Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei is optimistic about Ghana’s chances of securing a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following their shocking failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in two decades, the senior national team has now shifted its focus to the World Cup qualifiers, set to resume in March.
Ghana had a shaky start under former coach Chris Hughton, but the team’s fortunes turned around after Otto Addo’s reappointment in March last year.
The Black Stars secured crucial back-to-back victories against Mali and the Central African Republic, reviving hopes of making it to the global tournament.
With upcoming matches against Chad and Madagascar, Ofei—who recently joined the technical team—believes the squad is well-positioned to book a ticket to the World Cup, which will be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
“We have a lot of work to do, but I think we’re in a good position to qualify for the World Cup. Everyone is hungry and determined,” Ofei told Citi Sports.
“We have a new head of video analysis and a sports mental coach, and I feel like the entire team is motivated to ensure we secure qualification,” he added.
After four matches, Ghana sits second in Group I with nine points, keeping their World Cup dream alive.
