant Beli.
The continuous stay in office of these officers is a threat to the survival of the NPP in Kpando”, he said.

He also implored the national executives to conduct a thorough investigation into the deployment of polling agents on election day and the distribution of funds to the agents.

Mr. Gadri further called on the national hierarchy of the party to impress on the leadership of the NPP in the Kpando constituency including the parliamentary candidate and municipal chief executive to make available detailed accounts of the distribution of party logistics and funds.

“We equally call upon the national leadership of the NPP to impress upon our Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Mr. Geoffrey Kojo Badasu, the Presiding Member of the Municipal Assembly Mrs. Ofori Atta Setorwu, and the Parliamentary Candidate of the party in the just-ended general elections, Mrs. Oklu Antoinette to provide a full and transparent account of all expenditures related to election day activities,” he said.

He asserted that the call for accountability would help restore faith among the angered party members who are disappointed in the party’s performance at the constituency and regional levels.

“Their loud silence and refusal to talk about issues is unacceptable. We cannot afford to see the political fortunes of our party dwindle further due to mismanagement, arrogance, and abuse of power by few in leadership positions in this Constituency”, he said.

The NPP recorded a significant drop in votes in the 2024 general elections in the Kpando constituency. It polled 2,211 of total votes against 3,682 in 2020.

Mr. Gadri lamented there was a shortfall of polling agents when only two were deployed instead of the mandatory 6.

He also added that these agents were selected without the consultation of electoral coordinators and were assigned to stations where their names were not on electoral rolls, resulting in some agents not being able to cast their votes due to distance.

He also mentioned the lack of coordination in implementing the “Go Out To Vote” policy, aimed at urging electorates to participate in the general elections.

Mr. Gadri added that ‘Gotv’ coordinators were empowered to overshadow electoral area coordinators while funds
provided for the operations of the policy “were either not made available to mobilizers or mismanaged by coordinators on D-day.”

He said that polling agents were multitasked as they were appointed as Gotv mobilizers and deployed away from where they registered as voters.

He outlined that the polling agents were not fed well which affected the delivery of their mandates on the election day.

“Meals served on the D-day were poor in terms of quality and quantity. Instead of three meals for the day, some polling stations had only breakfast at 11 in the morning, and the rest were served breakfast and lunch No supper was prepared for agents”, he lamented.

Mr. Gadri also indicated that funds meant for electoral area coordinators were never released during the election, explaining that the unfortunate incident affected the effective mobilization of the coordinators.

Musah Superior writes: We will hold Mahama to his campaign promises https://www.adomonline.com/musah-superior-writes-we-will-hold-mahama-to-his-campaign-promises/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 08:12:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491101 This is yet another new beginning for our country. Unbelievably so. My party, the NPP has shamefully exited government and the NDC just took over.

I have painfully come to terms with it. I respect the decision of the Ghanaian people and congratulate Ghanaians for a peaceful election and steady democracy.

JM is now the President. NADAA is a former President.

DMB couldn’t make it. He will someday. DMB’s peaceful and patriotic nature give us hope for the future. His vision remains instructively engrossing and persuasive.

I have some few suggestions for the President and ex-President as they assume their new roles.

Mr President, please do not carry a special chair around. Do not order chiefs to stand up and greet you. This doesn’t show respect to the people.

Mr President, we will hold your feet to the fire to fulfil all the OUTRAGEOUS promises you made during the campaign. You will be held to every statement you made.

Within the first hundred days of your government, you MUST scrap E-levy, COVID levy, 10% levy on betting, emissions levy, and import duty on vehicles and equipment imported into the country for industrial and agricultural purposes.

We expect you to appoint only 60 ministers to run your government. You will be constantly reminded to implement the ‘No-Academic-Fee’ policy for all first-year students in public tertiary institutions: universities, colleges of education, nursing training institutions and constitute the leanest government under the fourth republic in the first 90 days in office.

These were your key campaign promises. We will not accept excuses for non-fulfilment of these promises. And don’t be rude to us when we come making demands for excellence.

Mr President, let First Lady, Lordina Mahama understand that we voted for you and have the right to say it to your face when you fail us.

It is our constitutional right to criticise your government, your actions and inactions and we will do so fiercely. We will condemn and describe your leadership and government in adjectives that may hurt her if you become the opposite of what you campaigned for or against.

Former 1st lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo got it all wrong with her outburst when her husband’s government was described as the worst government in Ghana’s history. I disagree though.

We said Mahama was incompetent. Didn’t we? Highly critical language is allowed in a vibrant democracy. What should not be tolerated are insulting and abusive comments.

Mr former President, retire peacefully, be a statesman, be like JAK, do not seek to control our party because we will not allow you to do so.

Mr former President, the rumour in town is that you said you have your guys for President and Veep for 2028.

I pray it is untrue because we will not allow any imposition from you. You will not have your way.

It has to be the party’s way. In fact, it will be an extremely poor way to  handle your retirement. Please, avoid controversies and enjoy the rest of your life in tranquility.

God bless our country.

I will be decisive, swift in my actions – Mahama assures https://www.adomonline.com/i-will-be-decisive-swift-in-my-actions-mahama-assures/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 07:27:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491088 President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to take immediate and decisive steps to improve Ghana’s economic situation.

In his inaugural speech after being sworn in as the country’s new President, Mahama acknowledged the challenging circumstances Ghana is facing, stressing the need for urgent action to stabilize the economy and improve the lives of Ghanaians.

He outlined his initial focus on four key areas: economic restoration and stabilization of the macroeconomic environment, enhancing the business and investment climate, implementing governance and constitutional reforms, and strengthening accountability while fighting corruption.

“The circumstances we find ourselves in are indeed dire, and even so, I’ll be decisive and swift in my actions,” President Mahama said.

Mr. Mahama courted the support of Ghanaians to “reset” the country and deliver on his promises to the people.

He also called for a renewed mindset, attitudes, and behaviors to help build a better nation for all.

“We need a reset with the faith we have in our country and our leadership. We need a reset with the faith we have in our institutions.

“We need a reset with our faith in our dear nation, Ghana, and by that, I mean in all of us, because all of us are Ghana. You are Ghana, and I am Ghana.

“All of you seated here today, Ghanaian citizens, you are Ghana. The people who are with you or near you, as you watch this on television in your homes or listen on the radio or follow on social media, are what we call Ghana.

“I ask that we enter into the covenant with the Ghana we all love and the good people of Ghana who make up this dear nation… And I ask that you envision a Ghana that you want to live in, a Ghana that you want to leave behind to your children and your grandchildren,” President Mahama urged.

The President also pledged to lead an inclusive government, ensuring that all segments of the population are empowered and strengthened.

He reaffirmed his commitment to implementing policies that empower women and create equal opportunities for the youth, regardless of their backgrounds.

