Black Stars: Otto Addo is doing a good job – GFA ExCO member

-

Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Samuel Aboabire has expressed confidence in Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, despite recent criticism.

The 47-year-old who was reappointed in March 2024 with a three-year contract, which includes the option for an additional two years has faced significant scrutiny from fans after the team failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The Black Stars ended the qualification campaign in last place in Group F, accumulating only three points from six matches. The group, which included Angola, Sudan, and Niger, saw the team suffer three losses and three draws.

As a result, Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, will miss the tournament for the first time in 20 years, with the event set to take place in Morocco next year.

Despite the team’s disappointing performance, Aboabire defended Addo’s work, acknowledging the coach’s efforts.

In an interview with Onua TV, he stated, “Otto Addo is doing well as the Black Stars coach just that goal-scoring has been the team’s problem.”

Following the failure to qualify for AFCON, the GFA Executive Council held an extensive meeting with Addo to review his technical reports.

While a final decision on his future is yet to be made, consultations with stakeholders are ongoing. However, local media reports indicate that Addo is likely to remain in his role.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are aiming to bounce back with improved performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where they will face Chad and Madagascar in March.
