Newly-elected Secretary-General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Shirley Ayokor Botchwey returned to Ghana on Monday, October 28, following a successful summit in Samoa.
She was accompanied by President Nana Akufo-Addo and other government officials.
Upon her arrival at the Kotoka International Airport(KIA), the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration was welcomed by scores of Ghanaians.
The jubilant citizens were clad in white apparel while others wore outfits made with the Ghana colour to show how proud they were of Madam Botchwey.
Her election, which took place during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa.
Her victory marks a historic milestone as she becomes the first Ghanaian and the second African to hold the distinguished position.
The first African to hold the position was Chief Emeka Anyaoku of Nigeria from 1990 to 2000.
The 61-year-old will succeed Baroness Patricia Scotland effective April 1, 2025.
Ms Scotland, a British-Dominican, was first elected in 2016, and is completing her two-term tenure.
Scores of Ghanaian and world leaders have taken to social media to extend congratulatory messages and wish Madam Botchwey well on her new endeavour.
