The mix-up began when the family repatriated what they believed to be Peace’s body from a South African mortuary.

Peace had been tragically killed in a shootout in South Africa and his body aired to Zimbabwe.

Family members had initially expressed doubts about the identity of the body upon its arrival. However, the hearse driver dismissed their concerns, insisting it was Peace’s body.

“People even joked with the driver that if it turned out not to be our relative, he would bear the costs. But the driver was adamant he knew him,” said Patience Waziwanhaka, Peace’s sister-in-law.

The truth came to light on the day of the burial when South African authorities informed the driver of the mix-up.

Two days after the burial, the Malawian man’s body was exhumed, and the remains, along with Peace’s clothes and burial items, were taken back to South Africa.

The family is now consulting traditional leaders to address the cultural and spiritual repercussions of the mix-up.

“We thought we had given our son a befitting send-off, only to learn it was someone else,” said Theresa Tafirei, Peace’s aunt. “We don’t know the impact this will have on both families.”

Village head Tinonesana Sithole criticized the decision not to conduct a body viewing, stating it could have prevented the tragedy.

The family is now working to repatriate Peace’s actual remains from Pretoria, South Africa, so they can lay him to rest properly.

“We just want our son’s remains back,” said Martha Mutowo, Peace’s aunt.

Referee sacked for failing to show up for match after being drugged by sex worker https://www.adomonline.com/referee-sacked-for-failing-to-show-up-for-match-after-being-drugged-by-sex-worker/ Wed, 11 Dec 2024 18:06:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2482498 A Mexican referee has been sacked from his role after failing to turn up to officiate a match in October, amid reports he had sustained injuries after being assaulted by a sex worker he had hired.

Referee Rosario Guadalupe Cardenas had been appointed to serve as the fourth official in a match between Monterrey and Tigres in the Apertura Tournament on October 19.

Mexico’s refereeing commission announced on the day of the match that Cardenas had been replaced due to a ‘medical reason’.

Cardenas was replaced in the role by Ismael Lopez, with Ximena Marquez Ruíz installed as the VAR official.

The organisation launched an internal investigation two days later, stating it would ‘clarify all the details related to this incident’.

Former Mexican referee Francisco Chacon later stated that Cardenas, 27, had failed to attend the match due to injuries sustained after being attacked by a sex worker he had hired.

‘It turns out that Mr. Rosario Cardenas decided to hire a companion one day before the game,’ said Chacon, who officiated international matches between 2009 and 2017.

‘He took her to his hotel where he was staying, and there he was drugged and assaulted, which is why he did not make it to his game.

‘That was the “medical reason”‘.

The Mexican refereeing commission confirmed Cardenas’ sacking on December 4 following the internal investigation.

The organisation did not provide further details around the circumstances, but deemed his conduct worthy of dismissal.

‘The Referees Commission reports that it completed a detailed internal investigation, which began on October 21, in order to clarify the details related to the incident in which referee Rosario Guadalupe Cárdenas was involved, on October 19, prior to the day 12 of the 2024 Apertura Tournament,’ a statement read.

‘In order to guarantee transparency and compliance with the corresponding protocols, this Commission informs that as a conclusion to the investigation it has decided to terminate the contract of the cited arbitrator for non-compliance with the Arbitration Rules.’

Mexican newspaper Record reported the official had been found to have violated the ‘ethical and professional values’ of Mexican Football Federation, with a source stating an investigation remains ongoing into the reports Cardenas had been assaulted by a sex worker.

‘We were informed that this matter went through the FMF’s legal department, which violated the internal regulations and the ethical and professional values of the FMF,’ a source told the newspaper.

‘I know that there is a legal issue going on, which is being processed, to determine whether or not that was the case with the referee.

‘But beyond that, Rosario was informed internally that for the organisation and the FMF itself the referee did not fulfill his responsibility due to indiscipline and that determined that they thank him.’

Cardenas had been yet to officiate in the Mexican top flight, but the official had worked his way through the refereeing ranks in recent years.

He had officiated at Under-20 and Under-23 level before refereeing matches in the second tier of Mexican football.

Woman who killed and ate cat in the US jailed https://www.adomonline.com/woman-who-killed-and-ate-cat-in-the-us-jailed/ Wed, 04 Dec 2024 08:05:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2478910 An Ohio woman has been sentenced to one year in jail after pleading guilty to a felony charge of animal cruelty for killing and eating a cat.

Allexis Ferrell, 27, appeared at Stark County Common Pleas Court on Monday, where Judge Frank Forchione condemned her actions, stating: “This is repulsive to me. I mean, that anyone would do this to an animal. And an animal’s like a child. I don’t know if you understand that or not.”

“You’ve embarrassed this county,” the judge added. “You’ve embarrassed this nation. More importantly, you’ve embarrassed yourself.”

The incident occurred in late August when police responded to an emergency call at a housing estate in Canton. A report indicated that Ferrell had killed the cat by “stomping its head then eating the cat.”

Officers arriving at the scene found Ferrell squatting next to the dead animal. Police told 3News she had blood on her feet and fur on her lips. Bodycam footage captured one officer asking: “Did you eat that cat? Did you eat it? No? Why’d you kill it then?”

Ferrell remained silent as officers contacted the Humane Society, with one officer remarking, “Will you call the Humane Society to see if they’ll come pick this cat up? It’s deceased.”

The case attracted widespread attention in September amidst a flurry of misinformation after former President Donald Trump falsely claimed Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating pets. Officials later clarified that Ferrell is not of Haitian descent, nor is her case connected to those claims.

“She is not an immigrant and was born in America,” authorities stated, seeking to dispel any connection to the controversial allegations.

Judge Forchione described Ferrell as presenting “quite a danger to our community,” expressing disbelief over her actions. “I can’t express the disappointment, shock, disgust that this crime has brought to me. I don’t know what could prompt anyone to want to eat a cat.”

The New York Post reported that Ferrell’s sentence will run concurrently with an 18-month term she is already serving for theft and child endangerment.

Telegram CEO offering free IVF to women willing to use his sperm to have a baby https://www.adomonline.com/telegram-ceo-offering-free-ivf-to-women-willing-to-use-his-sperm-to-have-a-baby/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 11:47:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2471454 The co-founder and CEO of Telegram, who took people by surprise with his claim that he has over a hundred “biological kids” in 12 countries, is making headlines again.

A Moscow-based clinic, Altravita, has claimed that the tech boss, who has fathered several children through sperm donation, is offering free IVF treatment to women willing to use his sperm.

The facility said that women wanting to undergo IVF treatment can use Pavel Durov’s donated sperm, but only if they meet certain requirements.

What does the clinic claim?

“We are happy to offer you a unique opportunity! Only in our clinic can you undergo IVF for free, using Pavel Durov’s sperm—one of the most famous and successful entrepreneurs of our time. This opportunity is one of a kind, and the number of slots is limited,” reads an announcement on the clinic’s official website.

It further states, “Pavel Durov is willing to finance all the IVF protocols that use his sperm. It is a very generous contribution to society from someone who wants to help those dreaming of becoming parents.” Reportedly, the Telegram boss shared a post about the clinic on his platform with a link to the website but didn’t mention anything about the free treatment.

What are the requirements?

According to the clinic, the maximum age of the participant should not exceed 37. Also, their “health condition should be satisfactory,” which will be determined based on the clinic’s “reproductologist’s medical report.”

The website claimed that only their “cryobank has the exclusive right to store and use the biomaterial of Pavel Durov.”

How did Pavel Durov become a sperm donor?

In his earlier post, Durov shared, “Fifteen years ago, a friend of mine approached me with a weird request. He said that he and his wife couldn’t have kids due to a fertility issue and asked me to donate sperm at a clinic for them to have a baby. I laughed my ass off before realizing he was dead serious.”

However, he later fulfilled their request and was told by a fertility clinic that he was a “high-quality donor material.” This incident led him to sign up as a sperm donor.

Woman stabs boyfriend after he greets another woman on the street https://www.adomonline.com/woman-stabs-boyfriend-after-he-greets-another-woman-on-the-street/ Fri, 01 Nov 2024 09:14:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2467050 A 23-year-old Argentinian man tragically lost his life at the hands of his jealous girlfriend who attacked him with a knife for simply greeting another woman on the street.

A little jealousy can actually be good for a relationship, but too much of it can be fatal! Take the tragic story of Mariano Grinspun, a 23-year-old man from González Catán, a city in Argentina’s Buenos Aires province, who was stabbed to death by his jealous girlfriend after greeting a former schoolmate on the street.

