Banning galamsey without alternative livelihood useless, waste of money – Taskforce Commander

-

Former Anti-Galamsey Taskforce Commander, Mohammed Bogobiri has hinted that there is no way Ghana can succeed it the fight against galamsey if government fails to provide any source of living for those engaging in such illegal mining activities.

He described it as useless and waste of money if government bans galamsey and does not provide alternative livelihood for those involved.

There has been calls to ban small scale mining due to the devastating effects of illegal mining known in local parlance as galamsey.

Several attempts have been made by government to stop it but yielded no result. Critics believe a ban help protect the water bodies and forest reserves.

But former Anti-Galamsey Taskforce Commander, Mohammed Bogobiri in an interview with Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom on Burning Issues on Adom FM revealed that, those doing the illegal mining are earning income from it and stopping it will be difficult.

“Even though I do not support galamsey but that is where the people are getting their income and without any source of income for them, the military can go and drive them from sites during the day, but they will be there in the night to continue their mining”.

Mohammed Bogobiri added that, illegal mining has been in existence for long and successive government have made effort to end it but have failed to stop because that is where people are getting their income hence the reason it has become difficult for authorities to stop it.
