A Tarkwa District Magistrate Court has remanded a 24-year-old galamsey operator, Vitus Nsore, into police custody for allegedly raping a 56-year-old woman at Amoanda in the Western Region.

The accused is to reappear before the court on March 21, 2025. His plea has not been taken as police investigations continue.

Presenting the case, Police Sergeant Douglas Addae told the court, presided over by Mr Charles Owusu Nsiah, that the complainant, a farmer, lived in Amoanda with her family and the accused.

According to the prosecution, on February 9, around 1:00 am, a heavy downpour caused a power outage in the community. Nsore allegedly took advantage of the darkness, sneaked into the victim’s room, and violently attacked her.

He reportedly subjected the victim to beatings, covered her mouth, and forcibly had unprotected sex with her. After the act, he allegedly locked her in the room and threatened to return with a knife to kill her.

Despite being weak, the victim managed to escape through a window and raised an alarm. Her children and a resident, Anthony Kwofie, searched for the accused but could not find him immediately.

Nsore was later arrested by the victim’s children with the help of concerned residents and handed over to the Huni-Valley Police. The case was then referred to the Western Central Regional Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) for further investigation.

The victim was issued a medical report form and sought treatment at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital, where the form was later returned to the police, duly endorsed by a medical officer.
