Aggrieved youth of Akyem Asuom in the Kwaebibirem Municipality of the Eastern Region have stormed about 10 illegal mining sites popularly known as galamsey to express their frustration and opposition to the destruction of their cocoa farms and water bodies.
According to the youth, several warnings to the illegal miners to halt their activities have fallen on deaf ears.
In an interview with Adom News, they lamented the destruction caused to their farmlands, crops, and water bodies.
The youth alleged that there are some miners destroying their farmlands and water bodies who are holding only prospecting licenses, which don’t permit them to mine.
They have therefore, called on the government to, as a matter of urgency halt the Chinese fronting the illegality in the area.
Meanwhile, the Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, has backed the youth call to halt the galamsey activities in their community because he confirmed it has indeed caused huge destruction to their water bodies and farmlands.
Nana Boadi added that he has single-handedly tried all possible means to stop the galamsey activities in the community when he was installed as the Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, but all efforts have failed.
