Owner of FC Samartex, Dr Richard Nsenkyire, has appealed to President Akufo-Addo for financial backing as the team prepares for their CAF Champions League campaign.
The Timber Giants secured their spot in the 2024/25 CAF Champions League by clinching the Ghana Premier League title last season.
During a visit to the Jubilee House on Wednesday, Dr Nsenkyire highlighted the financial challenges that African teams often face in continental competitions.
“We want to seek your blessing by showing you the cup. Over the years, what we have realised is the teams that go to Africa lack financial support,” he said.
“They would have really done well or gone to the advanced stages but unfortunately, finances have become a problem and we are appealing to you that we are representing Ghana and we need your support Mr. President to make sure that we can excel in the CAF Championship, that is why we are here,” he added.
FC Samartex aims to advance to the group stage of the tournament and potentially progress further into the knockout rounds, following the example set by Medeama last season.
The team is currently in pre-season training in the Eastern Region and will face Cameroon’s Victoria United in the preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
The first leg is set for August 16 at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, with the second leg scheduled for August 23 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