President Mahama said that his administration would focus on opening doors of opportunity for all, ensuring fairness and inclusion in governance.

“Together, we will galvanize our efforts to create a society where every Ghanaian can dream, believe, and achieve without any restraints.

“My administration, along with my Vice President, Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, will prioritize inclusivity, accountability, and innovation, forging pathways that will lead to the upliftment of all our citizens,” he pledged.

The former MP’s claim comes amidst the re-collation of disputed results.

“We have 281 polling stations in Ablekuma North. It was left with 62, and by the grace of God, the truth will stand.”

“I appreciate the justice system allowing us to collate the results, and I am firm in my stance. I want to put it on record that I will fight till the end because I know I won,” she stated confidently, “she vowed while speaking to journalists at the Electoral Commission (EC) office on Wednesday.”

Nana Akua Afriyie stressed that she had secured copies of all pink sheets from the polling stations, and they point to her resounding victory.

“I have all my 281 pink sheets scanned. I ensured this was done promptly, even before the gentleman arrived and disrupted the collation process by tearing materials from the Electoral Commission,” she said.

With only three polling stations outstanding, the aspirant expressed optimism that the odds are in her favor.

“Gradually, we are left with three polling stations. By the grace of God, I am leading comfortably, and that is where the fear lies,” she remarked, hinting at her opponents’ concerns about her apparent lead.

Meanwhile, the Returning Officer, Vincent Obeng, has withdrawn from the collation process and asked the EC to find a new person.

He cited the disagreement and other challenges that have marred and delayed the process.

Mr. Obeng explained that results from four out of seven polling stations had already been collated, leaving just three unaccounted for.

NDC supporters are safeguarding state properties, not looting them – Mustapha Gbande https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-supporters-are-safeguarding-state-properties-not-looting-them-mustapha-gbande/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 07:05:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491077 Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has justified the actions of rampaging individuals linked to the party who are vandalizing and attacking state properties.

Mr. Gbande has stated that the NDC supporters are only protecting state properties and not looting, as purported.

In an interview on Accra-based Citi FM, he emphasized the NDC’s commitment to peace and collaboration with law enforcement agencies to maintain calm.

“The young people of this country are determined to change the narrative, where government property and funds are stolen with impunity,” Mr. Gbande stated.

“It is unfortunate, but I think we should appreciate those who are sacrificing to preserve and protect state property,” he said.

He further contended that the allegations of theft were unwarranted.

“If they were stealing and taking these assets home, that would be a different matter,” he remarked.

“However, if they are moving to protect state assets from being taken away by government officials, then it is a situation that the party has recognized and is addressing,” he added.

Mr. Gbande assured that the NDC has taken the matter seriously and was actively engaging with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to restore calm.

Additionally, he said the NDC was engaging with individuals from the immediate past government to help bring stability.

“We are dealing with this in a manner that ensures the protection of state assets and upholds the rule of law,” he assured.

I’m done with Ablekuma North, EC should find a new person – Returning officer https://www.adomonline.com/im-done-with-ablekuma-north-ec-should-find-a-new-person-returning-officer/ Thu, 09 Jan 2025 06:29:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491052 The Electoral Commission (EC) Returning Officer for the Ablekuma North constituency, Vincent Obeng, has announced his decision to step down from the ongoing collation of parliamentary results, citing frustrations encountered during the process.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, January 8, Mr. Obeng disclosed that out of seven polling stations, results from four had been successfully collated, leaving three outstanding.

He explained that difficulties arose due to the inability of presiding officers to authenticate the statement of poll and the declaration forms.

“I hope you have all seen what is going on. Yesterday, January 7, we were left with seven polling stations to go. We came today, and we have been able to collate results from four out of the seven.

“So, we’re left with three more. We brought our presiding officers here—two came, but they couldn’t authenticate the statement of poll and declaration forms. One said she can’t come. So those are the three left,” he said.

Expressing frustration, Mr. Obeng added, “It’s so unfortunate for me to make this statement, but I’m done with Ablekuma North. The EC should find a new returning officer to continue their work.”

In response, the EC’s Director of Training, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, expressed regret over Mr. Obeng’s remarks, attributing them to frustration. He reassured the public that the Commission would address the issue and make efforts to bring Mr. Obeng back to complete the process.

The collation process for Ablekuma North has been fraught with tension. Earlier, a scuffle erupted over the inclusion of a disputed pink sheet, further delaying proceedings.

A Presiding Officer, Nathaniel Klimsman Avumeh, denied authenticating figures from his polling station, complicating the collation process.

Tensions escalated when a party official slammed the table of EC officials, triggering chaos among opposing party members. The situation briefly devolved into physical altercations before police officers intervened to restore order.

We’ve the personnel capable of dealing with looming ‘dumsor’ – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/weve-the-personnel-capable-of-dealing-with-looming-dumsor-mahama/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 18:07:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490994 President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that Ghana has the personnel capable of dealing with the looming power crisis commonly known as ‘dumsor’.

According to him, though the situation has come as a surprise, there was the need for urgent measures to address it.

Mr Mahama made these remarks in a meeting with a delegation from the World Bank on Wednesday.

President Mahama who expressed shock at the severity of the crisis emphasized the need for urgent measures to avert it.

“The transition has taken place, it’s been smooth and cordial. But there are few surprises that have come up in respect of the energy sector, and some aspects of government decisions over the seven years.

“But Ghana has the human resources to deal with the situation and turn things around as quickly as possible,” he stated.

Mahama’s call follows concerns raised by Yapei-Kusawgu MP, John Jinapor, over a looming power crisis while accusing the erstwhile Akufo-Addo led government of failing to purchase fuel.

Mr Jinapor at Mr Mahama’s inauguration on January 7 revealed that Ghana’s fuel reserves are critically low, with only five hours of supply remaining.

Meanwhile, the Institute for Energy Security (IES) urged President Mahama to act swiftly to avert the possibility of a dumsor.

The chaos at the Electoral Commission’s (EC) office on Wednesday was triggered by the inclusion of a disputed pink sheet, which delayed the process.

This occurred after the Presiding Officer for one of the polling stations in Ablekuma North, Nathaniel Klimsman Avumeh, denied authenticating figures from his polling station ahead of a subsequent collation.

Tensions flared up as a party official slammed the table of the EC officials, sparking chaos that led to a physical altercation.

Police officers intervened to prevent further disruptions.

The EC suspended the collation process three days ago, citing challenges in working with results from 20 outstanding polling stations.

The process, which resumed today, January 8, 2025, was expected to be concluded; however, it was marred by concerns from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over issues of result authentication.

Why Akufo-Addo calls me Johnny – Mahama reflects on rivalry, respect, and history https://www.adomonline.com/why-akufo-addo-calls-me-johnny-mahama-reflects-on-rivalry-respect-and-history/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 07:02:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2490602 Newly sworn-in President, John Mahama, delivered a heartfelt and reflective inaugural address on January 7 at Independence Square, marking his historic return to the presidency.