The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of October 21st, near the corner of Balboa and La Bastilla streets, in González Catán.

Grinspun and his girlfriend, Natacha Palavecino, were walking hand in hand when they ran into a woman who greeted Mariano and asked him how he was doing. The woman’s simple greeting was enough to drive the man’s girlfriend crazy, as she pulled out a hidden knife and attacked her.

It turns out that the woman who greeted Mariano Grinspun on that fateful morning was an old schoolmate of his, but that hardly mattered to his girlfriend. She just saw another woman who had the nerve to speak to her man and decided that she needed to pay with her life.

Palavecino reached for a hidden knife and slashed the woman, identified only as LC by Argentinian media, across the armpit.

The victim fell to the ground and managed to stop another stab attempt with her hand. She would have probably been killed if not for an unidentified man who managed to pull Palavecino off of her.

Unfortunately, Mariano Grinspun was not so lucky. After failing to kill the woman who had sparked her rage, Natacha Palavecino took it out on her boyfriend, stabbing him in the chest.

The couple argued for several minutes after, as shown by surveillance cameras in the area, during which time the victim collapsed to the ground several times.

At one point, he fails to get up and his 32-year-old girlfriend attacks him with her bare hands. Eyewitnesses called emergency services, but they could do nothing to save the man’s life.

An ongoing investigation has already revealed Natacha Palavecino’s violent history.

In 2021, she was convicted to one year in prison for stabbing a former boyfriend in the chest, and even Mariano himself had reported her to the police for threats and causing him physical injuries.

In July of last year, a restraining order was issued, forcing Natacha to avoid all contact with the victim. However, once the measure expired, he decided to give their relationship another chance.

32-year-old Palavecino risks spending many years in prison for the murder of her boyfriend and the attempted murder of the woman who simply greeted him on the street.

Influencers drown after rejecting life jackets to avoid ‘ruining their selfies’ https://www.adomonline.com/influencers-drown-after-rejecting-life-jackets-to-avoid-ruining-their-selfies/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 12:11:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2466089 Two influencers who refused to wear life jackets drowned when their boat was sunk by a huge wave after a yacht party in Brazil.

Victims Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim, 37, and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, 27, were found dead after their overcrowded boat sank off a stretch of coast known as the Devil’s Throat.

Police say the women died when their overloaded boat was swamped as it returned to the Brazilian coast as they left the party.

Sao Vincente police commissioner Marcos Alexandre Alfino says the influencers had refused to wear life jackets.

He said: “Some didn’t want to put them on because they were taking selfies. They said that they get in the way of their tanning.”

The revelation came after the boat’s skipper, not named by police, had given extensive interviews to police over the deaths.

The captain, one of five survivors, said he had been ordered to take six influencers to the shore despite his boat having a maximum capacity of five passengers.

So when the craft was hit by a huge wave, it was too heavy to ride it out and began to sink. The skipper told police he had tried desperately to save everyone.

Beatriz’s body was found first drifting out to sea and was recovered by Brazil’s Maritime Firefighters.

Aline was found dead a week later washed up on the coast of Itaquitanduva Beach.

Police are now trying to establish if their deaths were simply a tragic accident or could have been prevented.

Commissioner Alfino explained: “All this is being determined very calmly to conclude if the fatalities were based on recklessness or negligence.”

Man defecates in bedroom, burns wife’s clothes for refusing intimacy https://www.adomonline.com/man-defecates-in-bedroom-burns-wifes-clothes-for-refusing-intimacy/ Mon, 28 Oct 2024 12:42:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2465207 A Zimbabwean man left a courtroom stunned after admitting he had been urinating and defecating in his bedroom to protest his wife’s alleged denial of conjugal rights.

The unusual case came to light when Maclaren Nduri shared his frustration with the court, claiming his wife, Berita Mutero, had refused intimacy since she started working in Mbare—a change he suspects is linked to her alleged involvement with another man.

Nduri’s actions, which he described as retaliation for what he perceives as his wife’s    neglect, took a disturbing turn as Mutero disclosed additional allegations.

According to her, Nduri has not only been defecating in their bedroom but has also assaulted her and even resorted to burning her clothes in fits of rage over her rejection.

“I am tired of my husband’s behavior,” Mutero told the court, further noting that he sometimes uses a bucket to relieve himself and leaves it in the room for days.

The Magistrate presiding over the case, recommended that the couple seek professional marital counseling to address their issues.

74-year-old man dies during sex at movie house in East Legon https://www.adomonline.com/74-year-old-man-dies-during-sex-at-movie-house-in-east-legon/ Fri, 25 Oct 2024 20:37:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2464600 An Accra High Court has charged a 20-year-old interior decorator, Pearl Agbomadzi, with murder.

This is in connection with the death of a 74-year-old British national living in Ghana.

According to the prosecution, the deceased, John Scott Hughes, had invited Ms Agbomadzi to meet him at American House and subsequently took her to Philipo’s Movie House, a popular location in East Legon, where he booked a room for them.

The prosecution’s account states that, Mr Hughes and Ms Agbomadzi, whom they described as his girlfriend, watched pornography together and engaged in a consensual sexual encounter.

During the activity, Mr Hughes reportedly became unconscious and collapsed on the floor, causing Ms Agbomadzi to panic.

She then rushed to the reception area to seek assistance and informed the staff about Hughes’ condition.

The Police were called, and Hughes was subsequently transported to Legon Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The complainant in the matter is the wife of the deceased.

On October 24, counsel for the accused person, John Baptist Ayedze prayed for bail for his client who has since been in police custody.

The prosecution led by Assistant State Attorney Frederick Adu Gyamfi did not oppose the bail application.

Presiding Judge, Lydia Osei Marfo then granted a bail of GHS100,000 with a surety.

In her closing remarks, she urged older men to be cautious of their sexual lives and not go for younger women who she intimated can be hazardous due to the age difference.

Man who can’t stop sniffing neighbours’ shoes gets suspended prison sentence https://www.adomonline.com/man-who-cant-stop-sniffing-neighbours-shoes-gets-suspended-prison-sentence/ Thu, 24 Oct 2024 09:32:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2463900 A 28-year-old Greek man was recently convicted of causing a disturbance by repeatedly trespassing on his neighbours and smelling their shoes

The unnamed man was arrested on October 8th after one of his neighbours in Sindos, a small town about 15 kilometers (9 miles) west of Thessaloniki, spotted him in their yard just before dawn sniffing the shoes they had left outside to air.

This was not the man’s first time trespassing on private property for the same bizarre reason, so the neighbour called the police.

Upon hearing the 28-year-old man’s explanation and the testimony of one of the neighbours, the Single-Member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki issued a suspended sentence of one month in prison, with three years of probation.

“I do not know exactly how I came to do this act. I feel very ashamed and disappointed in myself. I can’t explain it. I will ask for support to see what is happening and not to make it worse,” the 28-year-old man told the Court, adding that he trespassed on his neighbour’s property three times in order to smell their shoes for reasons he couldn’t explain.

The accused acknowledged his guilt and apologised for his actions, adding that he never meant to harm anyone through his actions.

His neighbours confirmed that he never acted violently towards them, but they still felt bothered by his bizarre behaviour.

“I got upset and went to the police,” the neighbour who notified the police said in Court. “I was told to call 911 when I spotted him doing it. I stayed vigilant for three days and as soon as I saw him in the morning, I notified the police and he was arrested.

“We caught him in the act. He didn’t show any aggressive behaviour, he immediately understood what he was doing, he didn’t have any aggressive behaviour. When another neighbour asked him why he was doing it, he replied: ‘because it makes my life better’. I just want to help him and stop this act.”

The 60-year-old neighbour who filed the complaint against their young neighbour smelling their shoes told the Court that he had spotted the defendant three times on their property, adding that other neighbours had caught him sniffing their shoes over the last six months.

“I know it’s some kind of illness and I’m going to do everything to get well,” the man reportedly told the police officers who arrested him.

Man dies during ‘fortification’ ritual in his hometown https://www.adomonline.com/man-dies-during-fortification-ritual-in-his-hometown/ Wed, 23 Oct 2024 19:44:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2463670 An Onitsha-based businessman, Chikwado Eze, has tragically died during a ritual at Inyi in the Enugu State of Nigeria.

Eze, originally from Ugbaike community, had secured a visa for an overseas business trip and sought fortification from a native doctor to ensure success.

