The Ghana Police Service says it has restored calm in Ejura following a mob attack on the Ejura Police Station in the early hours of Saturday, January 11, 2025.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the police explained that the incident arose after the arrest of a suspect around 10:00 p.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025, for an alleged case of stealing. The suspect was detained in police custody pending further investigations.
The statement added that at approximately 2:20 a.m., the suspect complained of illness and was promptly taken to the Ejura Government Hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, the suspect passed away while receiving treatment later that morning.
“As arrangements were being made to transfer the body to the morgue for preservation and autopsy, some members of the Ejura community attacked the police station, setting it ablaze. A section of the mob then proceeded to the hospital and forcibly took possession of the body,” the police reported.
According to the statement, the police engaged opinion leaders and carried out de-escalation efforts, which successfully restored calm, with no casualties reported. The military later joined to support efforts in maintaining law and order.
The Ghana National Fire Service was also present to extinguish the fire at the police station.