Among the many themes he touched on, his warm acknowledgement of outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo stood out, particularly the anecdote of being persistently called “Johnny” by his political rival.

“The Only One Who Calls Me Johnny”

“Nana and I began our national political careers in Parliament in the same year, 1996.

He has always greeted me with warmth, a firm handshake, and a smile,” President Mahama shared, adding, “He is, perhaps, the only person in my life who has persistently chosen to call me Johnny.”

Mahama’s revelation drew smiles and applause from the crowd as he reflected on the unique camaraderie and rivalry he has shared with Akufo-Addo over decades.

“While we belonged to opposing political parties, we shared a sense of mutual respect,” he said, stating that their shared journey is a testament to the enduring strength of Ghana’s democracy.

A Rivalry for the Ages

The two leaders have faced each other three times in national elections, creating one of the most storied political rivalries in Ghana’s history.

Reflecting on their journey, Mahama said, “In those early days, we probably could not have imagined that destiny would bring us to the leadership of our respective parties and that we would have to face off three separate times as we each vied for the highest office in the land.”

Despite the fierce battles at the polls, Mahama highlighted their mutual understanding of the greater goal: serving the people of Ghana.

“He and I both understood on that day, as I am sure we do today, that it is the people of Ghana we serve,” he affirmed.

A Legacy of Maturity and Democracy

Mahama praised Ghana’s democratic resilience, describing his inauguration as a celebration of the nation’s growth.

“Today, we are making a different kind of history, one that speaks to our maturity as a democracy, a nation of citizens enfranchised with the authority to determine their political future at the polls,” he said.

The significance of their shared transitions—Mahama as outgoing President in 2017 and now as incoming President in 2025—was not lost on him.

“It seems fitting that I share this stage and this unique, historical distinction with Nana Akufo-Addo twice,” he remarked.

A Final Farewell with Gratitude

In a touching moment, Mahama acknowledged that this would likely be their final encounter under such circumstances.

“Nana, as this will be our final meeting under such circumstances, and as I look back on the journey we have travelled—two much younger men who entered Parliament together—I have to say that you have, without exception, been a worthy opponent,” he said, to applause from the audience.

John Mahama’s lighthearted comment about their physical appearances in the early days added a personal touch.

“I with a full head of black hair and you with the same bald head and round eye-glasses,” he quipped, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Honouring Ghana’s Democratic Legacy

Mahama’s speech also reflected on Ghana’s democratic journey, recalling the nation’s first transition in 1993 and subsequent milestones.

“Thirty-two years ago, on January 7th, Ghana made its first and most successful democratic transition—a reset,” he said, emphasizing the importance of the democratic processes that have shaped the country.

By highlighting his relationship with Akufo-Addo, Mahama underscored the importance of unity and respect in politics.

His reflections painted a picture of rivalry tempered by mutual respect, leaving Ghanaians with a message of hope for continued democratic growth.

Speaking as the special guest of honour at the swearing-in ceremony held at the Independence Square in Accra, President Tinubu highlighted the enduring bond between the two nations and called for a shared commitment to regional progress.

“My dear brother, I am here to walk with you. You know you can count on Nigeria’s support at any given time. You call on me,” Tinubu said, addressing President Mahama.

“We are your brothers and sisters. We shall always be there for you. May your administration be a profound source of progress for you, Ghanaians, and the entire region.”

Strengthening Bonds for Shared Prosperity

President Tinubu expressed confidence in President Mahama’s leadership, emphasising that his administration would enhance Ghana-Nigeria relations and contribute to regional integration.

“I have no doubt that your administration will bring about positive change and progress,” Tinubu said. “Your accession to power marks a new and invigorating momentum in pursuing sub-regional integration and progress.”

He urged both countries to focus on addressing critical challenges such as poverty, youth unemployment, and instability, envisioning a brighter future for West Africa.

“With laser focus, we can tackle our people’s most pressing problems… May Ghana’s democracy continue to grow stronger. May progress and prosperity be your portion.”

A Celebration of African Democracy

The Nigerian leader hailed the inauguration as a testament to Africa’s democratic maturity, commending Ghana for another peaceful transition of power.

“This is a celebration of African democracy,” Tinubu declared.

“We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves. We will lift our nations out of poverty and build strong and resilient economies for our people.”

He described the occasion as a moment of pride for Ghana, Africa, and its diaspora, calling for unity across the continent.

“The sun is out, and the sky may be blue, but I see today a black star rising, rising high in the African sky. This black star shines over this nation and its rays spread across this continent with a sense of shared history, hope, compassion, unity, and devotion to our common wealth.”

A Call for Unity and Peace

President Tinubu reminded Africans of the importance of solidarity, dialogue, and mutual respect.

“That star reminds us always to strive and work together, bond together, even when we disagree,” he said.

“We must choose the path of peaceful dialogue. Never can we do harm to our brothers, nor can we permit any outsider to disrupt our bonds of brotherhood.”

Tinubu concluded his remarks with a hopeful outlook, urging both nations to work hand in hand for a future of opportunity and prosperity.

This decision resolves the long-standing disagreements between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the election results in the constituency.

After an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) on Tuesday, 31 December, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa announced that the electoral process for Dome-Kwabenya had been completed and finalised.

Below is full text of the EC chair’s explanation to what happened in Dome Kwabenya Constituency:

Good afternoon to all of you, our media partners and members of the NDC and particularly from the Dome-Kwanenya Constituency. We would like to welcome all of you warmly. We thank the good Lord for making it possible for us to witness the last day of the year.

Indeed to him be all the glory, great things he has done and greater things he will do. Our purpose here this afternoon is simple. It is to provide you, the citizens of Ghana, with an update on the parliamentary election in Dome-Kwanenya Constituency.

As you may be aware, on the night of the election, some leaders of political parties asked their supporters to go into our collation centres and this led to chaos and some confusion.

In Dome-Kwanenya, the constituency was no exception. The collation centre was besieged by parties supporters who brought collation there to a halt. In the process, pink sheets, results collation forms and other materials were destroyed and collation was not completed on that day.

Since then, as a Commission, we tried to ensure the completion of the collation and as you may bear witness, we held the first exercise to complete the collation in the Dome-Kwanenya Constituency on the 21st of December.

Unfortunately, although we came a long way, we were not able to complete it because there were three polling station pink sheets outstanding.

In our second attempt to complete the process, we again brought together the parties, basically the NDC and the NPP with their agents to assist us to bring the collation to a completion to enable us to declare the outcome of the election.

That collation was held on the 28th, just this past Saturday, the 28th of December. At that meeting, the NDC was able to provide two pink sheets which was confirmed by our staff at the constituency.