The native doctor instructed that Eze be buried alive for one and a half hours as part of the ritual.

On the day of the ritual, Eze, accompanied by his father Uwakwe, was buried in a grave for the specified time. However, when exhumed, instead of being fortified, Eze was weak and drenched in sweat.

Despite the native doctor’s attempts to revive him with incantations, Eze remained unresponsive and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident occurred after Eze was buried alive for one hour and thirty minutes (1 hour, 30 minutes).

Both the father and the native doctor have been arrested by the Police for interrogation.

Uwakwe, previously ostracized by the Ugbaike community for involvement in dangerous charms, denied forcing his son into the ritual, stating that Eze had already prepared everything before inviting him.

Nigeria’s Vanguard has reported that the Nigeria Police Command in Enugu State has confirmed the death of the young man.

In a statement by the police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, it was confirmed that the native doctor, Enuwa Odugu (48), and the victim’s father, Uwakwe Eze (67), have been arrested for conspiracy and the murder of 26-year-old Chikwado Celestine Eze.

The police report noted that the native doctor confessed to the crime, as well as performing similar rituals in the past. He claimed that the victim’s death was caused by his failure to follow specific ritualistic rules that had been prescribed to him.

Ndukwe’s statement read: “A native doctor, one Enuwa Odugu ‘m’, aged 48, and Uwakwe Eze ‘m’, aged 67, were arrested for conspiracy and the murder of Eze’s 26-year-old son, one Chikwado Celestine Eze.

“The incident is alleged to have occurred when Uwakwe Eze took his son to the native doctor’s shrine for rituals intended to fortify him with charms.

“However, during the ritual, the deceased was buried in a coffin but unfortunately died in the process. He was rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead by the attending doctor, and his body has been deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”

“The police are continuing their investigation, and the suspects will be arraigned in court once the investigation is concluded”.

Woman becomes Police officer to catch her father’s killer, arrests him 25 years later https://www.adomonline.com/woman-becomes-police-officer-to-catch-her-fathers-killer-arrests-him-25-years-later/ Thu, 17 Oct 2024 18:07:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2461459 A Brazilian woman who dedicated her life to catching her father‘s killer managed to finally bring her family peace by catching the runaway criminal to face justice 25 years after the murder.

On February 16, 1999, Givaldo José Vicente de Deus was shot and killed after a heated argument at a bar in the Brazilian city of Boa Vista.

He had gotten into an argument with one Raimundo Alves Gomes over a debt of 150 Brazilian reals (the equivalent of $29 in 1999) that Givaldo reportedly owed Gomes.

At one point, the latter walked out of the bar for a few minutes, then came back in with a gun and shot the father-of-five in the head at point-blank.

Gomes fled the scene and although an arrest warrant was issued in his name, he was never caught.

Givaldo’s grieving family never gave up hope of bringing his killer to justice, and his eldest daughter, who was only nine at the time of his death, dedicated her life to catching Gomes.

“Gomes left behind a broken family, with five children, and our mothers had to fight hard to raise us. This event could have led us down other paths, but our mothers always taught us to follow the right path,” Gislayne Silva de Deus told Brazilian news outlet Nova1.

As the eldest of five children, Gislayne had to help her mother take care of her younger siblings and also do chores around the house, but she never neglected her studies.

Her father had always encouraged her to study hard and was always ready to help her with her homework, and she didn’t want to disappoint him.

She put in the work and dreamed of one day bringing closure to her entire family by catching her father’s killer.

At age 18, after graduating high school, Gislayne was accepted into law school and became a licensed lawyer seven years later.

However, in 2022, she gave up on her law career in order to become a police officer, and two years later, on July 19, 2024, she passed the exam and was officially appointed as a State Police investigator.

She immediately requested a position in the Homicide Division, which gave her an opportunity to pursue Raimundo Alves Gomes.

In 2013, Gomes was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the killing of Givaldo José Vicente de Deus, but since he had never been apprehended after the crime, the sentence was never carried out.

His lawyers appealed the decision in 2014 and 2015, but both appeals were rejected by the High Court of Justice.

The most recent arrest warrant for Gomez was issued in 2019, so the statute of limitations runs out in 2031, meaning that the faster Gislayne could find Gomes, the more time he would have to spend behind bars.

On September 25, just two months into her career as a police officer, Gislayne Silva de Deus fulfilled her dream of bringing her father’s killer to justice, after a long 25 years.

She and her team found him hiding on a farm in the Nova Cidade region near Boa Vista and arrested him.

“When I saw him at the police station, I made a point of telling him who I was and that I had been responsible for carrying out the arrest warrant,” Silva de Deus said.

“I shared the news with my family, and everyone felt a great sense of peace and justice. We waited a long time, and even though we were in disbelief, we managed to reach this moment. I cried with relief because after so long, it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders.”

Gislayne’s story and her dedication to honouring her father and bringing her family peace touched the hearts of millions in Brazil and the whole of South America since the news was first reported last month.

Man catches wife in bed with another man, gets prison time for extortion https://www.adomonline.com/man-catches-wife-in-bed-with-another-man-gets-prison-time-for-extortion/ Wed, 16 Oct 2024 13:47:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2460990 A Chinese man was sentenced to six months behind bars after catching his wife sleeping with another man and accepting money as compensation for the cheating.

In March 2021, Lu, a 33-year-old man from Shandong, eastern China, noticed that his wife was taking unusually long to get ready to take their daughter to her private tutor, so he decided to follow her around.

When she went into a local hotel, Lu started suspecting his wife of cheating, and those suspicions were confirmed when he stormed into her room to find her in skimpy underwear next to a naked man.

In a fit of rage, Lu beat the other man, surnamed Liu, and kicked his wife, but he eventually accepted Liu’s offer of 25,000 yuan ($3,300) in three online installments as compensation for sleeping with his wife.

But during his divorce proceedings, Lu was shocked to learn that Liu had filed a complaint against him accusing him of extortion.

To this day, Lu is convinced that his former wife was the mastermind behind Liu’s complaint, as she wanted to gain an advantage in a heated custody battle over their young daughter.

In November 2021, a District Court sentenced Lu to six months behind bars for blackmailing his wife’s lover and forcing him to pay financial compensation.

The 33-year-old man appealed, but in March 2022, the Zibo Intermediate People’s Court upheld the decision of the original court.

He tried appealing the decision again, but the intermediate court once more rejected his request in December 2022.

As a last resort, Lu challenged the original verdict at the Shandong Provincial High Court which concluded that “the original verdict did not verify some facts and some evidence was conflicting,” and ordered the Zibo intermediate court to reexamine the case.

Earlier this year, the court heard the case again, and this time exonerated Lu, concluding that he had not forced Liu to pay him the 25,000 yuan, but rather negotiated with him.

Furthermore, the judge ruled that Liu’s actions breached public order, good customs and moral standards, so the husband’s actions were justified.

Last month, we wrote about a similar case where a husband used hidden cameras in his own home to catch his wife cheating with another man and was sentenced to 3 months in jail for spying on someone without their consent.

Woman marches husband to court for demanding sex 8 times every night https://www.adomonline.com/woman-marches-husband-to-court-for-demanding-sex-8-times-every-night/ Thu, 10 Oct 2024 12:05:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2458988 A Harare woman, Melocia Gwata, has sought legal protection from her husband, George Kusotera, citing his excessive demands for intimacy and abusive behaviour.

Gwata revealed her ordeal to the Harare Civil Court, describing how her husband coerced her into having intercourse up to eight times per night, resorting to violence whenever she refused.

She disclosed that her husband, Kusotera, had been making excessive demands for intimacy daily, even waking her up in the middle of the night after multiple encounters on the same day.

“He wants to have sex every day and wakes me up in the middle of the night, even after we’ve been intimate countless times on the same day,” she recounted, expressing how this has taken a toll on her physical and mental health.

Gwata further explained that when she could no longer endure his demands due to fatigue and physical pain, her husband would assault her.

She recounted how Kusotera threatened to divorce her if she continued to reject his advances, with the abuse even occurring in front of their children.

“He has been assaulting me in front of our children, shouting obscenities and telling them I don’t deserve to be called their mother,” she added.

In response to the accusations, Kusotera acknowledged his wife’s concerns, apologizing for his actions and attributing his behaviour to his love for her.

“I didn’t realize I was making her uncomfortable. I apologize and promise not to physically abuse her anymore,” he stated.

