Former Ghanaian football star, Laryea Kingston, has disclosed lingering discontent within Asamoah Gyan regarding the loss of his captaincy of the Black Stars to Andre Ayew.
Before the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Egypt, the then head coach, Kwesi Appiah, appointed Andre Ayew as the new captain, while Gyan was reassigned as the General Captain of the team.
Gyan subsequently announced his premature retirement, but after a presidential intervention, the former Sunderland and Liberty Professionals striker reversed his decision.
Kingston revealed that, Gyan felt unsettled by Ayew’s elevation to the captaincy, perceiving it as a forceful acquisition of the role.
“Look at someone like Asamoah Gyan, Dede Ayew got the captaincy by force so if you are speaking to Asamoah now, he is not happy,” he remarked.
Laryea Kingston revealed that, he decided not to support the Black Stars due to how the management treated him.
“For many years, I never supported the Black Stars due to what they did to me. However, recently, I decided to let go of past grievances and focus on moving forward,” he added.
Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s highest-scoring footballer of all time, announced his retirement from professional football in June 2023.