Unfortunately, there was a missing pink sheet, one pink sheet for the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre and both the NDC and the NPP did not have paint sheets.

It’s important to note that the NPP did not have any paint sheets, any of the three paint sheets at all, but after scrutinising the pink sheets presented by the NDC, they were found to be legitimate and they tied with what we had also found. The missing link was this polling station sheet which none of the parties had and it was for the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre. It’s important to note that in the attempt to re-collate, our officer had brought a pink sheet for the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre and it bore, on the face of it, training.

It had written on the face of it the word ‘training’ and it was a presidential pink sheet. And so, in the view of the Commission, a training pink sheet had no business at the polling station on election day and upon scrutinising it, the Commission was of the view that it could not be accepted. It is important to note that the parties also did not have any evidence.

Both NDC and NPP did not have the pink sheets to confirm whether what was written on the training sheet was legitimate and was accurate. And so in the view of the Commission and in the interest of fairness, the Commission felt that it was proper to re-run the election for that particular polling station to ensure fairness.

We have always maintained as a Commission that our interest is not to make anybody a president and this is something we have said across board to all our officers.

Our interest is to conduct credible and transparent elections that are fair, that ensure that the will of the people as expressed at the polls is upheld.

And so once none of the parties had any pink sheets to confirm and they both said they didn’t have it, we agreed at that meeting that we should have a re-run. It’s important to note that at that meeting, the NDC agreed that we had to have a re-run.

The NPP was of the view that because their agents had left the centre, they had not taken part in the collation and therefore they wanted the Commission to start the collation afresh.

We explained to them that the Commission had received all the pink sheets and I think that was 369, I believe it was 369 polling stations, and we of course checked that against what had been done by the returning officer and it was accurate.

It was just that one missing pink sheet and that is why we took the decision to have a re-run. And this as I said was agreed to by the NDC. Since then we have not rested on our oars and we’ve tried to unravel how we came by this.

In all of this, as you may be aware, we of course had reached out to the returning officer and our district officer but we did not have any explanation for the use of the training sheet. What they had said was that the presiding officer realised at the point of filling the form that what she had was a presidential pink sheet and therefore she used a presidential training sheet. It didn’t add up.

It was not convincing. And so two days ago as a Commission, in our investigation we had a light-bulb moment. Why don’t we go to the ground? Rather than deal with collation agents at the collation centre, why don’t we identify, look out for the agents, the polling agents at the Abokobi Women’s Training Centre? And so we took steps. We reached out to the parties and we were able to do that. The Presiding Officer was out of town.

We were able to also reach her and ask her to return to Accra to answer a few questions.

This morning we met with her and she explained to us how she arrived at the training sheet. She actually arrived at using the pink sheet for presidential training with training and boss on it.

It’s important to note that she did not have this training sheet with her on election day. And it’s also important to note that contrary to what is being peddled in the news, that training sheet was not signed by party agents. The question has been asked that, oh it’s the EC’s sheet, why are they not using it? Training sheets have no place at the polling station and that’s why we are not using it.

It was not a parliamentary training sheet, it was presidential one and it was not signed by any of the party agents. What she has explained is that, as I mentioned, she recognised that she did not have the parliamentary training sheet, she had the presidential. So she tallied everything on paper, she had both agents of the NPP and the NDC confirm the figure and they decided they agreed to go to the collation centre to obtain a copy of the parliamentary training sheet.

Once there, they were informed to go to the district office. On their way there, unfortunately they were accosted by some thugs who threatened their lives and in the process she fled. The good news is that she had the sheet in her bag but she fled and she says that the agents also disserted and they all left.

And so none of them had the results. She had it on a sheet. I’m happy to note, however, that the parties, although we did not have a pink sheet for parliamentary, signed and completed and each party also had their own tally cards and on that tally sheet they had the number of persons who came through. They had all the details, including the results, the total for each political party. We have received that from the NDC.

Although they are not present here, the presiding officer, some days after the election, reached out to the party agents and the agent for the NDC sent his copy and we’ve seen that; we have the evidence and their communication.

And the tally is that of what our presiding officer had on a training sheet. We have also met with the NDC agent and we’ve also taken a record of his tally sheet which also contains the number of people who came to the centre and the votes for each of the parties and the tally.

And that has enabled us to arrive at the completion today. So today, the Commission is pleased to note that it has brought proceedings and collations at the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency to a close.

It has gone full circle and we are convinced without a shadow of doubt that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls.

So as mentioned, ours is not to make anybody president, it is to ensure that our outcomes and our processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld. So we are happy to note that we have come full circle today and the outcome of that election has been confirmed, has been legitimate, has been the choice of the people.

I think that the lesson in it is that our processes must be allowed to work.

I know that the candidates have been through quite a bit, but the processes must be allowed to work. I’d like to also put on record that we don’t rest on our oars yet and we’ve burnt the midnight oil to ensure that the right thing is done.

And we’re pleased that we had that flash, that light-bulb moment to go down, to drill down to the ground and that has brought out the truth and the truth will be upheld. So thank you very much for your time this afternoon.

Let’s not be arrogant because we’ve won power – Zanetor Rawlings to NDC https://www.adomonline.com/lets-not-be-arrogant-because-weve-won-power-zanetor-rawlings-to-ndc/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 14:57:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489068 Korle Klottey Member of Parliament(MP), Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has cautioned members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against arrogance following their victory in the 2024 election.

Dr Zanetor has urged the rank and file of the party to prioritise its good image and principles of the revolution, which played a crucial role in Ghana’s democracy.

The daughter of the late NDC founder, Jerry John Rawlings, was speaking at the 43rd anniversary of the December 31st Revolution in Accra on Tuesday.

“We must not allow arrogance, pride, and hubris to fill our hearts because of this victory, as that will be the beginning of our downfall.

“We must maintain humility, we must maintain integrity, and we must uphold the principles on which the revolution was founded, which finally gave birth to this Fourth Republic that we are now striving to restore,” she said.

The MP asserted that, but for the strong foundation his late father and the NDC laid, Ghana would have been plunged into chaos.

“My dear comrades, if the foundation on which this Fourth Republic was built was not strong enough, believe me, Ghana would have descended into chaos by now,” she noted.

She further urged members of the incoming government to uphold and maintain this legacy.

“We have a legacy that we can hold on to, and it is something that we must return to,” she said.

In a New Year message, Chairman Obia Nye Obia, as he is popularly known stated he takes responsibility for the electoral loss in the constituency.

He acknowledged that, electoral defeat is not a pleasant experience for any political party.

However, despite the NPP’s loss in both the parliamentary and presidential elections, they must be able to rise above their differences and bounce back stronger.

“A lot has happened and our expectations were not met but we should let go of our pain and disappointment. We should let go of the past and focus on the present and future because there is a lot more to be done,” he encouraged.

The Chairman noted that, people may have made unpleasant remarks amidst their pain but it was time to cease fire and focus on rebuilding.