After hearing both sides, Magistrate Taruvinga granted Gwata a protection order against her husband, ensuring her safety from further abuse.

Lawyer killed in crash after depositing mother’s remains in morgue https://www.adomonline.com/lawyer-killed-in-crash-after-depositing-mothers-remains-in-morgue/ Tue, 01 Oct 2024 15:52:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2455405 A lawyer, simply identified as Okechukwu, was killed in a tragic road crash that occurred along the Awka area of the Awka-Enugu Expressway in Anambra State, Nigeria on Sunday night.

The lawyer died after his vehicle hit an abandoned articulated truck on the road and somersaulted into a nearby drainage.

A kinsman of the victim who identified him said the deceased had just deposited the remains of his late mother at the mortuary before the incident happened.

The kinsman, who pleaded anonymity, said, “The incident happened along the expressway along the Awka area. The deceased thought the truck was moving, but when he realised it wasn’t moving, it was too late as he hit it, and his car veered into the gutter.

“The lawyer had recently welcomed a newborn with his wife, whom he married in February. His sudden demise has left his loved ones in shock.

“He had just put his late mother in the mortuary and was preparing for the funeral. Now, he’s joined her in the mortuary. The incident serves as a stark reminder of life’s unpredictability and the importance of cherishing every moment.

“It was an avoidable death caused by allowing abandoned vehicles to stay on the road longer than necessary. The stationary vehicle was at a dangerous position on the road thereby posing a danger to other road users.”

It was gathered that the victim’s remains had been deposited at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka, morgue after he was confirmed dead.

Other residents have criticised traffic officials including the Federal Road Safety Corps for allegedly allowing the abandoned truck to remain on the road longer than necessary without taking action to tow it away.

But reacting to the development, the Corps Commander, FRSC, Anambra State Command, Joyce Alexander, commiserated with the family members of the victim, praying God to comfort all of them and take care of the family he left behind.

Alexander said the abandoned truck could not be towed because of the load it was carrying, adding that she had directed the FRSC personnel to cordon off the scene with reflective tape.

She said, “I am aware that he ran into a broken-down stationary truck. Unfortunately, this happened in the night and the FRSC rescue team that went for the rescue operation could not ascertain from any eyewitness what really happened.

“It was not a tyre burst, as no tyre burst was observed. The only likely explanation is excessive speed which might have led to loss of control. We arrived at this conclusion because of the skid marks and yeo marks trailing on the crash scene.

“I have also visited the scene to confirm the marks and the apparent struggle with the steering before the vehicle eventually tumbled. I would like to point out here that the FRSC is not, and cannot be at every place.

“And that’s why we solicit the collaboration and assistance of so many groups and individuals, the media inclusive. That is also why we have the FRSC toll-free emergency number: 122.

We rely on every member of society to alert us on crashes and obstructions.”

He noted that, because the truck could not be towed due to the load it was carrying, he had directed his staff to cordon off the scene with reflective tapes to warn oncoming traffic in the night, pending when the truck could be offloaded and towed in the morning.

Woman freed after hours of being strangled by a python [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/woman-freed-after-hours-of-being-strangled-by-a-python-video/ Fri, 20 Sep 2024 15:23:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2451566 A Thai woman has been rescued by police after being strangled by a python for more than two hours.

The 64-year-old woman, who gave her name as Arom, was doing the dishes at home on the outskirts of the Thai capital when she felt several bites on her leg, she said in a police video obtained by CNN that captured the attack. “The snake just shot forward and bit me,” she said.

The python then wrapped itself around her until she fell to the ground. She struggled to free herself from the snake’s tightening coils for two hours without success, according to the police.

The woman cried out for help, but no one answered initially. Eventually, one of her neighbours heard her distressed calls and sought assistance from police.

“We were shocked to see the lady was tied down on the floor with the python wrapping around (her),” Police Major Sergeant Anusorn Wongmalee of the Phra Samut Chedi Police Station in Samut Prakan, a province south of Bangkok, told CNN on Thursday. “The snake was really big.”

In footage filmed by police, Arom was seen sitting on the floor of a small room, trapped in the grip of the python, which had wrapped itself around her waist.

It took rescuers about 30 minutes to free her, after which she was sent to the hospital for treatment, according to the police.

The snake escaped afterward, police said, adding: “We couldn’t catch it.”

Thailand is home to 250 snake species, including three varieties of pythons — the reticulated, Burmese and Blood — according to Thai National Parks.

Pythons are not venomous, but they kill by suffocation, coiling themselves around their prey and squeezing tight to constrict blood flow before swallowing their victims whole.

According to Thailand’s National Health Security office, some 12,000 people were treated for venomous snake and animal bites in the country last year. Twenty-six people died from snake bites during that period, official figures show.

The attack on Arom is the second such incident in the country to attract global attention in recent weeks.

Last month, a man had his testicle bitten by a python while sitting in the bathroom.

He managed to survive the encounter by hitting the snake with a cleaning brush before calling a security guard to help remove it, according to local media.

Police minister’s purse stolen at police conference https://www.adomonline.com/police-ministers-purse-stolen-at-police-conference/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 07:39:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2448355 Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson had her purse stolen from the hotel where she gave a speech at a conference for senior police officers on Tuesday.

Thieves struck while Dame Diana was giving a speech blaming the Conservatives for an “epidemic of antisocial behaviour, theft and shoplifting,” at the annual Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA) conference at a hotel in Kenilworth.

A member of Home Office staff also had belongings taken. A 56-year-old man from Coventry has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and released on bail in connection to the incident, Warwickshire Police said.

The Home Office said no security risks had been identified.

Dame Diana used her speech to attack the Conservative Party’s legacy and outline the government’s plans to boost neighbourhood policing.

Labour’s mission “is to restore respect for the rule of law on British streets, including restoring respect for the police, which has sadly been eroded over many years,” she said.

“Too many town centres and high streets across the country have been gripped by an epidemic of anti-social behaviour, theft and shoplifting, which is corroding our communities and cannot be allowed to continue,” she added.

Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson

Dame Diana announced the government has “agreed initial funding to support the College of Policing in rolling out a specialist new training programme for neighbourhood officers”.

President of the Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA) Nick Smart told the conference police have been left at the centre of a storm not of their making due to the early release of hundreds of prisoners.

He complained that inmates are being set free without proper release plans and that the police would be left to deal with the consequences.

Warwickshire Police confirmed it was investigating reports of a burglary at the Kenilworth hotel that hosted the PSA conference.

A police spokesperson said: “The theft occurred some time between 11.00 BST-13.15 on Tuesday.

“Enquiries are ongoing. A 56-year-old man from Coventry has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.”

Woman who married herself files for divorce after one year https://www.adomonline.com/woman-who-married-herself-files-for-divorce-after-one-year/ Thu, 12 Sep 2024 19:02:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2448166 A Brazilian influencer and model, Suellen Carey, who made the headlines last year for marrying herself after struggling to find a suitable partner, has now filed for a divorce from herself.

Suellen Carey’s sologamy – which is an act of marrying oneself – was met with mixed reactions at the time.

Some considered her unconventional marriage with herself a bold and beautiful act of self-love and independence.

However, a few months down the line, Suellen seems to be unhappy with her decision.

Suellen, 36, said she put in a lot of effort for her sologamy to work out and she even went to couple’s therapy alone. However, she felt quite dissatisfied in her marriage to herself, according to reports.

She even felt lonely in her sologamy, which ultimately made her decide to quit and file for a divorce from herself.

In an interview recently, Suellen spoke about her experience of sologamy and what made her decide to call it quits.

She said that she had very high expectations from herself, which she couldn’t meet and so she felt quite exhausted in her relationship. She also shared that she felt lonely on many occasions, which made her decide that she needed a real partner in life.

“Self-analysis and reflection are necessary,” she further said.

She also shared that her sologamy and commitment to self had their own challenges.

However, Suellen seems to have taken this tough decision in her life as an important lesson as she says that one should know when to end a cycle, if it isn’t working for you. This includes even a relationship or marriage with oneself.

According to reports, before deciding to divorce herself, Suellen had attended 10 therapy sessions to understand the challenges she was facing in her sologamy. She tried to understand her feelings and work on solving her issues. But she ultimately realised that she needed to end her marriage with herself, as it would help her heal and move on in life.

Suellen views her solo marriage as an important experience which helped her heal and understand herself better. And now, she seems to be open to finding a new love in her life.

