Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has bolstered the case for including locally-based players in the national team after his standout performances in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The 32-year-old shot-stopper made his debut in style, keeping clean sheets in Ghana’s victories over Chad and Madagascar.
Asare was in goal when the Black Stars secured a commanding 5-0 win against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium before replicating his fine form in a 3-0 triumph over Madagascar.
Speaking to 3Sports, the former Great Olympics goalkeeper stressed that locally-based players deserve national team opportunities if they prove their worth.
“I appreciate the confidence and support from everyone. I’m happy that I met expectations. If a local player is performing well, he deserves a chance,” Asare stated.
“Sometimes, people assume that playing for the national team is difficult for local players, but we are determined,” he added.
Following his outstanding performances, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Asare will retain his position as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper.
He is now set to be in goal again when Ghana faces Chad and Mali in the next round of qualifiers in September.
