Audio: Gov’t to sponsor children of farmers and fishermen at the university

The government has announced a package of 24 scholarships for the children of farmers and fishermen to pursue higher education.

This was announced by President Nana Akufo-Addo during a speech on Friday, 7 December 2018, to mark the 34th National Farmers’ Day celebration held at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium at Tamale in the Northern Region.

Mr Akufo-Addo said: “This year, government has added to the national awards package for farmers and fisherfolk, a total of 24 scholarships for the wards of farmers and fisherfolks”.

He pointed out that the scholarships are for local tertiary programmes ranging from first degree to PhD in any agricultural subject of their choice.

For Mr Akufo-Addo, the new package for the farmers is a “testimony of [how government is] making agriculture attractive to all especially the youth”.

National Farmers’ Day is commemorated each year to honour Ghanaian farmers and fishermen. The occasion is also used to acknowledge the vital position farmers and fishermen occupy in the nation’s socio-economic development.

The day is usually marked as a public holiday.
