The Chief of Akyem Ntronang, Nana Asiedu Akora II, has vehemently denied allegations that he is involved in illegal mining activities in the Birim North Municipality of the Eastern Region.

In an interview with Adom News, Nana Asiedu Akora II clarified that the mining activities taking place in his area are alluvial mining, a legally sanctioned practice. He dismissed claims that he had accepted bribes from miners.

The chief acknowledged that his unit committee members had allocated land for mining without his consent, describing their actions as improper.

However, after inspecting the site and engaging with the miner, Nana Asiedu Akora II stated that he could not halt the operations, as they were legally authorized.

He emphasized that the miner must take necessary measures to mitigate environmental risks, including dredging to prevent flooding, constructing a football park, and providing adequate boreholes for the community.

Additionally, he urged all miners to operate within legal frameworks and to ensure that excavated pits are properly covered after mining.

Kwabena Nyarko, a member of the unit committee, defended the chief, stating that Nana Asiedu Akora II had no involvement in the illegal mining activities.

He also confirmed that the land was allocated in the chief’s absence.
