Former Central Regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs, has attributed the high level of perceived corruption in the Ghana Police service to the working conditions of the personnel.
According to Mr Allotey Jacobs, the service does not provide conducive working conditions for its personnel, forcing them to engage in corrupt acts which eventually tarnish the image of the service.

Mr Allottey made the point when speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem show on Tuesday.
“The conditions of service provided to personnel in the Ghana Police Service are not favourable enough to support them. We are not promoting the welfare of our police so even if you give a policeman one cedi, he will accept,” he noted.
He wondered why the kind of working conditions given to the military cannot be replicated in the police service.

“What has been done to improve the lives of police who protect law and order? The military protects our sovereignty and is given better conditions so why can’t replicate their conditions for the police service,” he asked.
The Ghana Police Service has often ranked top of corruption perception lists in the country.
