Black Stars were lucky to qualify for 2022 World Cup – Otto Addo

Otto Addo has expressed concern over the prolonged decline of the Black Stars, stating that the team was fortunate to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Ghana secured their place in the tournament by narrowly defeating Nigeria on away goals in a tense two-legged playoff.

This qualification followed a disappointing performance at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, where the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage.

Since then, the team’s struggles have continued, culminating in another early exit from the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Currently, Ghana is on the verge of missing out on the 2025 AFCON tournament due to a poor start in the qualifiers.

Ghana is yet to secure a win after four matches and sits third in Group F with just two points. Addo, who is in his second term as head coach, has noted a significant difference compared to his first stint, which ended with World Cup qualification.

He reflected on the ongoing challenges, saying, “Since not qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, we’ve been struggling as a country for a long time; we were lucky to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup.”

Ghana’s chances of qualification now depends on their upcoming matches against Angola and Niger in November, where they must achieve victories while also hoping for Sudan to falter against the same teams.

The last time Ghana missed an AFCON tournament was in 2004.
