Ghana Premier League champions FC Samartex has received financial support from the Speaker of Parliament in preparation for their debut in the CAF Champions League.
The Timber Giants earned their place in Africa’s premier club competition after winning the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League.
Last week, a delegation from FC Samartex met with Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, to seek support for their continental campaign. In response, Bagbin committed to providing financial aid of up to 200,000 Ghana cedis.
“As one of the three branches of government, I pledge our support to you on behalf of the Parliament of Ghana,” Bagbin stated.
“Previously, we donated 100,000 Ghana cedis to Medeama SC. Considering current interest rates and the cedi’s depreciation, an additional 100,000 might be less impactful. Therefore, we will adjust the amount according to the exchange rate and other factors, and we aim to provide up to 200,000 cedis,” he added.
FC Samartex will face Cameroonian side Victoria United FC in their CAF Champions League fixture.
The first leg will be held in Cameroon from August 16 to 18, 2024, at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, while the second leg is scheduled for August 23 to 25, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