“We must review what went wrong and also focus on a way to build our party again. A lot of people have served and it is our time now. Let us be focused and stay united,” he stated.

Chairman Addae added that, in due course, the constituency executives will meet to review lessons from the election to guide them in the future.

The NPP in Okaikwei North was poised to snatch the seat from the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) Theresa Awuni.

With incumbent Akuapem North MP, Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei switching to lead the NPP in Okaikwei North, the party was convinced the grounds were fertile in their favour.

But at the end of the December 7 polls, Theresa Awuni garnered 28,363 votes, significantly surpassing Ama Dokua’s 20,627 votes.

“If we care for one another, we will enter the 2028 elections with stronger strategies and renewed energy. We must avoid being divided by greed,” he said.

He urged party members who would be appointed in the next government to serve in the best interest of all, and not to use their positions to intimidate those who may not be appointed.

“Yes, we have won the election to form the next government after January 7, 2025. However, not everyone here will receive an appointment. Those who do must not use their positions to intimidate others. You must demonstrate leadership and care for your fellow party members,” he said.

COP (retired) Boakye made these comments during the Ashanti regional zone two campaign team’s victory party in Kumasi over the weekend.

He commended the party members for their contributions during the campaign season, stating, “I would like to take this opportunity to commend you all for your efforts.”

He added, “I can assure you that your contributions will be rewarded by President-elect John Dramani Mahama when he assumes office with his excellent proposed policies.”

Boakye also advised members of the next government to support the incoming president, John Mahama, to ensure successful governance.

“At the moment, we walk with our heads held high because we have defeated the NPP in the 2024 election – a victory we are all sharing due to our hard work. Let’s use the same energy to support our elected president and appointees in bringing about positive change, which will ensure even greater rewards from Ghanaians in the 2028 elections.”

High Court sets date to deliver verdict on NPP’s mandamus application https://www.adomonline.com/high-court-sets-date-to-deliver-verdict-on-npps-mandamus-application/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 12:32:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489008 The High Court in Accra has set Wednesday, January 1, 2025, to deliver its verdict on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) mandamus application against the Electoral Commission (EC).

The decision on Tuesday, December 31, follows the Supreme Court’s order for re-hearing of the application by a new High Court judge.

The verdict on the case is therefore expected to be given by the court presided over by Justice Forson Baah Agyepong.

In court on Tuesday, the National Democratic Congress(NDC) lawyers and its parliamentary candidates in the four disputed constituencies argued that the mandamus application filed by the NPP is effectively an election petition disguised as a procedural request.

Lawyer Tameklo, contended that allegations such as intimidation and duress—cited by the EC as reasons for nullifying the election results—are substantive matters that fall under Sections 16 and 20 of PNDC Law 284 and require evidence to be resolved in court.

He asserted that, the case filed constitutes an election petition rather than a straightforward mandamus application.

However, Gary Nimako, counsel for the NPP parliamentary candidates, dismissed the NDC’s objection as misconceived.

He maintained that the NPP’s application is properly before the court and does not violate procedural rules.

The Counsel for the NDC and its four parliamentary candidates, Edudzi Tameklo, argued that the mandamus application is effectively an election petition disguised as a mandamus application.

He emphasised that, issues such as intimidation and duress—cited by the EC as reasons for nullifying the election results—are substantive matters that fall under Sections 16 and 20 of PNDC Law 284 and must be proven through evidence in court.

In his oral submissions, Mr. Tameklo contended that the case filed is an election petition and not a mere mandamus application.

Lawyer for the NPP Parliamentary Candidates, Gary Nimako stated that the objection raised by the NDC is misconceived.

The presiding judge, Justice Forson Agyapong is yet to make a determination on the preliminary legal objection raised.

Dome-Kwabenya: Abokobi residents ready for rerun of disputed polling station https://www.adomonline.com/dome-kwabenya-abokobi-residents-ready-for-rerun-of-disputed-polling-station/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 10:40:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488946 Residents of Abokobi in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency of the Greater Accra region have expressed their readiness to participate in a rerun of the parliamentary election at the Abokobi Women’s Development Center 2 polling station.

This follows the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to nullify results from the polling station after errors were identified.

On Saturday, 28 December, the EC announced that the results from the polling station had been invalidated because they were recorded on an incorrect sheet instead of the required pink sheet.

A rerun has been scheduled to determine the final outcome of the parliamentary race, which remains undecided.

During a visit to the constituency, residents voiced their determination to vote again, with some declaring their support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Elikplim Akurugu.

“The town has made its decision. We want Elikplim Akurugu as our MP, and that’s it. Even if there will be a re-election, the people of Dome-Kwabenya have already chosen their MP,” one resident stated.

Another resident criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Mike Oquaye Jnr, and urged him to concede defeat, stating, “Since 1996, the NPP has been winning this seat, but we’ve seen no change. We are ready for the rerun, and we believe it’s time for a change.”

The EC’s decision has sparked mixed reactions from the two major political parties. The NDC has strongly opposed the rerun, arguing that the annulment was unwarranted. Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the NDC, Dr Tanko Rashid Computer, described the EC’s move as unnecessary interference.

In contrast, the NPP has accused the NDC of disrupting the collation process, which they claim led to the irregularities.

Director of Elections and Research for the NPP, Gary Evans Nimako defended the need for the rerun, stating that it would ensure transparency and fairness.

Pollster Musah Dankwah has predicted that the rerun will not significantly affect the outcome, insisting that the NDC is poised to win the seat.

“Our exit polls showed Elikplim Akurugu with 54% support compared to Mike Oquaye Jnr.’s 46%. Even before the elections, our surveys placed her in the lead,” Mr Dankwah explained. “It is unlikely that the NPP will retain the seat, it will flip to the NDC.”

Stop being crybabies – Benjamin Quashie to NPP over disputed parliamentary seats https://www.adomonline.com/stop-being-crybabies-benjamin-quashie-to-npp-over-disputed-parliamentary-seats/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 10:34:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488956 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders Chair for South Africa, Benjamin Kofi Quashie, has called on the New Patriotic Party to stop being petty over the disputed parliamentary seats controversy.

His comments come amid the NPP’s allegations against the NDC following the party’s loss in both the presidential and parliamentary seats in the just-ended general elections, as well as their petition to the EC over the delayed parliamentary results of 12 constituencies.

In a conversation with Joy Prime’s KMJ on the Prime Morning Show, Mr. Quashie stated that the NPP’s reactions are a result of them being affected by the results.

He reminisced about how the NDC faced a similar situation during the 2016 and 2020 elections.

He said the NPP are more concerned about themselves than the country as a whole.

He told the NPP to accept the results peacefully and fairly. He emphasized on the fact that there is video evidence of EC officials declaring polling station results, and there is no need for the NPP to petition the commission.

