Ban Independence Day parade – Casely Hayford

-

Social commentator, Sidney Casely Hayford, is questioning the relevance of Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations which costs the nation thousands, if not millions, of cedis each year.
According to him, exposing school children to the scorching sun for hours, all in the name of Independence Day, is not worth celebrating.

Ghana marked its 61st Independence Anniversary Tuesday with a colourful celebration at the Black Star Square in Accra.
As a tradition, there was a parade with school children and security personnel where most of them reportedly fainted after waiting for hours in the sun.
Though the time duration for the parade has been reduced, most of the participants could not stand on their feet.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show programme on Wednesday, Casely Hayford said the parade was a complete waste of human energy, time and money.
He indicated that, the celebration of Ghana’s Independence Day would be meaningful and justifiable if it’s linked with Panafest.
“Panafest should be added to the independence day celebrations so that we invite our neighbours to see our rich culture”, the social commentator stressed.

Mr. Casely Hayford believes decision makers have failed to think outside the box and that is why the same old things are being practiced after six decades.