Fake CV lands top ‘engineer’ in jail for 15 years https://www.adomonline.com/fake-cv-lands-top-engineer-in-jail-for-15-years/ Fri, 06 Sep 2024 07:49:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2444976 The man who had been chief engineer at South Africa’s state-owned passenger rail company has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for faking his qualifications.

Once hailed for his successful career, Daniel Mthimkhulu was head of engineering at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) for five years – earning an annual salary of about 2.8m rand ($156,000; £119,000).

On his CV, the 49-year-old claimed to have had several mechanical engineering qualifications, including a degree from South Africa’s respected Witwatersrand University as well as a doctorate from a German university.

However, the court in Johannesburg heard that he had only completed his high-school education.

“The sentence sends a strong message that the perpetrators of white-collar crime will not go unpunished,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Mthimkhulu was arrested in July 2015 shortly after his web of lies began to unravel.

He had started working at Prasa 15 years earlier, shooting up the ranks to become chief engineer, thanks to his fake qualifications.

The court also heard how he had forged a job offer letter from a German company, which encouraged Prasa to increase his salary so the agency would not lose him.

Daniel Mthimkhulu joined Prasa in 2000, rising to become its head of engineering within a decade

He was also at the forefront of a 600m rand deal to buy dozens of new trains from Spain, but they could not be used in South Africa as they were too high.

“The court took into account the seriousness and prevalence of fraud, the significant financial loss to Prasa and Mthimkhulu’s betrayal of his employer’s trust,” Ms Mjonondwane said.

In an interview from 2019 with local broadcaster eNCA, Mthimkhulu admitted that he did not have a PhD.

“I failed to correct the perception that I have it. I just became comfortable with the title. I did not foresee any damages as a result of this,” he said.

Lt-Gen Seswantsho Godfrey Lebeya, the head of South Africa’s elite Hawks police unit that helped bring the prosecution, also welcomed the sentence.

“This should serve as a lesson to would be fraudsters that crime doesn’t pay,” he said.

The Hawks said this was a case linked to “state capture”, a term used in South Africa to describe widespread corruption that occurred under Jacob Zuma when he was president from 2009 until 2018.

Other organisations and those on social media also welcomed the news, with some noting that it highlighted that basic checks needed to be put in place when hiring people.

“Daniel Mthimkhulu’s story is proof of a failing administration system,” one X user posted.

“Not a lot of companies use qualification verification systems… We definitely have a lot more people working with fraudulent qualifications than we think.”

Mthimkhulu is reportedly planning to appeal.

Nigerian man plucks out wife’s eyes for alleged ritual https://www.adomonline.com/nigerian-man-plucks-out-wifes-eyes-for-alleged-ritual/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 16:30:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2442883

Tragedy struck at Umueze Ibeku community, a Abia State in Nigeria, early Sunday morning, when a middle-aged man identified as Lawrence Uzor, plucked out his wife’s eyes for rituals.

The victim who was said to be deep asleep when the incident occurred, is currently hospitalized at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Umuahia.

Their landlady, Madam Lovejane Nwaiwu who was said to have been alerted by the victim’s groaning, rushed into the apartment of the tenants to see what it must be.

The suspect was said to have used the killer knife on the landlady but she narrowly escaped.

Narrating her ordeals to the wife of the Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti who visited the victims Monday at the FMC, where they are currently hospitalized, the Landlady said she escaped by whiskers.

She said that she had rushed in to know why the man’s wife was groaning, the man who pinned her to the floor with a knife in his hand, attempted to cut off her head but God saved her.

The landlady said: “About 10 pm on Saturday, I heard the man shouting ‘Odogwu, Odogwu (mighty, mighty)’. I was worried as I have not heard the man and his wife, Amarachi Lawrence praying like that.

“I started praying for them. After that. I couldn’t sleep up to about 12 am and was restless. About 1 am, the wife, who is a teacher in a private school started shouting, ‘Mummy, I have been killed’.

“I opened my door, came out and peeped through their bedroom window and saw the man pressing down on the wife with a knife in his hands.

“I started pushing on people’s gates and calling out to Umueze people, but nobody came out or responded. After all attempts to call neighbours to come and nobody answered me, I went to their parlour door and started knocking on the door and suddenly, he opened the door while holding the knife and tried giving me cuts at the head.

“But I defended my head with my hand and he cut me at the hand and further slashed the knife at my face that incidentally cut me at the mouth and many of my upper teeth came out.

“I ran into my house and locked the door. while he ran outside, locked our gate and went to a neighbour’s house to tell them that he has killed his wife and his landlord’s wife.

“While inside my room, I called my mother and my daughter, who then called a church neighbour and the community vigilance team who rushed to the neighbour’s house and apprehended him”.

Meanwhile, the Governor’s wife who expressed shock over the dastardly act, vowed to seek justice for the victims.

Mrs Otti said she was deeply saddened by the case just few days after signing the compact agreement with the UNFPA on Gender-based violence.

She said that the suspect would be prosecuted for the cruelty, wondering why a man could unleash such wickedness against his wife.

“This is a terrible case of violence, attempted murder and violence”.

The Abia First Lady assured that the State Government would adequately respond to similar cases, adding that GBV will also take action.

Mrs Otti commended Umueze Ibeku community over their response and prompt action which led to the apprehension of the suspect.

She donated cash for the treatment and upkeep of the victims, assuring them of full support.

Speaking earlier, the Medical Director of FMC, Umuahia Prof. Azubuike Onyebuchi, who was represented by his Director. Medical Services, Mrs Aisha Onyemaobi, promised that the hospital would offer its best services to ensure full recovery of the victims.

In a remark, Chairman, Umueze Ibeku community cum General Manager, Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA Umuahia Zone, Tutus Ambrose Jonah, described the incident as barbaric.

“It was just like a film that faithful morning. Before that day, the victim and the husband have been living very well as husband and wife.

“It was alleged that a young man in the village took Lawrence to a prayer house, after which Lawrence came back after a visit to a local stream with cola nut, egg and other items.”

Mr Jonah who described the incident as strange, demanded justice for the victims.

Shocking: Man gets food poisoning in penis after romp with wife https://www.adomonline.com/shocking-man-gets-food-poisoning-in-penis-after-romp-with-wife/ Fri, 30 Aug 2024 14:53:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2441600 Doctors have treated the first ever case of rice-related food poisoning affecting the genital region.

A 38-year-old man sought help from urologists after suffering redness, swelling and scabbing on his penis, which had persisted for the best part of a week.

Further investigations revealed that the troubling symptoms had begun soon after he’d suffered a bout of severe diarrhea and vomiting.

The doctors, at the American University of Beirut Medical Center in Lebanon, where he was treated, took a swab of the man’s penis to test for infection.

They found evidence of the bacteria bacillus cereus, which is usually found in rice that’s been left out at room temperature for too long and can cause sickness and stomach upsets if eaten.

The doctors concluded that the man’s unusual genital infection had been caused by an episode of diarrhea and vomiting that occured almost immediately after ‘vigorous sex’ with his wife.

The intimate act can increase the risk of bacteria permeating the skin due to the change in blood vessels.

The bacteria was said to have made direct contact with the patient’s groin.

The doctors remarked that it was ‘unusual’ to see bacillus cereus in the skin, let alone the genitals.

This was the ‘first case in literature’ of the food poisoning in the penis.

The man, a father-of-two, was treated using a topical antibiotic called fucidic acid, usually used to treat eye infections.

The patient was also told wash the area ‘properly’ and avoid sex and masturbation until it healed.

One month after the infection the patient said he had no burning, or discomfort in the genital area and the infection did not come back.

The doctors explain bacillus cereus can cause you to be sick just 30 minutes after eating.

Symptoms are relatively mild and usually last about 24 hours, according to the NHS.

The patient had eaten a meal containing rice with his family just a day before his symptoms started.

The study, published in the journal Annals of Medicine and Surgery, noted that penile infections usually occur after an injury that creates an open wound, and typically involve the bacteria group A streptococcus.

Study authors wrote: ‘In this current case, it is plausible that the diarrhea and vomitus which contaminated the penis post intercourse is likely the source of the skin infection.’

Husband uses drone to catch wife cheating on him with her boss https://www.adomonline.com/husband-uses-drone-to-catch-wife-cheating-on-him-with-her-boss/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 11:07:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2440132 A Chinese man reportedly caught his wife cheating with her boss during work hours by using a drone to spy on them from afar.

