The nominees appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson reaffirmed the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) commitment to reintroducing road tolls to generate revenue for road maintenance.

Speaking during his vetting, Dr. Forson emphasized that the NDC has always supported road toll collection and intends to restore it.

Mr. Jinapor responded to questions from the committee, outlining a six-month timeline to develop a framework for private sector involvement in Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) reforms. He justified the need for expert-driven solutions and a competitive tendering process to involve private entities.

His vetting also highlighted his plan to tackle the $3 billion energy sector debt while ensuring efficiency and sustainability in power distribution.

Dr. Dominic Ayine defended the legality of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative. He described it as a constitutionally grounded effort to promote accountability in public office.

“ORAL is constitutional. ORAL is legal. In fact, the fact that it is a non-legal body doesn’t mean that it is illegal. There is a distinction between non-legality and illegality,” he stated.

The unusual seating arrangement comes on the heels of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four vacant parliamentary seats on October 17, which has sparked intense debate over which party holds the majority.

In a surprise move, NPP MPs, led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, staged a walkout, citing a desire to avoid confrontation and maintain peace.

The Effutu MP explained that, they were retreating to their offices to await directives from the Speaker on the way forward.

“We chose the path of peace rather than confronting our opponents to avoid chaos,” Afenyo-Markin stated, emphasizing Ghana’s reputation as a peaceful nation.

The NDC MPs, however, remained seated, occupying the majority side of the House.

The development has heightened tensions between the two parties, with supporters of the governing NPP gathering outside Parliament House.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin adjourned sitting in the House indefinitely amid vacant seats controversy.

2025 AFCONQ: Fans destroyed pitch panels after Ghana defeat due to their spoiled their bet – NSA chief https://www.adomonline.com/2025-afconq-fans-destroyed-pitch-panels-after-ghana-defeat-due-to-their-spoiled-their-bet-nsa-chief/ Fri, 06 Sep 2024 12:28:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2445163 The Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Alhaji Abdul Majeed Bawa, has provided insight into the motivations behind the fan violence at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday night.

Following the Black Stars’ surprising 1-0 loss to Angola in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, enraged fans rushed onto the field, causing damage to the stadium’s panels and throwing objects.

In an interview on Asempa FM‘s Sports Nite, Alhaji Abdul Majeed Bawa attributed the destruction to young fans whose bets were ruined by the defeat.

“They destroyed, they threw missiles and all manner of things onto the pitch. That one too is it caused by NSA? They destroyed the pitch panels. And I believe these things are happening to the young guys who are addicted to betting. Honestly, that’s my feeling because if you see all those people who did that thing, they are all young guys.

“Throwing missiles because we lost. I believe they would not have done that if Ghana had won. After the tension subsided, you asked them and they were saying they disappointed them and they lost. Not that Ghana has lost oh but they lost a bet,” Alhaji Abdul Majeed Bawa shared.

Ghana’s loss to Angola has cast a shadow over their AFCON qualifying campaign. The Black Stars will need to regroup and prepare for their next match against Niger on Monday, September 9.

In response to the damage, the NSA has announced that the Baba Yara Stadium will be closed for one month for renovation work.

Nanka Bruce school on the verge of collapse; authorities call for immediate intervention [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/nanka-bruce-school-on-the-verge-of-collapse-authorities-call-for-immediate-intervention-photos/ Wed, 05 Jun 2024 12:26:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2404867 The Dr. F. V. Nanka Bruce Junior High School (JHS) school building in Korle Gonno, a suburb of the Greater Accra region is in a state of near collapse as students are exposed to the risk of weak structures.

The one-storey building, situated along the beach, is frequently battered by the sea breeze, which has exacerbated structural issues over time.

Currently, the building has developed significant cracks in its walls, pillars, and columns. The walls are detaching from the pillars, and the plaster is peeling off, exposing iron rods.

Parts of the ceiling are also falling, further endangering the occupants and leaving them at the mercy of heavy rainfall and sunlight.

The last major repair on the school building was conducted in July 2019, following an announcement by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to fix roofs that had been ripped off by a rainstorm.

Despite these repairs, the building remains in a critical state, with no substantial improvements made.

School authorities have repeatedly brought this worrying situation to the attention of the Metro Directorate of the Ghana Education Service through numerous letters and reminders.

However, no action has been taken to address the urgent safety concerns.

The current state of the building poses a significant danger to pupils, teachers, and anyone in the vicinity.

Authorities are calling for immediate intervention to prevent any potential disaster and ensure the safety of all school community members.

Plastic takes over Jamestown beach [Photos + Video] https://www.adomonline.com/plastic-takes-over-jamestown-beach-photos-video/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 19:31:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2382403 The Jamestown beach in Accra was once a thriving fishing enclave but the narrative has changed as plastics have taken over the shores.

In 2023, data provided by the World Economic Forum showed that, Ghana produces 840 000 tonnes of plastic waste annually, but only a small portion was being recycled.

When the unrecycled waste finds its way into the ocean, it’s not only a problem for people but marine life.

On a visit to the Jamestown beach, Adomonline.com’s Joseph Odotei observed that, the shores have been covered with plastic waste.

Plastic materials at the beach has reached an alarming rate and would require immediate solutions.

With the constant manufacture and disposal of plastic materials, the environment has become a dumping ground for an alarming amount of plastic trash.

From microplastics to bigger plastic products like bottles and bags, these pollutants endanger marine life, the food chain, human health, and the delicate balance of our planet’s waters.

Addressing plastic waste and marine litter not only ensures the health of our seas, but also promotes a sustainable future for the environment and humanity.

Very soon, frustration will be written across the faces of fisherfolks if the problem is not given the needed attention.

