The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has formally petitioned President John Mahama, calling for the removal of Auditor General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu from office.
ASEPA is urging the President to initiate the constitutional process outlined under Article 187(13) of the 1992 Constitution to remove Mr. Asiedu from his position.
In a post shared on Facebook, ASEPA’s Executive Director, Mensah Thompson, confirmed that the petition was submitted to the Jubilee House on Thursday.
The petition accuses Mr. Akuamoah of high crimes, misconduct, abuse of office, and breaching the constitution, with supporting evidence attached to substantiate these claims.
“We have presented evidence that clearly points to these grave accusations against the Auditor General,” Thompson stated.
He emphasized the seriousness of the allegations, noting that the petition marks the beginning of a constitutional process similar to the removal of the Chief Justice under Article 146.
In June 2024, former President Nana Akufo-Addo extended Mr. Akuamoah’s contract, despite his statutory retirement being due on August 1, 2024.
Mr. Akuamoah was first appointed to the role in September 2021, following the controversial retirement of his predecessor, Daniel Yaw Domelevo.
