President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has said that the Appointments Committee would have been boring if Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin was not part of it.
He made this known in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem amidst accusations that Mr. Afenyo-Markin asked necessary questions during the vetting process.
Some people have even accused the Minority Leader of settling personal scores with some nominees who appeared before the committee.
But Mr. Cudjoe has stated that the Majority side hardly asked any serious questions, hence it is the responsibility of the Minority to “grill” the nominees.
“Everything happening at the vetting is allowed because that’s what vetting is supposed to be. I’m not saying Afenyo should be celebrated, but it would be boring if Afenyo wasn’t there. Half of the committee members shouldn’t even be there asking questions. If you don’t have any questions, just find somewhere to sit,” he said.
He also expressed surprise that the Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor doesn’t even ask questions but proceeds to recognize people.
He added, “People don’t even understand what vetting is. It’s not about saying you know someone and this familiarity thing.”
Mr. Cudjoe continued by pointing out that if the other members of the committee didn’t ask great questions, then Mr. Afenyo-Markin wouldn’t be accused of asking tough questions.
According to Mr. Cudjoe, most of the questions the lawmaker asked were legitimate, as they were crucial in the vetting process, and they were fair.
“It’s the moment to put everything aside because you are representing your country and your region. Afenyo-Markin’s questions really matter in vetting,” he added.
