Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reminded the opposition NDC that parliamentary majority is achieved through wins at the polling station level within constituencies, not “manufactured” in Parliament.
This follows Thursday’s dramatic events in Parliament, where the Speaker declared four seats held by MPs contesting the 2024 elections on different tickets as vacant.
This reduced the NPP’s seat count and briefly granted the NDC a majority status. However, within 24 hours, the Supreme Court granted a stay of execution, nullifying the Speaker’s ruling until the substantive case seeking an interpretation of the relevant constitutional article is heard.
Addressing this development, Dr. Bawumia taunted the NDC for holding a “majority for only 24 hours,” emphasizing that parliamentary majorities “cannot be manufactured” within the chambers of Parliament.
“A few days ago, they (NDC) did something in Parliament and claimed to be the majority side,” Dr. Bawumia said at a large campaign rally in Nkawkaw on Saturday.
“But their majority lasted just 24 hours. It was the shortest-living majority in history,” he added.
Dr. Bawumia went on to assert that parliamentary majorities are won at the polling stations, and the NPP is poised to secure a “decisive parliamentary majority” in the December elections.
“They need to understand that if they want a majority, they should come to the polling station, come to the constituency, win an election, and then go to Parliament. You don’t sit in Parliament and manufacture a majority for yourself,” he said.
“We will meet them in the constituencies, we will meet them at the polling stations. What I can assure you is that from what I’ve seen—having been to over 200 constituencies, campaigned on the ground, and analyzed the data—I can tell you, if we held elections today, the NPP would have a decisive majority in Parliament.”
Dr. Bawumia also encouraged NPP members to remain united and continue pushing for victory in December.
“The election is not today. It’s on December 7. But if we continue as we are, and we all come together, by midnight on December 7, you’ll hear that the NPP has won a decisive majority in Parliament. We will win at the polling stations,” he stressed.
