Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has admitted that arrogance among some government appointees and several unpopular government decisions contributed significantly to the party’s crushing defeat in the 2024 polls.
Dr. Bawumia, who is currently on a nationwide Thank You Tour to express gratitude to party supporters, made the remarks during an address at the Takoradi Technical University (TTU) Auditorium.
He acknowledged that some government officials became “excessively arrogant,” often refusing to heed advice from both ordinary Ghanaians and party loyalists, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among voters and even within the NPP’s own ranks.
Dr. Bawumia further cited controversial policies such as the introduction of the E-levy, the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), and the general high cost of living at the time as major issues that alienated voters.
He stressed that, as a senior figure in the government and the party’s 2024 flagbearer, he does not absolve himself of responsibility for these failures.
He emphasized the urgent need for the party to confront these challenges head-on as part of its restructuring efforts.
Dr. Bawumia also urged the NPP to fully implement the recommendations of the Oquaye Committee Report, insisting that doing so would promote unity and strengthen the party ahead of future contests.
