The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed his strong commitment to transforming Ghana into a digital hub of Africa by training one million Ghanaians in IT skills.

He first announced this initiative in February during a major policy address to the nation.

Speaking at the launch of the NPP’s 2024 Manifesto in Takoradi, Dr Bawumia reiterated the policy, emphasizing its inclusion in the Manifesto.

He highlighted that as President, his broader vision is to establish a digital Ghana that enhances various sectors and provides employment opportunities for the youth.

“I am dedicated to building a Ghana where we harness technology, data, and systems for inclusive economic growth. I aim to develop the digital talent needed for the Fourth Industrial Revolution by providing digital and software skills to hundreds of thousands of youth, including school dropouts. Through collaboration with the private sector, we plan to train at least 1,000,000 youth in IT skills, including software developers, to create job opportunities globally,” Dr Bawumia stated.

He also expressed his ambition to utilize digital technology, STEM, robotics, and artificial intelligence to revolutionize agriculture, healthcare, education, manufacturing, fintech, and public service delivery.

As part of his Digital Ghana agenda, Dr Bawumia outlined a goal to bridge the digital divide and achieve nearly 100% internet penetration.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the significant progress achieved in increasing internet penetration from 34% in 2016 to approximately 70% in 2023 and expressed confidence in reaching over 90% in the next four years.

Additionally, under his presidency, he pledged to enhance the focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Online College Training (OCT), and STEM.

To prepare children for the future workplace, Dr. Bawumia’s government plans to prioritize STEM, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and vocational skills in the education system.

They aim to standardize coding and robotics education in senior high schools. Moreover, his government intends to facilitate the establishment of a National Open University Ghana in collaboration with the private sector, with a focus on ICT, TVET, and STEM.