The resourceful man known only as Jing began suspecting that his wife was having an affair after she became increasingly distant and changed her routine significantly, including visiting her parents more frequently than ever and coming up with excuses whenever he offered to accompany her, and spending more time at work.

Eager to get to the bottom of things but afraid of having to explain himself to his wife in case his suspicions ended up being unfounded, Jing decided to use a commercially available drone to spy on his spouse from a distance.

He would drive to her workplace and then fly the drone to survey the area without risking to be spotted by his wife or her colleagues.

One day, while monitoring his wife, he spotted her exiting her office with a mystery man and getting into a car with him.

They drove away to a remote mountainous area where the drone caught them holding hands and walking to a secluded dilapidated-looking house. About 20 minutes later, the pair left the house and drove back to their workplace.

Jing later took to social media to report that the man caught on video by his drone was actually his wife’s boss, who had recently given her a promotion.

The man’s wife also worked in the same building, so they had to keep their affair a secret, hence the visits to that remote love nest.

“Her other man is her employer,” the cheated husband wrote on Weibo. “He also works in the same factory, so it was inconvenient for them to have an affair there, so my wife was forced to meet him in the wild.”

Jing also posted photos of his wife and his lover holding hands and said that he planned to use the drone footage as evidence to secure a divorce.

Woman arrested for threatening HR manager with ‘juju’ over unpaid salary https://www.adomonline.com/woman-arrested-for-threatening-hr-manager-with-juju-over-unpaid-salary/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 14:06:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2439638 In a bizarre and unsettling incident in  Zimbabwe, a 58-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly using a live tortoise to threaten her Human Resources (HR) manager with black magic in an attempt to secure her unpaid salary.

The woman, identified as Sithembiso Budzirikawa, reportedly resorted to the unusual tactic after her repeated demands for her wages went unanswered.

According to court documents obtained by New Zimbabwe, the incident occurred on August 21, 2024, when Budzirikawa visited Chabwino Farm to acquire the tortoise before heading to her workplace.

Upon arriving at the company, Budzirikawa confronted the HR manager, demanding the immediate release of her salary.

When the manager refused to comply, Budzirikawa escalated the situation by producing the tortoise, which had been ominously covered in red floor polish and wrapped in a red cloth with needles tied around it.

She then threatened the manager with black magic if her demands were not met.

Alarmed by the threat, the HR manager reported the incident to the police. Officers responded quickly and requested a permit for the tortoise, which Budzirikawa was unable to provide.

Consequently, she was arrested under the Parks and Wildlife Act for the unlawful possession of a live tortoise.

Budzirikawa was subsequently brought before the Harare Magistrates’ Court, where she was found guilty of the charges.

The court sentenced her to pay a fine of US$300 or face 30 days in prison if she failed to pay.

Woman gets two months in jail for overfeeding pet dog to death https://www.adomonline.com/woman-gets-two-months-in-jail-for-overfeeding-pet-dog-to-death/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 09:56:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2439524 A New Zealand woman was sentenced to two months behind bars for overfeeding her pet dog Nuggi to the point where he could hardly walk 10 meters without needing a break.

When Nuggi was rescued from his Auckland owner in October of 2021, he weighed a whopping 53.7kg and his small legs struggled to support his enormous body.

SPCA officers said that he needed to pause three times to catch his breath walking just 10m from where he was kept to the rescue car.

He had so much fat under his skin that doctors could barely detect a heartbeat when they performed a checkup.

Nuggi also suffered from conjunctivitis and had wounds on his elbows and belly, most likely due to the time he spent lying on his stomach because he couldn’t move.

His owner fed him eight to ten pieces of chicken a day, plus plenty of doggy biscuits, seemingly ignorant to the fact that he was killing the poor animal.

“Nuggi was being drastically overfed and, instead of seeking help or amending the behavior, his owner continued to overfeed him until he could barely walk. This is unacceptable,” Todd Westwood, chief executive of the SPCA, told NZ Herald.

“He was so enormous that he could hardly walk and he was clearly suffering as a result of the significant amount of weight he was carrying.”

The overfed dog spent two months in the care of the SPCA, during which time he lost 8.9 kilograms, but then died suddenly due to a hemorrhage from a mass on his liver.

A necropsy revealed that he suffered from other health complications, including liver disease and Cushing’s disease.

Nuggi’s owner was sued for overfeeding the poor canine and ultimately causing his demise, and last week the Manukau District Court ordered her to pay reparations of $NZ 1222.15 ($720), disqualified her from owning dogs for a year, and sentenced her to two months in prison.

Although the SPCA most often deals with cases of severely malnourished animals, the organization pointed out that overfeeding pets can be just as detrimental, if not more so, than underfeeding them.

The organization’s officers said that Nuggis was one of the fattest dogs they had ever encountered.

Teacher appeals for help after betting GH¢15,000 reserved for father’s treatment [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/teacher-appeals-for-help-after-betting-gh%c2%a215000-reserved-for-fathers-treatment-video/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 20:41:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2439312 A Ghanaian part-time teacher who also works as a digital satellite installer, Joshua Adu Guni, has made a heartfelt plea for help to overcome his addiction to betting.

Joshua revealed that he has lost significant amounts of money through gambling, including funds intended for his father’s medical expenses.

In a video shared on Instagram by Zionfelix, Joshua recounted how his betting journey began in 2019 while he was still in school.

He explained, “I started betting in 2019, but my addiction deepened in 2020 when a friend introduced me to roulette at a casino.

He didn’t exactly teach me, but he used my phone to place bets and gave me money when he won, which piqued my interest.”

During this period, Joshua was working with his uncle in Kasoa and gradually gambled away GH¢7,000 that belonged to his uncle.

He recalled, “My uncle asked me to sell his plumbing materials, and after doing so, I had GH¢7,000. I tried to give him the money, but he wasn’t around. Three days later, I started using the money to gamble bit by bit, and before I knew it, it was all gone.”

This incident strained his relationship with his uncle, who had been sponsoring Joshua’s education at Ideal College. As a result, Joshua had to drop out of school when his uncle withdrew the financial support.

In addition to the GH¢7,000, Joshua admitted to using GH¢15,000 meant for his father’s hospital bills and another GH¢5,000 of his mother’s money to fuel his gambling habit. He also confessed to using customers’ money for betting.

Joshua described the extent of his addiction, noting that when he loses a bet, he sometimes sells his phone, only to resume betting as soon as he gets a new one.

Acknowledging the difficulty of breaking free from his addiction, he expressed his readiness to receive help. “I will be very happy if someone wants to help me. If there is a rehab, and someone wants to take me there, I am fully committed. Even if it’s right now, I am ready to stop.”

He dismissed claims that his addiction is spiritual, stating, “Someone said it is spiritual, but I don’t believe it.”

Joshua currently lives with his parents in their family home, while his younger siblings are all married with children. He advised the youth to avoid betting, warning that it is “deadly.”

Bride and her late groom.

Just days earlier, her fiancé Kirk Walker and his cousin Rob McLaurin were tragically killed by a wrong-way driver on the Henry Hudson Parkway in Harlem.

With a heavy heart, Shauntea said, ‘I should be wearing my wedding dress now, not grieving the loss of the love of my life.

“I feel like this is a TV show and I’m going to wake up any minute and go back to my real life,” she told The Post.

“Every hour since it happened, I’m having a different emotion take me over.”

The tragic car crash claimed the lives of Kirk Walker, a 38-year-old Manhattan father of three, and his cousin Rob McLaurin, 40, during Walker’s bachelor party.

At around 2:20 a.m., a pickup truck traveling in the wrong direction on the Henry Hudson Parkway collided head-on with their Dodge Challenger.

Both men tragically died in the accident, just days before Walker’s scheduled wedding.

A catering hall representative who confirmed the incident stated that the ceremony had been canceled due to “a fatal crash.”

“Our ceremony was supposed to be at 5:00 p.m. today — in a few hours,” Weaver said.

“He died 24 hours before our wedding. It’s devastating, and not just for me. He has three children who loved him immeasurably. They are heartbroken that their father’s been taken.”

He was such a generous, hard-working man,” she added. “He had a heart of gold and would do anything for anybody. Such a hard worker.”

The Kenyan couple, who first locked eyes six decades ago, beamed with joy as they exchanged vows at a charming church ceremony. Their heartwarming union was reported by local media, Citizen Digital on Monday.

