Black Stars must stay focused despite revival – Maxwell Konadu

Former Black Stars assistant coach Maxwell Konadu believes the senior national team has rediscovered its rhythm following a series of strong performances in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. However, he has cautioned the team to maintain focus as the qualifiers progress.

After a disappointing 2024 campaign, which saw the team go six matches without a win, the Black Stars bounced back with impressive victories over Chad and Madagascar on Matchdays 5 and 6 of the qualifying campaign.

Ghana thrashed Chad 5-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium before cruising to a 3-0 win over Madagascar in Morocco. These back-to-back victories have boosted Ghana’s chances of securing a spot at the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

“I feel we are back on track. Some may argue that the countries we defeated are not top-tier teams, but football has evolved to the point where you cannot underestimate anyone. If they can play this same way against teams like Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Mali, and others, we will be very competitive,” Konadu told Akoma FM.

He emphasized the importance of focus and consistency as the qualifiers progress.

“Almost doesn’t count in my opinion. You just have to make sure you’re there, so all we have to do is focus on the immediate match, get that out of the way, and then we can see our way forward. We shouldn’t believe that just because we’re home and dry, we should be complacent.”

Konadu also urged the players to remain committed and continue their push for World Cup qualification.

“I think the boys are professionally good and top players, so I don’t think they will lose focus. They will continue to do their best to get Ghana to the World Cup,” he added.

Ghana currently leads Group I with 15 points and will return to action in September with qualifiers against Chad and Mali on Matchdays 7 and 8. They will wrap up their group campaign with clashes against Comoros and the Central African Republic.
