Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has commissioned 100 new electric buses with the aim of improving transportation and reducing transport fares.
The buses begin operations today, November 28, 2024, and will transport commuters to various destinations within Accra and other cities across the country.
This initiative is the first of Dr. Bawumia’s pledges to reduce carbon emissions and the high dependency on oil and gas for fuel.
Speaking at a brief ceremony on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia said that transport fares always increase when fuel prices rise, and the time has come for Ghanaians to move freely without worrying about the increment of transport fares.
He continued that the new buses represent his commitment to using innovative means to tackle the major issues affecting the Ghanaian people.
Dr. Bawumia said that when he first suggested the idea of moving public transport in Ghana to electric vehicles, many thought it was not possible.
“I’m so elated to stand before you to commission the first batch of electric buses for Metro Mass Transit Limited to augment its fleet, promote its operations, and usher in a new era of innovation in the delivery of public transport services,” he said.
“As the Minister said, the move towards electric vehicles is not only aimed at the MMT but the whole public transport sector,” he added.