This is because, they may soon be returning home with a bumper catch of plastics instead of their highly sought-after fishes.

Eid al-Fitr – which means “festival of the breaking of the fast” – is celebrated at the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting for many adults, as well as spiritual reflection and prayer.

Was the pledge to make Accra the cleanest city a reality or a fallacy? https://www.adomonline.com/was-the-pledge-to-make-accra-the-cleanest-city-a-reality-or-a-fallacy/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 15:09:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2378827 “By the end of the four years of my term in office as President, Accra will be the cleanest city in Africa.”

These were the words of President Akufo-Addo as he delivered his speech during his swearing-in ceremony on January 7, 2017.

For many years, the city of Accra has been infamous for its filth. Streets, markets and drains are adorned with filth. The bad sanitation in the city is a major contributor to perennial flooding that costs many their lives.

This promise therefore resonated with the public and gave many people hope that it was the right signal to citizens to keep their environment clean. To further show commitment and promote the agenda, a National Sanitation campaign and laid out a plan to attain the promise was launched.

Seven years down the line, the pledge is yet to see the light of day.

On a visit to part of Accra, Adomonline.com’s Joseph Odotei observed that, nothing has changed concerning sanitation issues under the incumbent government.

Gutters are still choked with refuse being dumped in the wrong places, despite promises that dustbins will be placed at vantage points.

Prime areas and iconic landmarks in Ghana’s capital are now engulfed with filth as they serve as dumping sites.

The development has left Ghanaians questioning whether President Akufo-Addo meant his pledge to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa, or if it was just mere political talk.

This further raises concerns about the launch of the Operation Clean Your Frontage and Let’s Make Accra Work initiative in 2022 which was being spearheaded by Immediate past Greater Accra-regional Minister, Henry Quartey.

The initiative aimed to encourage residents to routinely clean their homes and communities.

Promises were made to ensure that garbage dustbins would be placed at strategic locations to prevent people from littering indiscriminately, and cleanup exercises were planned to mobilize individuals and foster a sense of community involvement.

But today, it appears like there is a struggle to sustain momentum. People litter indiscriminately. There appears to be insufficient infrastructure to facilitate effective garbage management. There are insufficient trash collection and disposal systems.

This many believed would have somehow ensured the continuity of the National Sanitation Day under the previous administration, which was observed every first Saturday of the month.

Total solar eclipse sweeps through Mexico, Texas, New York, and beyond [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/total-solar-eclipse-sweeps-through-mexico-texas-new-york-and-beyond-photos/ Mon, 08 Apr 2024 22:07:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2378569 The highly anticipated total solar eclipse travelled from the Pacific coast of Mexico to Atlantic Canada on Monday, briefly ensconcing parts of Texas, the Midwest, upstate New York and New England in darkness as it made a more than 10,000-mile journey across North America—the first total eclipse to sweep through the U.S. in nearly seven years.

KEY FACTS

The total eclipse became visible near the Mexican city of Mazatlan at around 2:07 p.m. Eastern time, according to NASA, darkening the sky in the coastal city for a few minutes as the moon blocked out the sun’s rays.

The “path of totality”—or the area in which the sun will be completely obscured by the moon for roughly four minutes—passed over the U.S.-Mexico border less than 30 minutes later, and reached Cleveland at 3:15 p.m. Eastern, and Burlington, Vermont, around 3:27 p.m. Eastern.

While millions of Americans watched the eclipse, many had their view blocked by overcast skies, with moderate visibility from Texas to Ohio and New York, according to AccuWeather meteorologists, though viewers in northern Maine and New Hampshire, as well as Texas, had some of the best shots of the eclipse under clear skies.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

For stargazers who did stare directly at the sun without protective glasses, or using only sunglasses, experts advise speaking to a medical professional for potential effects from eclipse blindness (retinal burns from staring at the sun). While that blindness is often temporary, it can leave lasting effects, in addition to headaches, reduced visual acuity, light sensitivity and visual distortion people often experience after staring at the sun.

SURPRISING FACT

The eclipse also brought a slate of rare astronomical and visual phenomena, allowing stargazers to catch a rare glimpse of the sun’s atmosphere, a midday view of the so-called devil comet and an effect called double rings, resembling the last flash of a sunset before the sun is entirely blocked.

Stonebwoy left the crowd buzzing and yearning for more after putting on a spectacular immersive 10-song set performance at the fully-packed 20,000-capacity University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra to close out this year’s continental multi-sport event held in Ghana.

Running through songs such as “Manodzi,” “Kpokeke,” “Higher,” “Activate,” “Therapy,” “Overlord,” “Bawasaba,” “Apotheke,” and “Into the Future,” he brought his vibrant vibes and signature sound of afrobeats, reggae, and dancehall to the stadium, creating an unforgettable spectacle that thrilled fans at the stadium and those who watched from home.

The stadium’s energy surged twofold as he brought out his new collaborator ODUMODUBLVCK from Nigeria for the premiere performance of their unreleased single “Ekelebe.”

A household name across the African region and credited as the creator and driving force behind Afrodancehall’s ascent to global prominence, the multi-award-winning singer, songwriter, and performer has become a global phenomenon, entertaining colossal audiences in Africa, the United States, Europe, and beyond. While he has published massive global hits with “Into the Future,”  “Activate,” and “Shuga,”  as well as scoring success on bigger stages, his career took a major step up by playing to this substantial audience at the 2023 African Games closing ceremony.

Elsewhere, Stonebwoy was crowned the “Best African Dancehall Entertainer” at the recently concluded 41st International Reggae & World Music Awards 2024 held in Jamaica, just before his performance at the Africa Games closing ceremony.