“We met and fell in love in 1960, do you hear?” Mbogo was quoted as saying outside the church in Mukurweini, a town about a three-hour drive northeast of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

“We deliberated together and decided it would be great if we did a white wedding, we know in our Kikuyu custom that we are legally married, but since we are also Christians, we decided to do a church wedding.”

The groom wore a smart grey suit and silver tie for their special day, while his new bride was dressed in a white hat with a cream brocade jacket over a white outfit.

Asked about their secret, Wangui told Citizen Digital: “Women, you must respect your husbands, if you do that, then you will live as we have.

“Don’t do any wrong, and when you do, just apologise and seek forgiveness.”

The teenager has fled her home at Anfoeta-Wadamaxe in the Ho West District of the Volta Region because of a feud between the families of her mother and stepfather even though her mother still lives with her stepfather.

The first-year Junior High School (JHS) student is now living with her 80-year-old maternal grandmother in the community.

The Ho West District Director of Social Welfare, Mr Roland Kumfo told The Mirror on Monday, July 22 this year that the baby was born on April 9, this year.

He said the girl’s stepfather, a farmer, whose name was being withheld to protect the identity of the girl, had admitted impregnating his stepdaughter but refused to cater for the baby and his mother.

Mr Kumfo said the farmer had also refused an invitation from the Department of Social Welfare to discuss the matter and set up an interim arrangement to cater for the young mother and her child.

He said when contacted on the phone, the farmer said he would never come to the office of the department to answer any question.

The farmer had also refused to appear before the Paramount Chief of Anfoeta, Togbe Kwesi Drah VII and his elders who summoned him over his conduct, Mr Kumfo added.

It is an offence in all Ewe communities for a man to have carnal knowledge of any woman related to his wife by blood.

In any such case, hefty fines are imposed on the man and rites are performed to pacify the gods of the land.

Ganiyu allegedly killed Collins to create ritual soap intended for internet fraudsters, commonly known as ‘sakawa.’

The incident took place last Thursday in Oba-Oke, located within the Olorunda local government area of Osun State.

The Osun State Police Command paraded the suspect, with Police Public Relations Officer Yemisi Opalola revealing that Ganiyu was found in possession of four blood-stained knives, a chisel, two gourds, a wooden traditional pot containing black soap, two sponges with black soap, a traditional tray (Opon Ifa), and local charms.

During a press briefing on Friday, July 26, Ganiyu confessed to the gruesome act, admitting that he killed his close friend to make ritual soap.

“I visited my friend, Emmanuel Collins, because he was sick. While he was in bed, I took a knife and cut his throat. I used the part to prepare ritual money soap for Yahoo boys [known in Ghana as sakawa],” Ganiyu explained.

Ganiyu, who described himself as both a herbalist and a farmer, further confessed, “I used to make such rituals for Yahoo boys, but they usually brought the human p@rts. This time, I sourced the part myself” he stated.

After committing the gruesome murder, the suspect attended the funeral of his friend to bid him farewell.

“I regret my action because I also attended his burial, but suspicion and Police investigation led to my arrest. I can’t believe I killed my long time friend” Ganiyu cried.

Woman freed after 43 years in jail for crime she didn’t commit https://www.adomonline.com/woman-freed-after-43-years-in-jail-for-crime-she-didnt-commit/ Mon, 22 Jul 2024 09:03:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2424269 A woman who served 43 years for a murder she did not commit has been released after her conviction was overturned.

Sandra Hemme was 20 years old when she was found guilty of stabbing to death library worker Patricia Jeschke from St Joseph, Missouri, in November 1980. She was given a life sentence.

There was no evidence that linked her to the crime other than a confession she gave under heavy sedation in a psychiatric hospital, a review into her case found.

Now 64, she is believed to have served the longest known wrongful conviction of a woman in US history according to her representatives.
Innocence Project

Her legal team at the Innocence Project said they are grateful that Ms Hemme is finally reunited with her family, and they will “continue to fight” to clear her name.

While she is no longer incarcerated, her case is still being reviewed.

Circuit Court Judge Ryan Horsman’s original 118-page ruling overturning her conviction came on 14 June. It said Ms Hemme’s lawyers had clear proof of her innocence, including evidence that was not given to her defence team at the time.

“This court finds that the totality of the evidence supports a finding of actual innocence,” Judge Horsman concluded.

The review found that local police ignored evidence that directly pointed to one of their own officers – Michael Holman – who later went to prison for another crime and died in 2015.

Holman’s truck was seen in the area the day of the murder, his alibi could not be corroborated, and he used Patricia Jeschke’s credit card after claiming he found it in a ditch.

A pair of distinctive gold earrings identified by Ms Jeschke’s father were also found in Holman’s home.

None of this was disclosed to Ms Hemme’s defence team at the time, the review said.

Ms Hemme was interrogated by police several times under the influence of antipsychotic medication and a powerful sedative after being involuntarily committed to a psychiatric hospital. She had been receiving occasional psychiatric treatment since she was 12 years old.

Her responses were “monosyllabic” and she was “not totally cognisant of what was going on”, court documents showed, and at times could barely hold her head up straight and was in pain from muscle spasms – a side effect of the medications.

Judge Horsman’s review noted that no forensic evidence linked Ms Hemme to the murder. She had no motive and there were no witnesses linking her to the crime.

Sandra Hemme finally left prison on Friday, and the Kansas City Star reports that she will live with her sister.

After her release she was reunited with family in a nearby park, where she hugged her sister, daughter and granddaughter.

Her father had been hospitalised and was receiving palliative care this week. Her legal team said she was planning to visit him as soon as she can.

Defence lawyer Sean O’Brien told the Star that she will still need help because she has spent most of her life in prison and was ineligible for social security.

Meet Smita Srivastava, The “Real Rapunzel” who holds World record for longest hair https://www.adomonline.com/meet-smita-srivastava-the-real-rapunzel-who-holds-world-record-for-longest-hair/ Sun, 21 Jul 2024 07:57:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2424069 Meet Smita Srivastava, a 46-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh who holds the Guinness World Record for having the longest hair on a living person. Ms Srivastava calls herself “real Rapunzel”.

She has abstained from cutting her hair since the age of 14, and her remarkable tresses were officially measured at an impressive length of 7 feet and 9 inches last year. She is proud to have the world’s longest hair which she never cuts and takes up to 45 minutes to wash. “I love my hair so much,” she told Guinness World Records (GWR).

“I used to dream about holding a world record title and god answered my prayers. I want my hair to gain more recognition like this so I can gain more records,” Ms Srivastava added, per Mirror.

According to GWR, the 46-year-old usually washes her hair twice per week. The entire process, including washing, drying, detangling, and styling, takes up to three hours each time. She spends 45 minutes washing it, then uses three hair dryers to dry it before using her hands to detangle it, which typically takes another two hours.

Sharing why she is so passionate about her locks, Ms Srivastava explained, “My first inspiration is my mother and my sisters – because everyone in my family has beautiful hair. My other inspiration is ’80s Hindi cinema. Actresses at that time had beautiful long hair, which inspired me to grow my own hair.”

“In our society, long hair announces the beauty of women. I hope to continue growing my hair as long as I can manage it. I will never cut my hair and I will keep growing it. My family has been supportive throughout,” she added, as per the outlet.

Ms Srivastava also went on to say that she never throws out any hair that she has lost through brushing or washing. “I have not thrown out any hair in the past 20 years. I have a huge collection. One day I had major hair loss but the idea of throwing my hair away saddened me. I started crying because I had lost so much hair,” she said. The world record holder revealed that apart from staying away from scissors, she has a natural hair care regime that she follows diligently. She avoids artificial shampoos and conditioners and mixes natural herbs with ingredients like egg, onion juice and Aloe Vera.

Previously, the 46-year-old also revealed that whenever she ventures outdoors with her hair flowing freely, onlookers are left “amazed.” She noted that people find it difficult to fathom the existence of such lengthy hair, expressing disbelief at the extraordinary length she has maintained over the years.

Phiri dressed in his wife Prisca Mhuru’s clothes, including her dress, bra, and headscarf, to sneak into the house where he suspected she was with her lover.

Phiri’s plan, however, did not unfold as expected. Upon arriving at the house and knocking on the door, he was confronted by the man whom Phiri alleges is having an affair with his wife.

Recognizing Phiri despite the disguise, the lover locked the door and threatened him with an axe, forcing Phiri to flee the scene.

