The Anti-Cocoa Smuggling Taskforce of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has impounded two trucks loaded with 400 bags of cocoa at Kwahu Nketepa in the Eastern region.
This was in a joint operation with the Nketepa Community Watchdog Committee on Saturday.
The smuggled cocoa beans were being transported to Togo.
The commander of the Watchdog Committee, Anthony Ablor said they had a tip-off about a week ago and managed to intercept the two trucks around 1 am.
Though the drivers together with their mates took to their heels, the police arrested them and are currently in custody, assisting with investigations.
Speaking to Adom News, the Assembly member for Nketepa Electoral Area, Bosu Yaw said the area has been a place for smugglers and they have heightened surveillance to clamp down on the illegality.
Mr Bosu used the opportunity to appeal to the government for logistics, particularly motorbikes to enhance their work.
Meanwhile, COCOBOD has promised to reward anyone who will help give information to arrest cocoa smugglers.