“It’s something in the blood of the NPP that you feel that what’s right for you, you can talk about it, and what is right for the other person, they cannot talk about it. For 8 years, we’ve been under this impunity. For 8 years as a country, we’ve endured very arrogant leadership.

“What I’m saying is that the right thing has been done; results have been declared. There are videos of returning officers declaring those results. When they rushed to court, which they have always been doing, the judge even refused a play of those videos for him to know that the results have been declared. That didn’t happen.”

“All I’m saying is that let’s stop being crybabies when it affects us, thinking that we’re special kids, and then when it doesn’t affect us, it is nothing that should go on.”

When asked whether he thinks the NPP is being petty, Mr. Quashie responded, “Very petty,” suggesting that the NPP needs to conduct a proper assessment within the party because he feels they have yet to learn their lessons from the loss in the elections.

He furthered that if the NPP continues to tread the blame-game tangent and does not desist from the complaints and allegations, he does not foresee a better future for the party.

In addition, the chair of the SA Council of Elders mentioned that the NDC needs a viable opposition to help develop the country as a democratic state.

“So, if they wouldn’t get down from their high horses and make sure that we do things as a country, I don’t think that we’re going anywhere,” Mr. Quashie reiterated.

However, he believes that the will of the people stands, despite the court’s ruling and the EC’s adherence to all constitutional instruments governing elections.

EC didn’t need court order to re-collate results in disputed constituencies – Atta Akyea https://www.adomonline.com/ec-didnt-need-court-order-to-re-collate-results-in-disputed-constituencies-atta-akyea/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 10:32:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488926 The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has asserted that the Electoral Commission (EC) does not require a court order to re-collate results in disputed constituencies.

His statement follows the Supreme Court’s December 27 ruling, which overturned an earlier High Court decision directing the EC to re-collate results in certain constituencies due to disputes.

The ruling has sparked fresh debate about the EC’s authority to independently address discrepancies in election results.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV, Atta Akyea emphasized that the EC has a constitutional mandate to re-collate results in constituencies where irregularities or fraud are suspected. He highlighted the EC’s autonomy in reviewing parliamentary election outcomes to uphold credibility and accuracy.

“I do not see the need for anyone to seek a mandamus order when the EC itself has the power to review results. The EC, in fulfilling its constitutional duties, can act upon evidence that someone has benefited from electoral fraud or irregularities,” Atta Akyea explained.

He further elaborated on scenarios where discrepancies could necessitate a re-collation, stating, “If certain polling stations were excluded during the collation process and the results have not been gazetted, the EC has every right to rectify such errors without requiring a court order. For example, what happens if the declaration is based on an error and lacks the full complement of pink sheets?”

When questioned about whether the EC should have waited for a court application before undertaking re-collation, Atta Akyea firmly disagreed.

“I believe it is unnecessary to wait for a mandamus order,” he said. “Parliament should be free from controversy. No one should benefit from electoral fraud to secure a seat in the chamber. How can anyone justify sitting in Parliament under such circumstances? Issues like duress and errors in computation undermine the integrity of the election process.”

Obuasi East MP-elect drags EC to court over second collation and declaration https://www.adomonline.com/obuasi-east-mp-elect-drags-ec-to-court-over-second-collation-and-declaration/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 09:25:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488878 The Accra High Court is set to hear a judicial review application brought by Samuel Aboagye, the declared winner of the Obuasi East parliamentary election, who is challenging the Electoral Commission of Ghana’s (EC) actions involving a second collation and declaration of results.

The suit, filed against the EC and naming Patrick Boakye Yiadom as an interested party, raises concerns about alleged irregularities in the process.

Samuel Aboagye, represented by his lawyer, Elikplim L. Agbemava, is requesting the court to:
• Declare the EC’s second collation and declaration of results on December 21, 2024, null and void.
• Mandate the EC to gazette the results collated on December 8, 2024, which he claims declared him the winner based on Form 1D, signed by all parties involved.
• Issue an injunction preventing the EC from publishing any results contrary to those on the original Form 1D.
• Bar Patrick Boakye Yiadom from holding himself out as the elected Member of Parliament for Obuasi East.

The applicant contends that the Public Elections Regulations, 2020 (C.I. 127) do not permit a second collation or declaration after the official announcement of results.

He further argues that Form 1D, used to summarise election results, constitutes a binding agreement between the candidates and cannot be altered without their consent.

Aboagye maintains that he was initially declared the winner of the December 7, 2024 election and that any dissatisfied party should follow legal procedures to challenge the results.

The General Jurisdiction Court Two will tomorrow hear the matter.

Speaker has no discretion in swearing-in of MPs – Samson Lardy https://www.adomonline.com/speaker-has-no-discretion-in-swearing-in-of-mps-samson-lardy/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 09:10:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488790 Journalist and private legal practitioner, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has shed light on Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin’s decision not to swear in parliamentary candidates whose election results were annulled by the Supreme Court.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr Anyenini clarified that the swearing-in process is rooted in law, with the Speaker relying on the Electoral Commission’s (EC) gazetted list of MPs-elect.

He explained that the Speaker’s role in swearing in MPs is ceremonial, leaving no room for discretion.

“The Speaker swears in the newly-elected members of Parliament,” Mr Anyenini stated, and added .“But we also know that by the operation of law, a duly elected MP is one whom the Electoral Commission, by its sole authority, has gazetted as elected. If you are not gazetted, you will not be sworn in. You cannot be admitted into the House, and any attempt to participate in its business is a criminal offence that could lead to arrest.”

On the issue of annulled results, Speaker Alban Bagbin declared that parliamentary candidates whose results were nullified by the Supreme Court on 27 December 2024 would not be sworn in on 6 January 2025. “The decision of the Supreme Court renders their declarations invalid and unlawful,” Bagbin affirmed.

The Supreme Court annulled the re-collated results in four constituencies – Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, and Tema Central all in the Greater Accra region, as well as Techiman South in the Bono East region, citing irregularities in the EC’s re-collation process. The apex court ruled that the procedure lacked the transparency and fairness required by the law.

This ruling followed a challenge by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against a High Court directive issued on 20th December 2024, which instructed the EC to re-collate results in nine disputed constituencies. The NDC argued that the directive was procedurally flawed, and the Supreme Court upheld their position.

Mr Anyenini emphasised that the Speaker must act strictly within the boundaries of the law, relying solely on the EC’s gazetted list.

“The Speaker’s job is not to conduct elections or determine who has been properly elected; his role is to swear in those the EC has gazetted, unless there is a court order to the contrary,” he noted.

Bagbin’s decision, Mr Anyenini said, must firmly be rooted in legal principles. “The Speaker’s role in swearing-in members is ceremonial. His job is not to determine who has been properly elected or to contest the Electoral Commission’s gazetted list,” Mr Anyenini explained.

