All police officers must wear body cameras on official duties – Muntaka Mubarak

The Minister-Designate for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has called for the mandatory use of body cameras by police officers as a measure to address growing concerns over police misconduct, including extortion and brutality.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 24, the Asawase lawmaker stressed that implementing this policy would enhance accountability and help rebuild public trust in the Ghana Police Service.

Mr. Muntaka acknowledged the widespread public outcry over incidents of police misconduct, which he noted have significantly eroded confidence in the country’s law enforcement agencies.

To address the issue, he proposed a policy requiring all police officers to wear and activate body cameras while performing their official duties.

Explaining his proposal, Muntaka Mubarak said body cameras would provide unbiased and transparent records of police interactions with the public, eliminating ambiguities in cases of alleged misconduct.

“We will ensure that if you are a police officer and have to step out, you have your body camera on. This will take away all ambiguity because everything you do will be recorded. When officers engage in extortion or brutality, the evidence will be there to hold them accountable,” he stated.

The proposal, if implemented, is expected to deter misconduct and improve the professionalism of the Ghana Police Service.
