Audio: PDS asked to halt mass disconnection over Manya Krobo riots

Power Distribution Services (PDS) has been directed to hold on with the mass disconnection exercise in the Lower Manya Krobo of the Eastern region.

Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Samuel Nuertey Aryeetey, who disclosed this on Adom FMs morning show ‘Dwaso Nsem‘ Friday said the direction had become necessary to ensure calm between PDS and the residents.

“We had a stakeholders meeting yesterday with the press, district assembly, security agencies and the PDS and we concluded that PDS should hold on with the mass disconnection exercise for now while we have a dialogue between PDS and the residents to ensure calm which the PDS agreed,” he noted following a clash between residents and police officers.

The Police have arrested 35 people following four days of unrest in the Municipality over the disconnection exercise by PDS.

Currently, 100 police personnel drawn from the National Formed Police Unit in Accra, Rapid Deployment Force and the Counter Terrorism Unit, together with men from the Eastern Regional Command, are carrying out patrols in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality using anti-riot equipment.

One person has been confirmed dead after residents attacked a police team providing protection to the Municipal Assembly Office on Wednesday afternoon.

Mr Aryeetey said some meters were given by the assembly through a project in 2015/2016 and it has been discovered those were the ones having the over-billing issues.

He asked residents who have been over-billed to submit the bills to PDS for rectification. He appealed to the people to be calm as the government takes measures to solve the problem.
