Asante Kotoko secured the first-ever Democracy Cup with a 2-1 victory over Hearts of Oak on Wednesday night at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Assistant coach David Ocloo fielded an exciting starting lineup featuring several newly signed players.
Asante Kotoko started the match strong, creating multiple scoring opportunities. In the 30th minute, they were awarded a penalty.
Veteran midfielder, Justice Blay confidently scored from the spot, giving the Porcupine Warriors a 1-0 lead.
Hearts of Oak equalized just five minutes into the second half.
New signing Asamoah Boateng Afriyie scored with a header, but the goal was controversial and left Asante Kotoko’s goalkeeper Frederick Asare requiring medical attention.
The game remained fiercely competitive, but Asante Kotoko emerged victorious thanks to a fantastic goal by Peter Amidu.
This secured the team the title of Champions of the inaugural Democracy Cup.
Earlier in the day, Members of Parliament defeated a team of former Black Stars players 3-1.
Following their victory over Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko will face DC United in the United States on a date yet to be confirmed.
These events are part of the country’s celebration of 30 years of Parliamentary Democracy under the Fourth Republic.