“If a candidate is not gazetted, they are not admitted into Parliament and cannot participate in its proceedings. Attempting to do so would amount to a criminal offence, and such a person could be arrested.”

He further clarified that in cases where there is a legal challenge, the courts have the sole authority to resolve disputes. “If there is an injunction restraining a person gazetted by the EC from holding themselves as MP-elect, the Speaker is bound by law to respect that order. The individual cannot be sworn in or participate in parliamentary proceedings until the court lifts such an order,” Mr Anyenini stated.

I will contest for NPP national chairman position in 2026 – Sammy Crabbe https://www.adomonline.com/i-will-contest-for-npp-national-chairman-position-in-2026-sammy-crabbe/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 09:09:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488851 A former Second Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Crabbe has called for significant constitutional reforms within the NPP, arguing that its current structure fails to adequately address the welfare of its members and stakeholders.

In an interview with Joy News aired on December 27, 2024, Sammy Crabbe criticised the lack of a “duty of care” in the NPP and said there was no provision in its constitution to address that.

He announced his intention to contest the party’s national chairmanship in 2026.

“It’s a problem when an organisation has 28 aims and objectives, yet none addresses how it will reward or take care of its members and stakeholders,” Mr Crabbe said.

He emphasised the need for a comprehensive re-engineering of the party’s constitution, citing the intense sacrifices made by members, including financial investments and personal tolls, which often go unacknowledged.

Mr Crabbe argued that more needs to be done to ensure the welfare of members, suggesting that apathy among the rank and file stems from feelings of neglect.

“There’s apathy because people feel sidelined after contributing so much. It doesn’t make sense that decisions affecting everyone are made by one man, his wife, and his family,” Mr Crabbe said.

Sammy Crabbe revealed plans to convene a constitutional amendment conference if elected chairman, adding that the recent challenges within the party have underscored the urgency of his proposals.

“People now see the reason why these changes must be made. The apathy we’ve seen in the party is a direct result of members feeling sidelined and unappreciated,” he noted.

Mr Crabbe who was suspended in 2015 over allegations of misconduct and subsequently removed from office, expressed confidence in his campaign, saying his groundwork is progressing well.

He acknowledged that not everyone may agree with his ideas but stressed the importance of constructive criticism.

“It’s not necessary for everyone to like me. What matters is putting forward ideas that can help the party evolve. I welcome criticism as long as it focuses on what I propose,” Mr Crabbe stated.

The National Democratic Congress(NDC) Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Mahdi Jibril made the call on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, stating Mr Ocquaye was fighting a losing battle.

This comes in the wake of plans by the Electoral Commission(EC) to re-run the election in the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre polling station in the constituency.

According to Mahdi Jibril, there is nothing that can turn the election in favour of the NPP, expressing confidence that the NDC will win no matter what.

“The NDC’s candidate is already leading with 165 votes but there is one outstanding polling.

“In a wide vision, the NPP will not understand because they want to fight a losing battle. Mike Ocquaye Jnr must understand that will not win and could have saved the nation money and maintain peace,” he stated.

With the EC yet to set a date for the election, Mr Jabril has expressed hope that the NPP and its candidate, Muke Ocquaye will concede defeat and withdraw.

Dome Kwabenya rerun: EC setting a dangerous precedent – Prof. Kwaku Azar https://www.adomonline.com/dome-kwabenya-rerun-ec-setting-a-dangerous-precedent-prof-kwaku-azar/ Sun, 29 Dec 2024 10:25:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488498 US-based Ghanaian lawyer, Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, has raised serious concerns over the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to order a rerun of the election at one polling station in the Dome Kwabenya Constituency.

According to him, this decision undermines the fundamental principle that the will of the people is paramount, a principle consistently upheld by courts, including in the landmark case of Akufo-Addo et al. v. Mahama et al.

Professor Asare explained, “The ultimate purpose of election results is to reflect the will of the electorate. If the results declared on the training sheet are accurate and verifiable, rejecting them solely because of the medium used is akin to throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”

He cautioned that such actions risk disenfranchising voters and eroding the core of democratic governance.

Expressing further concern, Professor Asare criticized the EC’s reliance on procedural grounds to nullify results, particularly at the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station, where training sheets were used instead of the official statement of poll.

He described this decision as prioritizing form over substance, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent.

“The commission’s rejection of the declaration on a procedural technicality, without examining the substantive accuracy of the results, strains at a gnat and swallows a camel,” he noted. “While adherence to proper forms is important for electoral integrity, outright rejection without verification undermines public confidence in the process.”

He argued that the EC could have adopted a more equitable approach by verifying the results and re-declaring them using the correct forms, which would have preserved procedural integrity while respecting the electorate’s trust. Instead, the decision appears to favor procedural rigidity over transparency and fairness.

Citing the Akan proverb, “When the rhythm of the drum changes, the dance steps must adapt,” Professor Asare emphasized the need for flexibility in electoral processes to address human error without compromising the will of the voters. “Rejecting declarations on procedural errors without exploring alternatives creates the impression that technical missteps, no matter how minor, can override the sovereign will of the people,” he said.

He also highlighted the inherent complexity of elections, where procedural errors are not entirely avoidable, noting that safeguards exist to verify results. “The voters fulfilled their democratic duty in good faith. Their voices should not be disregarded because an EC official failed to follow proper procedures. Penalizing voters for mistakes beyond their control violates principles of fairness and justice.”

Professor Asare concluded by urging the EC to strike a balance between strict procedural adherence and fairness. “A decision that ignores options for verification and correction fails to achieve this balance,” he stressed.

“Da Yie,” he wrote in his Facebook post.

Nothing has changed; we’ll return to court for collation and declaration – NPP https://www.adomonline.com/nothing-has-changed-well-return-to-court-for-collation-and-declaration-npp/ Sun, 29 Dec 2024 08:54:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488444 The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako Marfo has said the Supreme Court’s annulment of results from four constituencies in the 2024 election does not create any significant change.

Addressing journalists in court on Friday, Mr Nimako also reassured NPP supporters that there is no cause for alarm.

“Nothing has changed. The Supreme Court’s decision only ensures procedural fairness. We’ll return to the High Court on Tuesday to continue the process. This is not a loss for us. It’s simply part of the legal process. We are confident the High Court will make the necessary order for collation and declaration,” he said.

Mr Nimako who is also the lawyer for the embattled NPP MPs-elect is confident the party will return to court on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, and secure victory.

“The court said these four constituencies should go back to the High Court. This is to allow the NDC to file their response and for the court to issue another order for the Electoral Commission (EC) to proceed with collation and declaration,” Mr Nimako explained.

The Supreme Court on Friday annulled re-collated results for Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Techiman South, and Ablekuma North.

The re-collation which took place on Saturday, December 21, 2024, was in line with a High Court Order which directed the Electoral Commission(EC) to carry out the exercise.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) argued that it was not heard during the proceedings leading to that ruling.

