The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has unveiled plans to distribute 2,000 new streetlights across the metropolitan area by August 25.
This is to address concerns about malfunctioning streetlights that pose a safety risk.
This announcement was made during the Public Financial Management Town Hall Meeting held in Accra on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, which aimed to provide an update on government projects executed by the Assembly since 2017.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, the Mayor of AMA, Elizabeth Naa Kwatsoe Tawiah Sackey, acknowledged the issue of non-functional streetlights but reassured residents that the new installations would enhance nighttime safety.
“It’s not that we haven’t distributed streetlights. We have. Unfortunately, some are no longer working. However, I want to assure you that we plan to distribute about 2,000 new streetlights by the end of this week,” she told Channel One News.
The AMA Mayor emphasized the AMA’s commitment to efficiently using public funds to improve residents’ quality of life, highlighting various projects implemented since 2017.
These projects include the construction of a three-story, 18-unit classroom block for the Independence Avenue Cluster of Schools, a two-unit kindergarten block for Bubiashie 1 Basic School, and a childcare centre at Old Fadama.
Additionally, she mentioned the distribution of 2,850 dual desks to public basic schools in the metropolis and Accra’s designation as the 2023 World Book Capital to promote reading.
The event, which brought together regional executives, local government officials, and community leaders, was held to account for the government projects managed by the Assembly.
Madam Sackey further urged residents to continue supporting the government, reaffirming the Assembly’s dedication to improving living conditions in the metropolis.
