George Alhassan, a former member of Ghana’s 1982 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad, has laid the blame for the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament squarely at the feet of head coach Otto Addo.
This marks a historic disappointment for Ghana, as it is the first time in 20 years that the Black Stars will miss out on the tournament.
The team finished at the bottom of Group F, securing only three points and failing to win a single match in six attempts.
Alhassan has expressed confidence in the players’ commitment, asserting that the failure lies primarily with the technical team. In an interview with Citi Sports, he said, “They [players] are committed.
In our case, I don’t think we have a good coach, because if you have a good coach, things like this wouldn’t happen. So, in this particular issue, it’s the coaching staff.”
He further emphasized, “No player will wear a jersey and want to go and disgrace himself. For me, I believe it’s the coaches.”
Despite the mounting criticism, there have been no definitive actions taken by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) regarding Addo’s future.
Sources close to JoySports indicate that Otto Addo could continue in his position as head coach following an Executive Council meeting on November 27, 2024, even after the Black Stars’ unexpected failure to qualify.