“My neighbour has wrecked my marriage. I learned that Mabhayo was accommodating my wife in his bedroom since he is single. I dressed myself like a woman and visited Mabhayo’s house, knowing he had a weakness for women. His dog tried to scare me, but I kept knocking until he attended to me,” Phiri recounted.

Phiri, who has two children with Prisca, believes Mabhayo’s actions have contributed significantly to the breakdown of his marriage.

Sources close to the situation suggest that Phiri has been engaged in ongoing clashes with various men in the neighbourhood, suspecting them of having affairs with his wife.

Man files for divorce because his wife cheated in a dream https://www.adomonline.com/man-files-for-divorce-because-his-wife-cheated-in-a-dream/ Fri, 12 Jul 2024 16:01:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2421470

In an unusual turn of events, a man from Bulawayo has filed for divorce after experiencing recurring dreams in which he saw his wife cheating on him.

Energy Moyo, a resident of the Lobenvale suburb, has been married to Angela Dube for nine years.

He recently submitted a divorce application to the Bulawayo Customary Court, citing vivid dreams of his wife’s alleged infidelity as the reason for their separation. Despite lacking concrete evidence, Moyo’s dreams have left him convinced of Dube’s unfaithfulness.

In his court application, Moyo described how these recurring dreams involved his wife romantically engaging with another man, who also happens to be their neighbour. These dreams have caused him significant distress and led him to question his wife’s faithfulness.

“The marriage relationship between the parties has irretrievably broken down, and there are no prospects of restoring a normal marriage between them,” Moyo wrote in his application, emphasizing that the dreams have strained their relationship beyond repair.

Moyo explained that these troubling dreams began early in their marriage and have continued throughout the years, eroding the love, affection, trust, and respect they once shared. Although he has no tangible reason to believe his wife has been unfaithful, the persistent dreams have left him unable to continue with the marriage.

Furthermore, Moyo claimed that attempts to discuss these dreams with Dube have resulted in verbal and physical abuse from her. This alleged abuse, combined with the distress caused by the dreams, prompted Moyo to seek a divorce.

In addition to the divorce, Moyo is requesting custody of their two children and an equal division of their household property.

He expressed his desire for the best outcome for his children and believes that an equal sharing of their property is fair.

The case has not yet been heard by the Bulawayo Customary Court. It remains to be seen how the court will address this unusual divorce application based on dreams.

A man tried to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into mainland China by stuffing them in his trousers, according to custom officials.

The unnamed traveller was stopped after passing through the “nothing to declare” gate at the crossing between semi-autonomous Hong Kong and the city of Shenzhen, officials said.

Upon inspection, he had 104 snakes in “six canvas drawstring bags” inside his trousers, a statement from China Customs said.

“Each bag was found to contain living snakes in all kinds of shapes, sizes and colours,” it added.

Video released by Chinese customs shows a pair of agents peering into transparent plastic bags filled with live red, pink and white snakes.

They were mostly small, but it is a large and squirmy haul of slithering reptiles for anyone to carry in their trousers.

Strict biosecurity and disease control laws forbid people from bringing in non-native species without permission into the country.

“Those who break the rules will be… held liable in accordance with the law,” the customs authority said, without specifying the man’s punishment.

In 2023 at the same crossing point, a woman was stopped trying to smuggle in five snakes hidden inside her bra.

China is one of the world’s biggest animal trafficking hubs and authorities have been cracking down on the shady trade in recent years.

Man bites snake to death for attacking him in his sleep https://www.adomonline.com/man-bites-snake-to-death-for-attacking-him-in-his-sleep/ Tue, 09 Jul 2024 08:28:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2419516 A man in India bit a snake after it attacked him, resulting in the snake’s death.

The 35-year-old railway worker, Santosh Lohar was working in a forested region near the city of Nawada in Bihar, India when the incident occurred on Tuesday evening.

When Lohar went to sleep, the reptile suddenly attacked him. He reacted by rapidly seizing the snake and biting it back twice, killing the creature.

In some parts of India, there is a superstition that biting a snake transfers the venom back to the reptile.

“In my village, there’s a belief that if a snake bites you, you must bite it back twice to neutralize the venom,” Lohar told India Today. The species of snake that bit him has not been confirmed.

After the bite, Lohar was rushed to the hospital by his colleagues.

He was kept overnight and responded well to treatment, the Times of India reported, indicating he had been given antivenom. He was discharged from the hospital the next day.

India is home to a diverse range of snake species, including several that are highly venomous. Some of the country’s most dangerous snakes include the Indian cobra (also known as the spectacled cobra), the common krait, the Russell’s viper, and the saw-scaled viper.

She takes his head in her hands showing what happened in another attack. “They had to pull the scalp back and sew it together.”

Mr Jefwa was accused of being a witch and has been attacked twice in his home, 80km (50 miles) inland from the coastal town of Malindi. The first left him without an eye. The second nearly killed him.

The couple own more than 30 acres of land where they grow maize and raise a few chickens. There has been a dispute with family members over boundaries. They believe this was the real reason Mr Jefwa was almost killed, not that people genuinely believed he was a witch.

“I was left for dead. I lost so much blood. I don’t know why they attacked me, but it can only be the land,” says Mr Jefwa.

Belief in witchcraft and superstition is common in many countries.

But in parts of Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania and South Africa, it can be used to justify killing elderly people to take their land.

A report called, The Aged, on Edge, by Kenyan human rights organisation Haki Yetu says one elderly person is murdered along the Kilifi coast every week in the name of witchcraft. Its programme officer, Julius Wanyama, says many families believe it is one of their own who orders the killing.

“They use the word witchcraft as a justification because they will get public sympathy. And people will say: ‘If he was a witch, it is good you have killed him.’”

Few people in this region have title deeds for their land. Without a will, they rely on passing it down customarily through the family. Mr Wanyama says seven out of 10 of the killings are elderly men because land ownership and inheritance lie with them.

“Historically people here in Kilifi do not have [land] documentation. The only document they have is the narrative from these elderly people. That is why mostly men are being killed, because once you kill them, then you have removed the obstacle,” says Mr Wanyama.

About an hour’s drive from the Jefwa family land is a rescue centre for the elderly run by the charity, Malindi District Association.

It is home to around 30 elderly people who have been attacked and are unable to go back to their own land.

Sixty-three-year-old Katana Chara, who looks much older than his years, has been here for around 12 months.

He had to move to the centre after he was attacked with a machete in his bedroom in April 2023. One hand was cut off at the wrist, the other just above the elbow. He can no longer work and needs help for the most basic tasks, from feeding and washing to dressing himself.

“I know the person who cut my hands, but we have never met face to face since,” he says.

Mr Chara was accused of being a witch over the death of another man’s child, but believes the real reason he was attacked was because of his six acres of land.

“I don’t have anything to do with witchcraft. I have one piece of land and it is at the seafront. It is a big piece of land.”

Many of Mr Chara’s family members were questioned over the attack but no-one was ever prosecuted. Activist Mr Wanyama has been trying to get justice for him.

“Very few people have been charged on the allegations of killings of elderly. And that’s why I think even the key people who are involved in killing, they feel they are free.”

After months of investigating, BBC Africa Eye managed to track down an ex-hitman who claims to have killed around 20 people. He says the minimum he got paid for each murder was 50,000 Kenyan shillings – around $400 (£310).

“If someone kills an old person, know that their family paid for it. It must be their family,” he tells BBC Africa Eye.

Pushed on how and why he thought it was his right to take someone’s life, he responds: “I may have done something bad because I was given the job and it is me that killed, but according to laws, according to God, the person who sent me is the guilty one.”

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights presented a document to the United Nations in February 2023 stating: “Witch burning, killings, and physical attacks are rife in regions such as Kisii in western Kenya and Kilifi county in coastal Kenya.”

It went on to say that younger family members seeking to acquire family land is a key motivating factor behind the killings. It said the attacks and killings increased during periods of drought and famine when sources of income become scarce.

Mr Wanyama says killings which use accusations of witchcraft to justify land grabs have become a “national disaster”

“It started as a regional issue, but now it has escalated… If we don’t address it, then we are losing our archives of the elderly. Those are the only live archives we can believe.”

In traditional African culture, the elderly are revered for their wisdom and knowledge.

In Kilifi, it is the reverse. Old people are so fearful of becoming a target, many dye their hair in an attempt to look younger.

It is rare for someone in this region to survive after being accused of witchcraft.

While Mr Chara is safe now he lives at the rescue centre for the elderly, for men like Mr Jefwa there is real fear that whoever tried to murder him will come back.
