Black Stars players commitment questioned by 1982 AFCON winner

Legendary Karim Abdul Razak has raised concerns about the commitment level of the Black Stars following their recent underwhelming performances.

Ghana began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers with a disappointing 1-0 loss to Angola. In their second group match, Otto Addo’s side managed only a 1-1 draw against Niger.

These results leave Ghana in 3rd place in their group, with just one point from two games.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM‘s Sports Nite, the 1982 AFCON winner reflected on the team’s lack of unity, comparing it to his playing days.

“When we were in camp, we used to play friendlies against local clubs like Kotoko, Olympics, and Hearts of Oak. Nowadays, they don’t even seem interested in playing these local sides,” he remarked.

“It was easier for us to play together back then. We weren’t playing for ourselves; we were playing for the team and for the country. There wasn’t even talk of bonuses. You just went out, played to win, and that’s what mattered. Things are different now. You need to understand the environment and know your players well,” he added.

The Black Stars will aim to improve their performance when they face Sudan in a crucial doubleheader in October for matchday three and four of the AFCON qualifiers.