The Apex Court ruled in favour of the NDC, directing the High Court to rehear the matter on Tuesday but with a different judge.

NDC rejects EC’s re-run of polling station in Dome-Kwabenya https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-rejects-ecs-re-run-of-polling-station-in-dome-kwabenya/ Sat, 28 Dec 2024 16:29:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488383 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has opposed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to re-run elections at a polling station in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency.

The Director of Training at the EC, Dr Serebour Quaicoe announced the decision after the declaration of the parliamentary results was suspended for the third time on Saturday, December 27 amidst chaos.

The re-run is due to the absence of a pink sheet for the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station.

However, the NDC is insisting that its parliamentary candidate, Elikplim Akurugu, secured victory and was declared the winner in the election held on December 7.

The NDC Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Dr Rashid Tanko Computer expressed their opposition in a media briefing after the EC’s announcement.

“There was a difference of 1,154 votes, and so if today we are having a problem with one polling station, that polling station should be taken out. The voter population for that polling station is 689, so when you deduct 689 from 1,154, your guess is as good as mine,” he stated confidently.

Dr Tanko-Computer further criticised the EC for what he described as errors in their calculations and handling of the situation.

“These people have issues with arithmetic, and so we will do the calculation for them. They should hold their horses because Elikplim has won the election, and we will not accept their so-called rerun,” he added.

Declaration of Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary results suspended for the 3rd time https://www.adomonline.com/declaration-of-dome-kwabenya-parliamentary-results-suspended-for-the-3rd-time/ Sat, 28 Dec 2024 14:56:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488345 The Electoral Commission (EC) has once again suspended the final declaration of the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary results after a third attempt.

On Saturday December , the EC attempted to collate results from three polling stations but succeeded in collating only two. The third polling station’s results remain unresolved due to persistent challenges.

This was after the collation took a dramatic turn as disagreements between political parties and the EC threatened to derail the process.

At the heart of the contention were conflicting claims over the number of polling stations requiring re-collation and the validity of earlier declarations.

The dispute began when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Mike Oquaye Jnr, raised objections to the ongoing collation process, JoyNews’ James Avedzi reported.

According to the MP aspirant, there were discrepancies regarding the number of polling stations left to be collated before the chaos that marred the earlier process.

“In the dying hours of the collation in the constituency, just before the chaos erupted, there were 88 polling stations left to be collated,” the reporter said.

He said Mr Oquaye argued that the NPP was not present for the collation of 85 out of these 88 polling stations, which, according to him, invalidated the subsequent declaration made in their absence.

This objection was met with resistance from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which maintained that only three polling stations were outstanding.

The NDC insisted that the process should focus solely on these three polling stations and that the rest of the results were valid as declared.

In the end, the EC suspended the declaration over the outstanding polling station – the Abokobi Women’s Development Centre 2 polling station.

EC has plunged Ghana into a constitutional crisis – Former MP https://www.adomonline.com/ec-has-plunged-ghana-into-a-constitutional-crisis-former-mp/ Sat, 28 Dec 2024 14:09:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488290 A former Tamale Central MP, Inusah Fuseini, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of creating a constitutional crisis in Ghana through its handling of disputed parliamentary election results.

Speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile on Monday, December 28, the private legal practitioner expressed concern over the EC’s decision to comply with a High Court order for the re-collation of results in nine constituencies, describing it as both unnecessary and procedurally flawed.

“The Electoral Commission has led us into a situation where we are now struggling as a country to extricate ourselves,” Fuseini stated.

He stated that the EC’s actions have exacerbated tensions and undermined the legal framework that governs electoral disputes.

His comments come after the Supreme Court quashed results in the re-collation of votes Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

The apex court added that the order does not affect Ahafo Ano North and Nsawam Adoagyiri results.

According to the court, the trial judge violated the right to a hearing of the NDC Parliamentary Candidates when they applied to the High Court.

Mr Fuseini referenced Constitutional Instrument (CI) 127, which details the steps aggrieved candidates must take to challenge election results.

He argued that the EC’s rush to re-collate the disputed results contravened these provisions.

“It appears to me that we ought not to have been in any rush at all into re-collating the results of the disputed constituencies,” he said.

The former legislator suggested that the situation could have been resolved more effectively if the EC had waited for the election results to be gazetted, allowing aggrieved parties to pursue their cases through the courts.

“Which of these issues could not have been resolved if we had simply waited for the results to be gazetted and the aggrieved party takes the matter to court?” he questioned.

Fuseini also pointed out the inherent conflict in the EC’s role in this matter, accusing the Commission of acting as an interested party rather than an impartial arbiter.

“We have been put into a constitutional crisis today because the EC appears to be the interested party in this case,” he remarked.

Fuseini’s critique highlighted what he perceives as the EC’s failure to adhere to its constitutional mandate, a misstep that he believes has thrown Ghana’s democratic processes into disarray.

This follows a Supreme Court order on Friday which quashed the High Court’s earlier order for the Electoral Commission(EC) to re-collate results from six constituencies.

The Apex court upheld the re-collation in Nsawam Adoagyiri and Ahafo Ano North constituencies while Tema Central, Okaikwei Central, Techiman South and Ablekuma North were quashed.

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s ruling, the NDC’s Deputy Director of Elections and IT Dr Rashid Tanko-Computer said the party remains resolute in pursuing the outstanding seats.

Addressing the media, Dr Tanko-Computer said the ruling was a victory for democracy.

Re-collation: Confusion erupts over Dome Kwabenya parliamentary results https://www.adomonline.com/re-collation-confusion-erupts-over-dome-kwabenya-parliamentary-results/ Sat, 28 Dec 2024 13:08:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2488310 Confusion has marred the re-collation exercise of the Dome Kwabenya 2024 parliamentary election results.

The confusion on Saturday morning between the National Democratic Congress(NDC) and the New Patriotic Party(NPP) was over pink sheets.

Adom News’ Ernest Akowuah Gyamerah Twum reported that, the NPP parliamentary candidate, Mike Oquaye Junior, raised objections to the process.

Mr Ocquaye demanded a re-collation for 88 polling stations but the NDC insisted that there were only three outstanding polling centres and only that should be re-collated.

The Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the Free Zones Authority argued that, there were discrepancies regarding the number of polling stations left to be collated before the chaos that marred the earlier process.

Mr Oquaye asserted that the NPP was not present for the collation of results for the three polling stations, invalidating the subsequent declaration, hence his demands.

This objection was met with resistance from the NDC, which maintained that only three polling stations were outstanding.

The NDC insisted that, the process should focus solely on these three polling stations and that the rest of the results were valid as declared.

As tensions flared, a meeting was convened to reach a consensus. Following deliberations, the EC representative addressed the parties, announcing a compromise.
